What SSH does on a VPS
SSH (Secure Shell) gives you an encrypted terminal session to a remote server. A VPS owner can use that session to install software, inspect logs, manage services, edit configuration files and move backups without a web control panel. The same connection carries file transfers and, when needed, other secure tunnels.

Examples below use the form user@host. Replace user with the Linux account on your VPS and host with its DNS name or IP address. A non-standard SSH port is shown as 2222; use the port assigned to your server.
Prepare a safe first connection
- Have the VPS address, an existing account and its password (or a provider console) available for the initial setup.
- Know whether SSH listens on port 22 or another port.
- Install an OpenSSH client. Linux and macOS normally include one. Windows PowerShell includes the
sshclient on current versions, but does not bundlessh-copy-id. - Keep a provider console or an already working SSH session available while changing server authentication settings.
On the first connection, SSH displays the server’s host-key fingerprint and asks whether to trust it. Accept only when the fingerprint matches a value supplied by your provider or an administrator. The accepted key is saved in your local known_hosts file and is checked on subsequent connections.

Connect to the VPS with ssh
Standard port
ssh user@host
SSH prompts for the account password unless a usable private key is already loaded. After authentication, commands run on the VPS rather than on your local computer. Leave the session with exit or by pressing Ctrl-D.
Non-standard port
ssh -p 2222 user@host
The option is lowercase -p. Port options are case-sensitive; this differs from scp, which uses uppercase -P.
Choose a particular private key
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 user@host
Use this when your key is not in a default location or when several identities exist. The private key stays on your local machine; only its matching public key belongs on the VPS.
Create an SSH key pair with ssh-keygen
Generate keys locally, not in the VPS shell. An Ed25519 key is the usual modern choice and is smaller and faster than older RSA keys. RSA remains useful when a legacy system does not accept Ed25519.
| Key type | Command | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Ed25519 | ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "[email protected]" |
Default for current OpenSSH clients and servers. |
| RSA 4096 | ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 |
Compatibility with older systems that do not support Ed25519. |
The command asks where to save the key and whether to protect it with a passphrase. Keep the suggested path unless you have a reason to organize multiple identities. A passphrase protects the private key if the file is copied; an SSH agent can cache it for the current login session.

You receive two files: the private key (for example, ~/.ssh/id_ed25519) and the public key with a .pub suffix. Never paste the private key into a server, ticket or chat. The public key is the one installed in the account’s authorized_keys file.
Install the public key with ssh-copy-id
Default port
ssh-copy-id user@host
Enter the account password when prompted. The utility appends your public key to the remote account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Test key login in a new terminal before closing the password-authenticated session:
ssh user@host
Non-standard port
ssh-copy-id -p 2222 user@host
ssh-copy-id also uses lowercase -p, just like ssh.
When the utility is unavailable
Windows PowerShell does not bundle ssh-copy-id. Use your provider’s console or an existing login, create ~/.ssh for the target account, and append the complete contents of your local id_ed25519.pub (or RSA .pub) file to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Ensure the directory is accessible only to the account and the authorized-keys file is not writable by other users. Then open a second local terminal and test key login. Do not disable passwords until that test succeeds.
Copy individual files with scp
scp is the straightforward choice for a one-time upload or download. Its paths use the form user@host:/remote/path.
| Task | Command |
|---|---|
| Upload one file | scp file user@host:/path/ |
| Download one file | scp user@host:/path/file . |
| Copy a directory recursively | scp -r dir user@host:/path/ |
| Upload through port 2222 | scp -P 2222 file user@host:/path/ |
The port switch is uppercase -P. Add an identity with -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 if the required key is not selected automatically. Quote local or remote paths containing spaces so your shell does not split them into separate arguments.

