Banjo: Recompiled is a fan-made native PC port of the original Nintendo 64 Banjo-Kazooie. Its project documentation lists Windows, Linux, and Mac support, high-frame-rate rendering, ultrawide aspect ratios, configurable controls, and community mods. It does not include the game: you need your own copy of the North American Nintendo 64 1.0 version.

What is Banjo: Recompiled?

Banjo: Recompiled uses N64: Recompiled to statically recompile the original game into a native port, with RT64 as its rendering engine. The project describes static recompilation as automatically translating an application from one platform to another. It is a fan project, not an official PC release.

The project says it is not based on the decompilation project’s source code, although reverse-engineering work informed some enhancements and the port uses some headers and function definitions from that project. Its source code is available in the BanjoRecomp GitHub repository. PC Gamer covered the launch on January 25, 2026, describing the release as a native PC port shared with source code: PC Gamer’s launch coverage.

Does Banjo: Recompiled support ultrawide and high frame rates?

According to the project’s README, the game can render at the monitor’s refresh rate or at a manually selected rate. Terrain, objects, scrolling textures, effects, and HUD elements are rendered at high frame rates; the project says changing the rate does not alter gameplay. These are project-described capabilities, not the result of an independent performance test.

Banjo-Kazooie (Nintendo 64) (Pre-Played - Game Only)
  • Trouble is brewing on Spiral Mountain! Gruntilda the witch, wildly jealous of Tooty the Honey Bear's good looks; is determined to steal them for herself! But even as she whisks the helpless youngster off to her tower, Tooty's big brother Banjo and his loud-mouthed partner Kazooie are hot on the trail to rescue her...Aided by the mystical shaman Mumbo Jumbo, Banjo and Kazooie must tackle gloomy swamps, scorching deserts, towering mountain ranges and spooky haunted houses on their way to the final

The project also says it supports arbitrary aspect ratios, including ultrawide, and adapts effects for widescreen. On an ultrawide display, you can keep the HUD at 16:9. An optional cutscene pillarbox setting hides details outside the intended view.

If you encounter stuttering, the README warns that external frame limiters can cause problems and recommends adjusting the in-game frame-rate slider instead.

What controls and quality-of-life options are available?

Input mappings and in-game settings are configurable. Keyboard and mouse are supported, and controller mappings are available. An optional dual-analog-camera setting assigns camera control to the right stick, so a controller with a second stick is useful if you want that setup; no particular model is required.

  • Divide and conquer! The bear and bird are back, and this time, they can split up and work alone.
  • Play as Mumbo! Now you'll get to take control of the bone headed shaman himself.
  • Meet Humba Wumba! She'll transform Banjo into a number of objects, such as a walking, talking statue or tightie white shootin washer.

A note-saving option preserves collected notes after you leave a level or die. Turn it off if you prefer the original Nintendo 64 behavior, in which notes are not preserved in those situations.

Can you install mods and texture packs?

Yes. The project supports community mods and texture packs, including mods that add content or features. Its README directs players to the Banjo: Recompiled community page on Thunderstore. The project says a separate mod manager is neither required nor supported. PC Gamer’s launch coverage highlighted the Jiggies of Time and Nostalgia 64 mods, as well as an HD texture pack.

Which operating systems and hardware does it support?

The project lists Windows, Linux, and Mac support. Its Linux documentation describes a binary and a Flatpak for current Linux distributions, including Steam Deck. The project says native execution makes loading and transitions very fast; that is the project’s description, not an independently measured comparison.

The following are requirements published in the project README, accessed October 8, 2026. They may change, so check the current documentation and latest release if you are deciding whether your hardware is compatible.

  • Graphics: The GPU must support Direct3D 12.0 (Shader Model 6), Vulkan 1.2, or Metal Argument Buffers Tier 2. The project names the GeForce GT 630, Radeon HD 7750 (the 2012 card, not the RX 7000 series), and Intel HD 510 as the oldest GPUs expected to work for their respective vendors.
  • Mac: Apple Silicon or a seventh-generation Intel CPU, with macOS 13.0 or later.
  • x86-64 PCs: SSE4.1 is required.
  • ARM64 builds: The project says these work on any ARM64 CPU.

Does the PC port include Banjo-Kazooie?

No. The project does not distribute the game’s assets. Its documentation states: “The original game is required to build or run this project.” It specifies the North American Nintendo 64 1.0 version. You must supply your own copy; the project releases are not a game download.
