Banquet for Fools is a single-player action-adventure RPG from Hannah and Joseph Games. The full release arrived on March 5, 2026, following Early Access that began on September 30, 2024. Steam lists Windows and macOS versions and provides a demo.

You create four guards and send them to investigate the disappearance of every inhabitant of a farmhold on Invimona, an island populated by the Vollings. The setting is built around a society whose deities abandoned it, prompting a turn toward paganism, and a settlement project on land associated with a dead civilization. The party are not legendary heroes arriving with a prophecy; they are recruited guards trying to make sense of a community that has vanished.

That premise matters because the game treats information as part of the challenge. Conversations, observations and environmental details are not merely decoration on the way to the next marker. They are the material you use to decide where to go and what to try.

Does it have quest markers or a quest log?
No. The official Steam description explicitly says there is no auto-compass or quest log. Quests and requests can be recorded on scrolls, but you are expected to gather clues in settlements and across the island, then navigate from those clues rather than follow a permanent trail of icons.
In her March 24, 2026 PC Gamer review, Kerry Brunskill describes entering locations and other reminders into her own notes. That is the practical reality of the design: the game gives you information, but it does not always organize that information into a modern checklist. A name heard in a conversation, a landmark, a time of day and a seemingly minor instruction may all become important later.
How the investigation feels in practice
- Read and listen actively. A conversation can provide a destination, a condition or a relationship that is useful much later.
- Record your own route. Write down place names, unusual landmarks, requests and any stated timing requirements.
- Expect backtracking. You may learn what a clue means only after reaching another location or acquiring a new ability.
- Separate uncertainty from failure. When a quest appears stalled, the missing piece may be a detail you did not record, an interaction available only at a certain time or a location that has to be entered manually.
This is deliberate friction, not an omitted convenience feature. Players who enjoy reconstructing a situation from partial evidence will find that approach immersive. Players who want a journal to identify the next objective and a waypoint to lead them there will need patience.
How exploration and world-building work
Invimona is presented as a place you learn rather than a map you clear. The Vollings’ religious history, the abandoned settlement project and the disappearance at the farmhold give exploration a purpose beyond collecting resources. The island’s identity emerges through conversations, clues and the consequences of your decisions.
PC Gamer’s review calls the game demanding but very rewarding, emphasizing immersion, an unusual world and the sensation of learning the land. The same review also records the cost of that approach: vague clues, time-of-day requirements and one missed detail can leave a quest motionless. Those are not edge cases to ignore; they define the experience.
Why the lack of signposting can be rewarding
When a game does not draw a line between you and an objective, reaching the objective can feel like your deduction rather than the interface’s instruction. Remembering a character’s comment, recognizing a landmark and arriving at the right place at the right time creates a stronger connection to the setting than simply following a marker.

The trade-off is that your notes become part of the game’s interface. If you dislike keeping a separate notebook or revisiting conversations, the same design can feel opaque. There is no universal “best” amount of guidance here: the value depends on whether you prefer discovery to convenience.

You generate four companions for the investigation. Their statistics are not only combat numbers. The official listing says stats can affect dialogue choices with non-player characters and with one another, so party construction can change which conversations are available or how they unfold.
The companions also develop bonds during the journey. That gives the party a social arc in addition to equipment and abilities: the people you created are expected to respond to the road and to each other, not remain interchangeable combat slots.
Skill paths
The skill set is broad and intentionally eclectic. The listed disciplines include:
- Weapons and armor
- Pagan spells
- Animal binding
- Music
- Rogue abilities
Frequently used skills can receive advancement bonuses, encouraging you to develop a style through use rather than treating every skill as an equally convenient button. A character who repeatedly relies on one type of ability may grow into that role, while a more experimental party spreads attention across several disciplines.

How combat works
Combat combines brawl-style action with the ability to pause, choose actions and select targets. You directly control one guard at a time while the other three continue acting. You can switch leaders and call a companion for combo attacks, so the fight alternates between immediate movement and deliberate party management.
The “real-time with pause” label does not fully describe the attention required. PC Gamer’s account highlights active dodging, targeted tactical decisions and rally attacks timed with a QTE-like marker. You are not merely issuing a complete set of orders from safety; you are also positioning, reacting and choosing when to commit to a coordinated strike.
A typical encounter
- Take control of the guard who can answer the immediate threat. Use the active character’s movement and weapon or spell to manage the space around the party.
- Pause when the situation becomes crowded. Select targets and actions for the companions instead of relying entirely on their autonomous behavior.
- Dodge rather than absorb every hit. The action layer rewards attention to enemy attacks and positioning.
- Switch the active leader as the fight changes. A different guard may have the right range, defense or skill for the next target.
- Call in a companion for a combo. Watch for the timing prompt on rally attacks and execute it when the marker appears.
- Reassess after the first exchange. The best response may be a new target, a defensive action or a different active guard rather than repeating the opening sequence.
This structure gives the party a sense of activity even when you are focused on one character. It also means that a player who ignores the other guards’ behavior can lose control of a fight quickly. The system suits people who like direct action but still want pauses for tactical decisions; it is less suited to players seeking either a pure menu-driven RPG or a simple, uninterrupted brawler.

