Yes—but only in one specific interaction. When the Barbarian King has Barbarian Puppet equipped and activates its ability, the summoned Raged Barbarians use the Barbarian level you have researched in the Laboratory. Upgrading Barbarians does not increase the King’s hero level, change his base statistics, or upgrade Barbarian Puppet itself.
The direct answer
Upgrading the regular Barbarian troop affects the Barbarians summoned by the Barbarian King, not the King himself. The connection exists because Barbarian Puppet creates those troops during its active ability. A current Clash of Clans reference states that the Puppet Barbarians appear at the Barbarian level researched in your Laboratory.

That means a Laboratory upgrade can make the summoned group stronger, but it does not give the Barbarian King a level increase. The King still follows his own hero-upgrade path, while Barbarian Puppet follows the separate Hero Equipment progression system.
How the interaction works
1. The King must have Barbarian Puppet equipped
Supercell identifies Barbarian Puppet as Barbarian King Hero Equipment. Its defining effect is the ability to summon a pack of Raged Barbarians. If the King is wearing different equipment, that equipment controls the ability effect instead; upgrading Barbarians does not create a summon on its own.

2. The ability must be activated
Barbarian Puppet is an active ability. The researched Barbarian level matters when the King uses that ability and the game creates the Raged Barbarians. There is no always-on bonus that raises every Barbarian in your army simply because the King owns the Puppet.
3. The summoned troops use your researched Barbarian level
The current reference description ties the summoned Barbarians to the level you have researched for the ordinary Barbarian troop. In practical terms, the Laboratory is the relevant place to improve the summoned unit. The Puppet does not have a separately displayed Barbarian troop level that you must raise instead.
Which progression system controls which result?
| What you upgrade | What it controls | What it does not control |
|---|---|---|
| Barbarian research in the Laboratory | The level of Barbarians, including the Barbarians generated by Barbarian Puppet according to the current reference guide | The Barbarian King’s hero level or the Puppet’s equipment level |
| Barbarian King hero upgrades | The King’s own hero progression and combat capabilities | The Laboratory level of the Barbarian troop |
| Barbarian Puppet upgrades | The equipment’s own ability progression | The Laboratory research level of Barbarians |
| Changing the King’s equipment | Which equipment effects are available when the ability is used | Existing Laboratory research |
Keeping these systems separate explains most apparent contradictions. A player can have a highly upgraded King but a lower-level Barbarian troop, or the reverse. The summoned group follows the troop research level, while the hero and equipment retain their own progression.

What Barbarian Puppet actually does
Supercell’s December 12, 2023 Hero Equipment announcement describes the change from the old ability system: “Your old Hero abilities such as Barbarian King’s Iron Fist, are now broken down into various Hero Equipment that can be upgraded and replaced.” In the same announcement, Supercell gives Barbarian Puppet as the example that lets the King “summon a pack of Raged Barbarians.”
This matters because older explanations often treat Iron Fist as if it were still a single, permanent Barbarian King ability. Under the equipment system, the summon is tied to Barbarian Puppet. If you replace the Puppet with another item, the King no longer has that summon effect during the ability activation.
Supercell specifically contrasts Barbarian Puppet with Vampstache: equipping Vampstache removes the summon in favor of healing on attacks. Therefore, a missing summon is usually an equipment-choice issue, not evidence that your Barbarian research failed to apply.

How to make sure an upgrade will affect the summon
- Open the Barbarian King’s equipment screen. Confirm that Barbarian Puppet is in an active equipment slot. Do not assume the King is still using it after changing loadouts.
- Check the ability type. Barbarian Puppet is an active ability, so its effect appears when you manually activate the King’s ability in an attack.
- Check the Laboratory’s Barbarian research. Look at the current researched level for the regular Barbarian troop. That is the level used for the summoned Barbarians according to the current reference guide.
- Complete the Laboratory upgrade if one is running. A research upgrade does not apply before the game records it as completed. Until then, the previously researched level remains the applicable one.
- Test the correct ability. Enter an attack with Barbarian Puppet equipped and activate the King’s ability. Testing with another equipment item, or waiting for an automatic effect, will not demonstrate the Puppet summon.
- Recheck after changing equipment. If you switched to Vampstache or another item, restore Barbarian Puppet before judging whether the Barbarian research changed the summon.
Examples of what you should expect
Barbarian research is upgraded, Puppet remains equipped
The next time the King activates Barbarian Puppet, the generated Barbarians use the newly completed researched level. The King’s own level remains exactly what it was before the Laboratory upgrade.

