Do not treat Treasure hunting, energy management or team building as optional extras: permanent Treasures, appropriate upgrade timing and a flexible lineup determine how far your account can go.
Early priorities are straightforward. Keep the cats you actually deploy levelled, use Study when XP is your limiting resource, raise Cat Energy when your reserve is stopping your sessions, and actively collect story Treasures. Build a general-purpose team first, then replace individual slots with trait-specific answers as stages become more demanding.

How beginner progression works
The game is built around a repeating stage loop. You select a stage, deploy cats and the Cat Cannon, clear the enemies, receive rewards such as XP, and spend those rewards on stronger units or base improvements. The official PONOS description summarizes the central reward in simple terms: “Get XP by clearing stages!”

- Push the story map. Attempt the next stage that your current lineup can reasonably handle. Advancing exposes new stages, rewards and progression gates.
- Spend XP deliberately. Upgrade the cats that appear in your battles rather than distributing XP across every entry in the Cat Guide.
- Improve the base systems that solve your current bottleneck. Study increases XP earned after a stage, while Cat Energy upgrades increase the amount of energy you can hold.
- Return to earlier stages for Treasures. Treasure effects are permanent account-wide advantages, so farming them is part of normal progression, not merely completionism.
- Adjust the lineup to the stage. Keep a dependable core, but swap units when enemy traits, range, status effects or stage rules demand a different answer.
If a stage defeats you repeatedly, do not automatically pour all available XP into one favorite cat. First identify whether the failure is caused by weak frontline coverage, insufficient range, an enemy trait, a missing control effect, or a lack of permanent Treasure bonuses.

What to upgrade first
There is no universal beginner tier list in the documented material, and rarity alone does not tell you which investment is best. Upgrade order should follow the problem you are experiencing and the jobs your team must perform.

Study versus Cat Energy
Study and Cat Energy solve different constraints. Study compounds future XP rewards, making each successful clear more valuable. Cat Energy does not increase the reward from a stage; it lets you start more stages before waiting. Choose Study during an XP shortage and Cat Energy when your play session is being cut short by the energy cap. If neither resource is currently limiting you, spend XP on the units that are actually deployed.
Level the core, not the entire catalogue
A small, dependable core is more useful than many under-levelled options. Keep several inexpensive blockers available to absorb pressure, maintain at least one or two ranged damage dealers, and reserve slots for units that answer the traits or effects shown by the stage. This approach also makes XP spending easier to evaluate: every level should improve a role you use.

Unit levels, caps and evolution
Unit levels directly improve health and attack. The initial level cap is 10. User Rank and story progression can raise caps for most units, so a unit that stops at level 10 early in your account may become eligible for additional levels later.
Level 10 is also the normal early evolution milestone for a unit that has an Evolved Form. Evolution is not universal; check the individual unit’s information before assuming that a level increase will unlock a new form. When an evolved form exists, reaching the milestone can change the unit’s appearance and capabilities, but you should still judge it by the job it performs in your lineup.

A practical leveling test
- If a blocker is being defeated before your damage dealers can work, level the blocker or add another low-cost frontliner.
- If enemies are reaching your base because your damage arrives too slowly, level a ranged attacker or add another source of damage.
- If a stage is lost to a particular trait or effect, look for a unit that addresses that problem instead of repeatedly raising a generalist.
- If a unit is rarely deployed, postpone its upgrades until a stage specifically gives it a job.
Treasures: the permanent progression you should not skip
Story-stage Treasures come in Inferior, Normal and Superior tiers. Regional Treasure collections grant permanent improvements to game systems and to matchups against enemy types. Those bonuses apply to your account rather than disappearing after one battle, which is why the Treasure reference describes obtaining them as “paramount” for significant progress.
How to use Treasures in your route
- Push forward until a story stage becomes difficult or a region offers a useful Treasure opportunity.
- Replay the relevant stages and collect their available Treasure tiers instead of treating the first clear as the end of the stage’s value.
- Prioritize completing regional sets when their bonuses improve systems or enemy matchups that affect your current route.
- Return to progression only after the permanent bonus has made the next group of stages more manageable.
Treasure farming is especially valuable when raw unit levels are no longer solving a problem. A stronger permanent system bonus can improve every later attempt, whereas XP spent on a single unit helps only when that unit is present and suited to the stage.

Cat Energy is consumed by most stages and regenerates automatically. In the documented system, regeneration begins at one energy unit per minute. Challenge Battle, Catamin Stages and Catclaw Dojo are listed as exceptions, so do not assume every mode follows the same cost or recovery rules.
Natural regeneration
Natural regeneration is time-based and costs nothing from your inventory. Use it for ordinary progression, XP stages or Treasure farming when those stages are available. Because the reserve has a cap, leaving the game full for a long period can waste potential regeneration; spending energy before the cap is reached keeps the timer productive.
What Leadership does
Leadership is an inventory refill rather than a faster regeneration rate. Using one restores energy to its maximum and adds the energy you had remaining as overflow. Overflow is spent first, and normal regeneration pauses while overflow remains. For example, using Leadership while you still have energy does not erase that energy; it puts the refill above the normal cap so it can be consumed before the clock resumes.