Intercession, pagan spells and choices after a fight
The intercession system connects the world’s religious conflict to progression. Communing with deities represented by statues can grant custom holy items, and those interactions involve donations and quests. PC Gamer’s launch coverage also describes learning pagan spells for use in combat and exploration. Religion is therefore not only background lore: it can affect what your party carries and what it can do.
Your guard role also changes how defeated enemies may be handled. PC Gamer reports two broad options: kill an enemy, with the risk of later ghost attacks, or stun and report a criminal for transport to a penal colony. Reporting an innocent character can get the party in trouble. These are described mechanics, not a guarantee that every enemy presents the same choice, so treat the situation in front of you rather than assuming a universal morality menu.
What those decisions add
- Violence has a possible future cost. Killing is not necessarily the cleanest way to end an encounter if ghost attacks follow.
- Restraint requires judgment. Reporting someone can be useful when the accusation is correct and harmful when it is not.
- Authority is part of the role. You are guards conducting an investigation, so the aftermath of a fight can matter as much as the victory itself.
The result is a game that asks what your party does with information and power, not only whether it can defeat the next opponent.

What the critics say—and what that means for a buyer
Brunskill’s PC Gamer review gives Banquet for Fools an 85 score and describes it as “demanding, but very rewarding,” praising its commitment to immersion and effort. The review’s reservations are equally important: unclear directions, timing conditions and missed details can produce frustration, especially when a stalled quest gives little indication of what you overlooked.

Those are preference-based comparisons, not a claim that one design is objectively superior. Banquet for Fools is strongest when you want the game to withhold convenience in order to make discovery meaningful.
Steam price, platforms and system requirements
When the Steam listing was accessed on October 13, 2026, it showed a $19.99 price for the game and a separate $6.99 digital soundtrack. Store prices and availability can change, so check the live Steam page before buying. The 15% launch discount reported by PC Gamer ended on March 19, 2026 and is historical rather than an available offer.

The store page recommends using the always-available demo to check whether the game works on your system. That is particularly useful here because the listed graphics requirement includes 8 GB of VRAM, and the macOS requirements are platform-specific.
Steam Deck status
PC Gamer’s March 24, 2026 review listed the game as “Playable” on Steam Deck. That is a dated publication status, not an independent hardware test in this article. If handheld compatibility is decisive, verify the current label on Steam and use the demo where possible.
How it compares with more conventional party RPGs

A conventional menu RPG may give you clearer objective tracking and more time to plan every turn. A straightforward action game may ask for faster reactions but less party administration. Banquet for Fools sits between those models and makes the player responsible for both immediate control and long-term interpretation.
Common friction points and practical responses
“I do not know where to go next.”
Review your notes for names, landmarks and conditions rather than searching randomly. Revisit conversations that mentioned a time of day or a specific person. Because there is no auto-compass or quest log, confirming the clue is part of solving the objective.
“The quest seems stuck.”
Look for a missed detail rather than assuming the game has broken. PC Gamer specifically notes that vague clues, timing requirements and overlooked information can stall progress. Check whether the next interaction is available at a different time, whether you have visited the location described rather than a nearby one, and whether an earlier conversation supplied a condition you did not record.

“Combat feels chaotic.”
Pause earlier, assign targets and use the active guard’s movement deliberately. Switch leaders when the current character is poorly positioned, and reserve companion calls for moments when you can read the rally timing marker. The system rewards alternating between action and short planning pauses.
“I want to know whether my computer can run it.”
Compare your machine with the current Steam requirements, paying particular attention to the Windows minimum of 8 GB RAM, 8 GB VRAM and 35 GB storage. For macOS, consult the separate requirements on the listing. The demo is the safest practical compatibility check because it is available before purchase.
Is Banquet for Fools worth playing?
Yes—if your idea of an RPG includes remembering details, making your own map of a strange place and accepting that the game may not tell you exactly what to do next. The combination of an island disappearance, generated guards, dialogue-sensitive stats, developing party bonds, pagan powers and action-tactical combat gives it a clear identity. Its world asks you to participate rather than consume a sequence of marked objectives.
No—if you need a precise quest journal, automatic waypoints or consistently obvious solutions. The same systems that create immersion can create friction, and the critic’s account makes clear that unclear clues and timing gates are central risks, not minor polish issues.
The best way to decide is to use the Steam demo, then judge whether writing down clues and learning Invimona feels like the point of the game or an obstacle between you and the next fight. For the right player, that effort is the reward.
