Low FPS in Fortnite, Warzone, Apex Legends or another battle-royale game usually comes from one of four causes: settings that overload the GPU or CPU, the game running on the wrong graphics processor, outdated or conflicting software, or heat and hardware limits. Measure the problem first, then apply one change at a time so you can identify what actually helped.

Identify what “low FPS” actually means

Do not begin by changing every graphics option. First decide whether you have a low average frame rate, sudden drops, or stutter. These symptoms can have different causes and different fixes.

Record a useful baseline

  • Write down the game and mode, such as a standard match, ranked match or practice area.
  • Record your display resolution, 3D resolution or render scale, quality preset and selected renderer.
  • Note the average FPS and the lowest feeling moments. A stable but modest frame rate is a different problem from an otherwise high frame rate that repeatedly collapses.
  • Observe whether the hitch occurs when landing, entering a busy area, turning quickly, opening the inventory or during a fight.
  • Record whether the problem began after a game patch, Windows update, graphics-driver update or hardware change.

Use the game’s own performance overlay when available. Frame-time consistency matters as much as the average number: uneven frame delivery feels like a freeze even when the displayed average looks acceptable.

Check the game’s requirements before changing hardware

Compare your processor, graphics device, memory and operating-system version with the current requirements for the specific title. Requirements and supported renderers can change after patches, so use the game’s current support page rather than a retailer’s old listing.

A system that barely meets a minimum requirement may need a low-scalability or Performance Mode to remain playable. A system that comfortably exceeds the requirements but still hitches points more strongly toward drivers, GPU selection, background activity, temperatures or storage and memory health.

Confirm the game is using the intended renderer

Some games offer multiple renderers or a low-fidelity mode. The menu names differ by title. Change only this setting, restart the game if requested, and repeat the same test route. Keep a note of the old setting so you can revert it.

Lower the settings that cost the most performance

Start with the options that create the greatest CPU or GPU workload, not with cosmetic settings that have little effect on frame rate. Test one change at a time, then keep the setting only if it improves your baseline without introducing a new problem.

Setting to test Why it can help Typical trade-off
3D resolution or render scale Reduces the number of pixels the GPU must render. Softer or less detailed image; lower internal resolution can be more noticeable than other changes.
Overall quality preset Changes several expensive options together for a quick diagnostic. Image quality may drop more than necessary; fine-tune individual options afterward.
Shadows and global illumination Often impose substantial GPU work and can also affect scene-processing load. Less depth and visual definition in buildings and terrain.
Effects, particles and post-processing Reduces workload during explosions, storms, smoke and other busy scenes. Fewer visual effects or a flatter-looking image.
View distance, foliage and environmental detail Can reduce CPU and GPU work in large outdoor scenes. Objects and terrain details may appear later or at lower quality.
Anti-aliasing and reflections Lower settings can reduce rendering cost, especially at higher resolutions. More jagged edges or less accurate reflections.

Lowering every option is not always the best result. Once the game is stable, raise one setting at a time until you find the best balance between clarity and frame-time consistency. Keep the 3D-resolution change separate from the quality-preset change so you know which adjustment produced the improvement.

Use a title-specific Performance Mode when it is available

Fortnite’s Performance Mode is designed for less powerful systems. Epic describes it as reducing memory use and lightening CPU and GPU load by trading visual quality, which can produce a smoother frame rate. Other games may call a similar option Low, Low Scalability, Competitive, Performance or another title-specific name; the menu, renderer and behavior are not universal.

Epic’s Fortnite support gives illustrative 720p results from a standard Squads match: one laptop example moved from 24 FPS in a low-scalability mode to 61 FPS in Performance Mode, while another moved from 18 FPS to 45 FPS. These are examples from Epic’s support material, not a promise for your hardware, current game patch or another battle royale.

How to test the mode

  1. Open the game’s video or graphics settings.
  2. Choose the named Performance or low-scalability mode.
  3. Apply the change and restart if the game requests it.
  4. Repeat the same route or match conditions used for your baseline.
  5. Check both average FPS and whether the hitches during busy scenes have decreased.

If the mode improves smoothness but the image is too soft, increase individual settings gradually. If it makes no meaningful difference, continue with GPU assignment, drivers, background activity and thermal checks rather than assuming a new graphics card is required.

