The codes are platform-specific: the reported PC sequence is 04-08-59 during play, while the Commodore 64 report uses C at the title screen. Neither should be treated as a universal code for every version.
This guide covers the Amiga, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and PC reports separately, then explains the Amiga controls, route hints, final-wizard tactic and ending conditions. A 2002 PlayStation 2 fighting game also called Barbarian is a different title and is not covered here.

First, identify which Barbarian you have
The 1987 game was developed by Psygnosis and published by Melbourne House on the PC listing. GameFAQs lists versions for Amiga, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, MSX, Atari ST and Sinclair ZX81/Spectrum, with the PC entry labeled “Barbarian (US, EU).” The title is easy to confuse with the unrelated 2002 PlayStation 2 game from Saffire and Titus, so check the machine, release and screen layout before trying a code.
The instructions below come from platform-filtered cheat reports, the Amiga manual and player-submitted Amiga hints. The cheat submissions were not independently tested, and a code reported for one port may do nothing on another.

Barbarian cheats and unlock codes by platform
| Platform or version | Where to enter it | Reported effect or discovery | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC listing (US, EU) | During gameplay | Enter 04-08-59 for infinite lives and invincibility. |
Reported by GameFAQs; not confirmed for every PC release or port. |
| Amiga | During gameplay | An Amiga hint page reports the same 04-08-59 sequence for invincibility. |
Treat it as a submitted hint, not a guaranteed code for every Amiga disk or loader. |
| Commodore 64 | At the title screen | Press C for invincibility. |
The report specifically warns that pits can still kill you. |
| Amstrad CPC cassette version | Not a normal gameplay code | A developer note is reported in the program code at address 0x4F94, including a remark aimed at would-be hackers. |
This is an Easter egg in the cassette code, not an in-game power-up or life code. |
How to try the PC sequence
- Start the 1987 Barbarian PC version, not the PlayStation 2 game.
- Begin a game and wait until normal gameplay is active; the report specifies entering the sequence during play rather than at the title screen.
- Type
04-08-59exactly, including the hyphens. - Test the result in a low-risk area. If nothing changes, restart and verify that your release and keyboard input match the reported PC listing.
Because the source is a community cheat entry, a failed attempt does not prove that you entered it incorrectly. Regional editions, cracks, compilations and emulator keyboard mappings can alter behavior.
How to try the Commodore 64 code
- Load the C64 version and remain at its title screen.
- Press
Cbefore starting the game. - Play normally and check whether ordinary damage is ignored.
- Continue to avoid pits. The report describes invincibility but explicitly does not promise immunity from falling hazards.
What the Amstrad CPC Easter egg means
The Amstrad report points to address 0x4F94 in the cassette-version code and describes a developer message to hackers. Accessing a memory address requires a monitor, debugger or suitable emulator tool; it is not a key combination intended for ordinary play. Make a copy of the tape image before examining memory, because changing bytes can make the game fail to load.

Amiga objective, story and ending
The Amiga manual casts you as Hegor in Durgan. Necron’s evil is powered by a crystal, and the central objective is to locate and destroy it. In the manual’s words: “In order to complete the game you must locate and destroy the crystal which is the source of the evil power of Necron.”

Destroying the crystal does not end the dangerous part immediately. The volcano erupts, and Hegor must return to the marsh before it blows. The elapsed score timer then runs backward as an escape countdown. A successful crystal fight followed by a failed escape is therefore not a completed run.

Amiga controls from the manual
These mappings are documented for the Amiga version only. Do not assume that the same keys exist on the C64, CPC, Atari ST, MSX, ZX81/Spectrum or PC releases.
| Action | Keyboard input | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Move | Arrow keys | Walk Hegor through rooms and line up jumps. |
| Jump | J or F5 |
Clear gaps, reach platforms and avoid floor hazards. |
| Run | R or F6 |
Build speed for movement and the escape sequence. |
| Attack | A or F7 |
Use Hegor’s weapon against enemies. |
| Defend | D or F8 |
Raise the shield when blocking is safer than trading hits. |
| Flee | F or F9 |
Retreat quickly, but drop the possessions Hegor is carrying. |
The flee action is not a free escape button: the manual says it drops your possessions. Use it when surviving or repositioning matters more than preserving collected items.

Amiga hints for difficult sections
Conserve arrows for fire-throwers
The Amiga hints advise saving arrows for the later fire-thrower enemies rather than spending every shot on early targets. Treat ammunition as a route resource. If an enemy can be passed safely with movement or a melee attack, preserve the arrow for a section where distance and projectile timing are more important.
Cross the pendulum with movement, not panic
The same hints recommend running and jumping around the pendulum. Watch its swing long enough to identify the opening, then commit to a run-and-jump rather than stopping beneath it. If you have to retreat, use the manual’s flee command carefully because it can discard possessions.

Collect the second bow cautiously
The second bow is useful for the dragon encounter, but the hints specifically advise care while collecting it. Approach only after nearby hazards are understood, and avoid spending the newly acquired ammunition on minor enemies before the dragon.
Use the second bow on the dragon
The player-submitted route advice recommends using the second bow against the dragon and then evading its fireball. Fire when you have a clear line, immediately prioritize the projectile’s trajectory, and keep enough room to jump or move away. The hint is tactical guidance rather than an official timing chart, so adapt to your version’s speed and control response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to beat the final wizard in Barbarian
- Keep the shield instead of treating it as disposable equipment. The Amiga hints say it is needed later.
- After the dragon, continue far enough to reach the shield; the hints place it two screens after the dragon.
- Equip or select the defense icon before the final wizard’s attack pattern leaves you trapped.
- When the wizard fires, use the shield to send the shot back at him. The reflected projectile is the key tactic described by the hints.
- Once the wizard is defeated, follow the route back toward the marsh. The crystal’s destruction starts the volcanic escape countdown, so do not linger to collect unnecessary items.
This sequence answers the common question “how do you beat the final wizard in Barbarian?”: the solution is the shield and the defense action, not simply more arrows. The shield’s location is easy to miss because it is not immediately beside the dragon.

- Check the title and year. A 2002 PlayStation 2 game shares the name but has different mechanics and secrets.
- Check the platform. The PC sequence, C64 title-screen key and Amstrad memory address are separate reports.
- Check the entry point. The PC and Amiga sequence is reported during gameplay; the C64 key is reported at the title screen.
- Check keyboard mapping. Emulators may capture number-row input, hyphens or function keys differently from original hardware.
- Check the release. A disk, tape, regional, compilation or cracked version can differ from the edition described by a cheat listing.
- Do not test invincibility in a pit. The C64 report specifically excludes that hazard.
- Keep a backup save or disk image. The Amstrad Easter egg involves program memory, and editing code can damage the image.
Platform differences that matter during a playthrough
The safest way to use these reports is to write down your exact platform and treat the code as a convenience, not as a replacement for route knowledge. The Amiga material is the most detailed: it documents controls, the crystal objective, the volcanic escape, arrow conservation, the dragon, the shield and the reflected final-wizard shot. The C64 report supplies a quick title-screen shortcut but still leaves pits dangerous. The PC report supplies a gameplay sequence, while the Amstrad report is an address-based Easter egg rather than a conventional cheat.
Modern controller accessories can make an original-style run more comfortable, but the Amiga manual only establishes joystick input; it does not establish compatibility between a particular modern controller and a specific computer or emulator. Verify platform and emulator support before buying or configuring hardware.