The hero upgrade improves the King’s separate progression, but it does not raise the level of the Barbarians produced by the Puppet. Those troops continue to use the Barbarian level currently recorded in the Laboratory.
Barbarian Puppet is replaced by Vampstache
Upgrading Barbarians still improves the troop research level, but no Barbarian Puppet summon occurs because the equipment that supplies that summon is no longer equipped. Vampstache supplies its own attack-healing effect instead.

Barbarian Puppet is equipped but its ability is not activated
The equipment is present, yet its conditional effect has not been triggered. The researched level only becomes relevant to the summoned group when the active ability is used.
What this upgrade does not change
- It does not raise the Barbarian King’s level. Hero levels and Laboratory troop levels are separate progression tracks.
- It does not upgrade Barbarian Puppet. Equipment has its own upgrade path and must be improved through the Hero Equipment system.
- It does not make every Barbarian stronger automatically. The relevant effect concerns the Barbarians generated by the Puppet ability; it is not a universal hero aura described by the sources.
- It does not preserve the summon after an equipment swap. Replacing Barbarian Puppet changes the King’s available ability effect.
- It does not turn the old Iron Fist into a permanent summon. Supercell’s equipment model separates the former ability effects into replaceable equipment.
Why older guides may give a different answer
Before Hero Equipment, players commonly discussed the Barbarian King’s Iron Fist as one built-in hero ability. Supercell’s December 2023 announcement explains that old abilities, including Iron Fist, were divided into equipment that can be upgraded and replaced. A guide written around the old system may therefore describe the summon as part of the King himself rather than as an effect supplied by Barbarian Puppet.

Under the current system, the summon depends on the equipped item, and the King can trade that effect for another equipment effect. Town Hall and equipment availability context
Supercell Support’s “About Heroes & Pets” information states that Heroes can be used from Town Hall 4, while hero upgrades and equipment access begin at Town Hall 7. Those milestones explain why a newer account may be able to deploy the Barbarian King but not yet upgrade or equip him in the same way as a Town Hall 7-or-higher account.
The milestone does not alter the core interaction: once Barbarian Puppet is available and equipped, the summoned Barbarians use the researched Barbarian level described by the current reference guide.
Troubleshooting: the summon looks weaker or does not appear
The Barbarians appear at an older level
Confirm that the Laboratory research finished, rather than merely being started. Then verify the troop’s currently researched level and test a new activation with Barbarian Puppet equipped. A completed research level, not a queued upgrade, is the relevant value.

- Open the King’s equipment and verify that Barbarian Puppet, not Vampstache or another item, is equipped.
- Make sure you activated the King’s ability instead of waiting for a passive effect.
- Check that you are using the Barbarian King’s ability, not another hero’s equipment or ability.
The King improved but the summon did not
That result is expected when only the hero was upgraded. The King’s hero progression and the Laboratory’s Barbarian research are independent. To change the summoned troop’s researched level, the Barbarian research itself must be completed.
Different guides disagree about the exact linkage
The official Supercell material confirms the equipment-dependent summon but does not spell out the Laboratory-level relationship in the retrieved announcement. The statement that summoned Barbarians use the researched Barbarian level comes from a current secondary reference updated for Town Hall 18 in October 2026. Treat that specific linkage as the documented current reference behavior, while relying on Supercell for the equipment and ability framework.
Bottom line for upgrade planning
If your goal is stronger Barbarians from the Barbarian King’s ability, prioritize the Barbarian Laboratory research and keep Barbarian Puppet equipped when you want the summon. If your goal is a stronger King, upgrade the hero separately. If your goal is a stronger summon ability itself, improve Barbarian Puppet through Hero Equipment. None of these three upgrades substitutes for the others.