Synchronize folders with rsync
Use rsync when you will repeat a transfer or move a large directory. It compares source and destination and sends only changed data, while SSH provides the transport.
rsync -avz -e ssh src/ user@host:dst/
-apreserves the normal file metadata needed for an archive-style copy.-vprints the files and actions being processed.-zcompresses data during transfer, which can help on slower links.-e sshexplicitly selects SSH as the remote shell.
Preview changes before making them
rsync -avzn -e ssh src/ user@host:dst/
The n option performs a dry run. Read the list carefully, especially when the source path ends with a slash: src/ means “contents of src,” while src can create a directory named src at the destination.
Use --delete only deliberately
rsync -avz --delete -e ssh src/ user@host:dst/
--delete removes destination files that are absent from the source. Always run the equivalent command with -n first and confirm the deletion list. A mistaken source path can otherwise erase a whole destination tree.
For a non-standard port, pass it through SSH:
rsync -avz -e "ssh -p 2222" src/ user@host:dst/
Debug a failed connection with verbose SSH output
ssh -v user@host
Verbose mode prints the connection stages: name resolution, TCP connection, host-key checks, identity files and authentication methods. It helps distinguish a wrong address or port from a rejected key. Use -vv or -vvv for progressively more detail when the first level is not enough, but avoid publishing logs that reveal usernames, hostnames or paths.
- Connection refused: verify the address, port and that the VPS is running an SSH service.
- Permission denied (publickey): confirm you are using the intended account, that the matching public key is in that account’s
authorized_keys, and that your client is offering the expected private key. - Password prompts continue: key authentication may not have been installed for this account, or the client may be selecting a different identity.
- Timeout: check the VPS firewall, provider network rules and the configured SSH port.
Resolve an “host key changed” warning after a reinstall
When a VPS is rebuilt, its host key can legitimately change. SSH then warns that the key for the hostname no longer matches the entry in known_hosts. Do not bypass this warning blindly: verify that the address now points to your freshly installed server.

After verification, remove the old entry:
ssh-keygen -R hostname
For a server reached on a non-standard port, identify the host in the same form used by SSH, such as [hostname]:2222, if that is how it appears in the warning. Reconnect, review the new fingerprint and accept it only after it has been verified.
Disable password login only after key access works
Server-side SSH settings are normally in /etc/ssh/sshd_config and require administrative privileges to edit. The safe order is:
Recommended Free Tools
- Generate a key and install its public half.
- Open a second terminal and prove that key login works.
- Keep the original session open as a recovery path.
- Back up the configuration, then set
PubkeyAuthentication yesandPasswordAuthentication no. - Validate the configuration with
sshd -tif that command is available on your distribution. - Apply the change using the service command documented by your distribution (commonly a systemd
sshservice, but names vary). - Test a brand-new connection before ending the original session.
The default for the OpenBSD PasswordAuthentication keyword is yes, but distribution files can override defaults. A syntax check catches malformed settings before they lock you out; service names and reload procedures differ between operating systems, so confirm them locally.
Choose a root-login policy
PermitRootLogin accepts yes, prohibit-password, forced-commands-only or no. The choices have different effects:
| Value | Effect | Typical reason |
|---|---|---|
yes |
Allows normal remote root authentication methods that are otherwise enabled. | Only where direct root access is explicitly required and tightly controlled. |
prohibit-password |
Disallows password-based root login while allowing key-based root login. | Transition or administration workflows that still require root keys. |
forced-commands-only |
Permits root keys only when they specify a forced command. | Restricted automation rather than interactive administration. |
no |
Disables remote root login. | Use a normal account and elevate with sudo. |
Defaults are distribution-specific. For example, RHEL 10 defaults PermitRootLogin to prohibit-password, while older or different distributions may ship another value. Check the active configuration on the target release instead of assuming a universal default.

Scope settings with a Match block
PasswordAuthentication and PermitRootLogin can be scoped to an address using an SSH Match block. This allows a narrowly defined exception, but block order and indentation matter. Validate the effective configuration and test from every network path before relying on a conditional rule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which SSH port option should I use?
Use lowercase -p with ssh, ssh-copy-id and the SSH command passed to rsync. Use uppercase -P with scp.
Can I delete a host-key warning without checking it?
No. A changed key can indicate a legitimate VPS reinstall or a man-in-the-middle attack. Verify the server and fingerprint first, then use ssh-keygen -R to remove the old entry.
Should I choose Ed25519 or RSA?
Choose Ed25519 for current systems. Use RSA with 4096 bits when compatibility with an older SSH implementation requires it.
What is the safest time to turn off SSH passwords?
Only after a key-based login succeeds in a separate terminal. Keep the working session open, validate the configuration, apply it, and test another new connection.