Leadership can come from several clear and reward systems, including subchapter endings, events and User Rank rewards, along with other activities listed by the game. Availability and quantities depend on the current content schedule.

Save Leadership for a concentrated session: a valuable XP or Treasure-farming window, an important stage chain, or a time-limited event in which several clears are worth doing together. Spend natural regeneration on routine attempts and use Leadership when waiting would interrupt a planned run. There is no fixed best refill timetable because stage costs, available events and your own reserve change over time.
How many cats fit in a team?
The documented team-formation page describes a battle lineup of up to 10 cats, arranged as five on the first page and five on the second. The first five can activate Cat Combos. You can consult that page here: team formation reference.
Equip-slot totals are more version-sensitive. One update-history report describes an expansion from 18 to 19 equip slots and says slots above 10 require Meow Medals and Cat Food, while also warning that its coverage of newer versions is incomplete. Treat those figures as historical guidance rather than a guaranteed current value. Open the Equip screen in your own app to see the live number of available slots and the exact unlock requirements for your version.
Understanding pages, slots and battle selection
Having more equip slots does not mean every battle deploys more than 10 cats. Slots are the saved formations you can prepare; the battle lineup is the group selected for a particular stage. The battle interface supports multiple equipped cats, item selection and a two-column display option, so organize formations around clear purposes rather than filling every slot with similar units.

Building your first useful lineup
Start with a general-purpose formation that can survive unfamiliar stages. A sensible structure contains several inexpensive blockers, one or two ranged attackers and a few units that answer the traits or effects likely to appear in the current story region.
What each role contributes
- Blockers: inexpensive units that keep enemies away from your damage dealers and base.
- Ranged attackers: units that deal damage without standing on the frontline, giving you a way to punish enemies held by blockers.
- Trait or effect answers: units selected for the enemy type, range problem or control effect present in the stage.
- Flexible damage slots: units that can replace a specialist when the stage does not require a particular counter.
Replace units by role and performance, not by rarity alone. A lower-rarity cat that reliably blocks, reaches a useful range or counters the stage can contribute more than a rarer unit with no practical job in that battle.
Generalist versus specialized teams

Keep a generalist formation as your default and make specialized formations when a known stage justifies the effort. The purpose of extra equip slots is to save these alternatives so you can switch roles without rebuilding every lineup.

Deeper investment improves the statistics of a core unit, while broader investment gives you more ways to answer different stage designs. Early accounts usually need both, but the balance should follow the failure you can observe.
- Choose deeper levels when one of your core blockers collapses too quickly or your main attacker cannot finish enemies before the frontline fails.
- Choose broader coverage when your current team handles one enemy type but has no response to another trait, range pattern or status effect.
- Use Treasure collection to improve the whole account when repeated losses suggest a permanent system or matchup bonus is missing.
This is why a single favorite cat should not consume every XP point. A favorite can be part of the core, but a team with no blocker, ranged damage or stage-specific answer will remain vulnerable regardless of that unit’s level.

Beginner troubleshooting checklist
“I cannot afford enough upgrades.”
Check whether XP is the bottleneck. Upgrade Study so successful clears produce more XP, then focus that income on deployed units and relevant base systems. Avoid spending on cats that are not solving a current role.
“I run out of energy before I finish.”
Raise Cat Energy; each listed base-upgrade level adds 10 to the maximum reserve. Continue using natural regeneration for ordinary stages and reserve Leadership for a concentrated session rather than spending every refill immediately.
“My team loses before it reaches the enemy base.”
Review frontline coverage first. Add or level inexpensive blockers, then check whether your ranged attackers are surviving long enough to contribute. If the stage has a prominent trait or effect, replace a generic slot with an appropriate answer.

Return for Treasures. Inferior, Normal and Superior rewards contribute to regional collections, and the resulting permanent bonuses can matter more than another isolated level on a unit that is already performing adequately.
“My slot count does not match an online guide.”
Use the Equip screen in your current app as the authority. Team capacity and the number of purchasable or unlockable formations can change between versions, and historical reports may not describe the build you are running.
A repeatable decision routine
- Inspect the next stage and note the enemy traits, effects and pressure pattern.
- Select a generalist formation if the threats are unknown; otherwise load the specialized formation saved for that matchup.
- Spend available energy on progression, XP or Treasure work that addresses your immediate bottleneck.
- After a loss, change one role at a time so you can identify whether the problem was frontline durability, damage, range or a missing counter.
- Use XP on the cats that proved useful, improve Study or Cat Energy when those resources are limiting your route, and save Leadership for a deliberate multi-stage session.
Following that routine keeps progression focused: stages provide XP, upgrades improve the units and base systems, Treasures strengthen the account permanently, and team roles adapt as the map introduces new demands.
