Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsbase.dll errors usually point to a damaged or incomplete application installation, not a missing Windows file. When the affected program is Avast Antivirus, repair Avast first rather than downloading base.dll or copying it into a Windows folder.
The filename is not unique, however. A base.dll in an Avast directory is different from one in an Autodesk folder, game directory, or another vendor’s installation. Use the full path and the executable named in the error to identify the correct owner.
What base.dll is
One documented Avast file family identifies base.dll as the Avast English Basic Module, published by AVAST Software. It belongs to Avast Antivirus and is normally stored under the application’s installation directory or a language/resource subdirectory.
It is not a standard Windows component, and it is not automatically part of the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.

Historical Avast installations placed the file in paths similar to:
C:Program FilesAlwil SoftwareAvast4ENGLISHBase.dll
The exact folder depends on the Avast release and installation location. Do not assume that every file called base.dll belongs to Avast.
Some file indexes also associate the 64-bit version 18.0.0.5870, listed at about 1.13 MB, with another product rather than Avast. Do not use that version information to select a replacement file. The product path, calling executable, publisher, and digital signature are more useful than the filename alone.
Check the owner before repairing anything
Do this before running repair commands or restoring a quarantined file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Read the complete error
Common reported variants include:
- “The program can’t start because base.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting base.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading base.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because base.dll was not found.”
- “base.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “This application failed to start because Base.dll was not found.”
- “A required component is missing: Base.dll.”
These are common indexed error forms, not necessarily official Avast wording. Record the executable named in the message. For example, an Avast executable points you toward Avast repair, while a game launcher points you toward that game’s repair function.
2. Inspect the file path
If the message or Event Viewer identifies a path, check it in File Explorer.
- Press
Win+E. - Browse to the folder containing
base.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check Product name, File description, and Original filename.
- Open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer.
- Select a signature, choose Details, and confirm whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
An Avast-associated file should be located with Avast files and identify Avast or its publisher. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a game directory, or an Autodesk directory may belong to another application.
Do not move the file while investigating. A program may depend on a particular copy in its own directory.
3. Check whether Avast is installed
Open Settings with Win+I, select Apps, then Installed apps. Search for Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security.
If Avast is not installed but the error names an Avast executable, look for an incomplete uninstall, a leftover startup entry, or a restored backup. The safest repair is usually to reinstall the application that owns the executable, not to restore a standalone DLL.
Fix 1: Repair Avast from its installed setup
Time needed: about 10 to 20 minutes, plus any restart.

This is the best first fix when the path or executable clearly belongs to Avast. Repair replaces damaged application components while preserving the installation process managed by Avast.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Apps and Features.
- Find Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Select Uninstall again if Windows asks you to confirm.
- When the Avast Setup window opens, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows if Avast requests it.
On some Windows installations, use the older Control Panel route:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Right-click Avast in Programs and Features.
- Select Uninstall.
- Choose Repair in Avast Setup.
After the restart, launch Avast and then start the program that produced the error. The repair worked if the program opens without the base.dll message and Avast’s main interface loads normally.
Repair may reset customized Avast settings. If repair fails, the setup window does not open, or the same error returns immediately, continue with a complete removal and reinstall.
Fix 2: Check Avast Quarantine safely
Time needed: about 5 to 15 minutes.
Avast may have quarantined or removed base.dll after a detection, update, cleanup operation, or false positive. Do not restore a file solely because its name matches the missing filename.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Avast.
- Open Quarantine.
- Find the entry for
base.dll. - Review its original location, detection name, and date.
- Open the available details or More options menu.
- Restore the file only if its original path belongs to Avast and its authenticity is confirmed.
- Use Restore and add exception only when you are confident that the file is legitimate and was incorrectly detected.
Restoring a malicious or tampered DLL can expose the computer again. If the file is unsigned, came from an unexpected folder, or Avast still identifies it as dangerous, do not restore it. Repair or reinstall Avast instead.
The fix worked when Avast starts normally and the affected executable no longer reports the missing file. If Avast immediately quarantines the replacement again, investigate the detection and scan the computer rather than repeatedly restoring the file.
Fix 3: Completely reinstall Avast
Time needed: about 20 to 40 minutes.
Use a clean reinstall when repair does not restore the file, the installation is badly damaged, or Avast was partially removed.
- Save your work and close running applications.
- Download Avast’s official uninstall tool from Avast’s support site.
- If instructed by the tool, restart Windows in Safe Mode.
- Run
avastclear.exe. - Select the installed Avast product.
- Choose Remove or the available Remove and Reinstall option.
- Allow the tool to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Avast again using Avast’s official installation package.
Do not use a DLL archive as a substitute for the installer. Avast’s installer supplies the matching files, services, configuration, and dependencies together.

Time needed: about 10 to 30 minutes.
If base.dll is in a game, Autodesk directory, utility folder, or another vendor’s directory, Avast repair will not correct it.

The correct result is that the owning application starts with its own files restored. If a fresh installation creates the same error, note the exact path and executable again. The problem may be a missing dependency rather than base.dll itself.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
Time needed: about 15 to 30 minutes.
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL is missing. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by base.dll.
Look for a second error that names a file such as:
MSVCP*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dllapi-ms-win-crt*.dll
Only repair or install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages when the error identifies that runtime or the application’s documentation requires it.
Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Install the architecture required by the application:
Recommended Free Tools
- A 32-bit application needs the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows.
- A 64-bit application needs the x64 package.
- Some computers legitimately need both.
Restart Windows after installing or repairing the runtime, then test the application again. Installing Visual C++ will not normally restore an Avast application DLL or fix an unrelated base.dll.
Fix 6: Repair corrupted Windows components
Time needed: about 15 to 45 minutes, not including downloads or restart time.
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally reconstruct a third-party Avast DLL. Use them when Windows itself is unstable, several system files are failing, or the problem began with broader system corruption.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the component source that SFC may need, while SFC checks and replaces corrupted protected Windows files.
The result may say that no integrity violations were found, that corrupted files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. After restarting, test the affected application.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is an incomplete Avast installation or a quarantined file. Outbyte PC Repair can show what system issues need attention before you repeat the same manual scans; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version.
If SFC reports unrepaired files, install pending Windows updates and run the scan again. If Windows remains unstable, continue with System Restore or investigate disk health.
Fix 7: Install Windows updates
Time needed: about 10 minutes plus download and restart time.
Windows Update is supporting maintenance, not the primary fix for an Avast-owned DLL.
- Press
Win+I. - Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
Use this step when the error began after a failed update, Windows components are damaged, or several unrelated applications are malfunctioning. Do not expect Windows Update to supply an Avast application file.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: about 20 to 45 minutes.
System Restore can help when the failure began immediately after an Avast update, application installation, driver change, or other system modification.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review applications and updates that will be removed or rolled back.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the process.
System Restore preserves personal files but can remove recently installed applications, drivers, and updates. Test Avast and the affected application after Windows returns to the desktop.
Fix 9: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
Time needed: about 15 to 30 minutes.
A driver is not the usual cause of an Avast base.dll error. Consider this step only if the error began alongside graphics, storage, security, or other device failures.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failure.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and driver date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a driver-specific failure, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not replace base.dll because Device Manager shows a warning icon.
Manually checking dozens of driver versions is slow and makes it easy to install the wrong package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its free scan reports the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run this as a generic missing-DLL fix:
regsvr32 base.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. An ordinary Avast application or resource DLL generally is not a self-registering COM component.
If regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that result is expected and does not prove that Windows is damaged. Registering the DLL will not rebuild a missing Avast installation or correct a dependency problem.
Do not copy base.dll into Windows folders
Never place an Avast DLL in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows and system components. Copying an application DLL there can cause version conflicts, load the wrong file, or create a security problem. Windows searches application directories according to the program’s loading rules, so the correct repair is to restore the file to its owning application through that application’s installer.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may belong to a different product.
- It may be the wrong version.
- It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may be modified or malicious.
- It may satisfy one error while leaving the damaged installation untouched.
- It may introduce a new dependency or loader error.
Use the official Avast installer for Avast files, the affected game or application’s repair feature for its files, and Microsoft’s official packages for Windows components and Visual C++ runtimes.
Causes of a base.dll error
| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete Avast update or installation | Repair Avast, then reinstall if necessary |
| Avast quarantine or removal | Check the quarantine record; restore only after verification |
| Manual deletion or cleanup software | Repair or reinstall the owning application |
| Wrong product identified | Follow the path and executable to the correct vendor |
| Wrong architecture or version | Install the matching application build |
| Missing dependency | Identify and repair the dependency named by the error |
| Disk or Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC, and check disk health |
| Malware or tampering | Scan with Windows Security or another trusted current security product |
| Recent system change | Use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists |
Persistent-error checklist
If the error remains after repair or reinstall:
- Record the complete error text.
- Record the executable that fails.
- Record the full path shown in the error or Event Viewer.
- Inspect
base.dllProperties and Digital Signatures. - Check Avast Quarantine and Windows Security Protection History.
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Look for a second missing dependency.
- Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs and Application for the failing executable.
- Run a trusted malware scan.
- Check disk health if files repeatedly disappear or become corrupted.
- Test the application from a new Windows user profile only as a later diagnostic step.
If Avast repair and reinstall succeed but another application still reports base.dll, Avast was probably not the owner. Follow the path and executable instead of repeating Windows repair commands.
FAQ
Is base.dll a Windows file?
Not in the Avast file family. An Avast base.dll is an application component, not a normal Windows component. Another vendor can use the same filename, so verify the path before deciding who owns it.
Is base.dll part of Visual C++?
No conclusion can be made from the .dll extension alone. Repair Visual C++ only when the error separately names a Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or api-ms-win-crt.
Should I download a replacement base.dll?
No. Use Avast repair or reinstall when Avast owns the file. If another application owns it, use that application’s official repair or installer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I run SFC for a missing Avast DLL?
SFC repairs protected Windows files. It normally does not restore a third-party Avast DLL. Use it when Windows has broader corruption, not as the primary Avast repair.
Can I restore base.dll from Avast Quarantine?
Only after confirming the original path, publisher, signature, detection details, and authenticity. If there is any doubt, reinstall Avast rather than restoring the file.
Does 32-bit versus 64-bit matter?
Yes. The application and its DLL must use compatible architectures. A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows still needs its 32-bit files and dependencies. Do not substitute a file based only on its name or reported size.
What does “specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that the named DLL is missing, but it can also mean that Windows cannot load a dependency required by that DLL. Check for a second filename in the error, installer log, or application event.
When should I use Device Manager or Windows Features?
Device Manager applies to hardware-driver problems, not ordinary Avast DLL repair. Windows Features is relevant only when the error specifically points to an optional Windows component. Neither tool is a substitute for repairing the application that owns base.dll.