Make sure the game uses the dedicated GPU

Laptops and some desktop systems expose both an integrated graphics processor and a dedicated GPU. A game can launch on the integrated device even when a faster GPU is installed, producing unexpectedly low FPS.

Windows 11 per-app graphics preference

  1. Open Settings and select System.
  2. Choose Display, then Graphics.
  3. Add the game’s executable under the app list. Use Browse if it is not listed.
  4. Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
  5. Close and relaunch the game, then verify the result with the same baseline test.

Windows labels can vary slightly by release. The important choice is the per-app High performance GPU preference documented by Microsoft for Windows 11. If the launcher and the game use separate executables, add the actual game executable as well as any launcher entry that the title’s support instructions identify.

Check the GPU manufacturer’s control panel

Open the control panel supplied with your graphics hardware and inspect its per-program or 3D-application profile. Select the dedicated or high-performance processor for the game’s executable, apply the setting and restart the game. Do not force a global high-performance profile if you only need one title changed; a global setting can increase power draw and heat in every application.

Update graphics drivers, Windows and the game

Install the current graphics driver directly from the GPU manufacturer and keep Windows and the game updated. A driver update can correct a compatibility problem, but a newly introduced issue can also appear after an update. If the stutter began immediately after a driver change, consult the game’s current support guidance before attempting a rollback; use the manufacturer’s supported rollback process rather than installing random driver packages.

Look for conflicts instead of stacking updates

Remove or disable duplicate overlays, capture tools and hardware-monitoring hooks temporarily. A conflict can appear as microstutter even when the average FPS is high. Test with one overlay disabled at a time so you can identify the source and restore any feature you still need.

Choose an appropriate Windows power mode

For a plugged-in laptop or desktop, switch from a balanced profile to a performance-oriented Windows power mode while testing. This can prevent the processor or GPU from downshifting during a match, but it may increase power use, fan noise and heat.

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Open System, then Power & battery on Windows 11.
  3. Under Power mode, choose the performance-oriented option available on your edition.
  4. Run the same game test again and compare frame-time consistency, temperatures and noise.

If the performance profile causes thermal throttling, the higher setting can make sustained FPS worse. Keep the mode only when it improves the complete session rather than a short opening test.

Reduce background activity and overlays

Close unnecessary browsers, launchers, download clients, recording tools and synchronisation jobs before starting a match. Pause large downloads and make sure another game or launcher is not compiling, patching or verifying files in the background.

Epic’s low-FPS guidance also recommends enabling Windows Game Mode, turning off Xbox Game Bar when it is not needed, and disabling unnecessary background activity. Apply these changes one at a time; an overlay may be useful for recording or performance data, so disable only what you do not need.

Keep enough headroom for the match

Battle-royale maps stream assets as you move. A nearly full memory budget can turn a small background task into a hitch. Close applications you are not using and avoid launching new software while the game is running. If the issue appears only after a long session, note whether memory use grows over time and test a clean relaunch.

Check heat, dust and throttling

Low settings cannot overcome a processor or GPU that is reducing its clock speed to protect itself. Check whether the fans ramp up, vents are blocked, the chassis is unusually hot or FPS declines after several minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Place a laptop on a hard, unobstructed surface rather than bedding or a soft couch.
  • Clear visible dust from vents using the manufacturer’s recommended method.
  • Confirm that every fan spins normally and that no cable or filter blocks airflow.
  • Compare a cold-start match with a match after the system has been running for a while.
  • Use a trusted monitoring utility to observe CPU and GPU temperatures and clock behavior, but avoid running several monitoring overlays at once.

If clocks fall as temperatures rise, improve airflow and cooling before buying a faster component. Never disable thermal protection or use an unknown firmware modification to force higher clocks.

When an SSD or more RAM can help

Storage and memory upgrades are most relevant when an older computer hitches while loading areas, swapping assets or recovering from a busy scene. Epic’s Fortnite support states: “For users on older machines, having the game run from an SSD or providing 6GB of RAM or higher will allow the game to better fit in memory and reduce overall hitches and stutters.”

This guidance concerns fitting data in memory and reducing hitches; it does not establish a universal average-FPS increase. A dedicated GPU is not required for Fortnite, according to the same support material, but one can balance system load and provide a smoother experience.

Before buying an SSD

  • Check whether your computer accepts a 2.5-inch SATA drive, an M.2 SATA drive or an M.2 NVMe drive.
  • Confirm the slot, interface, physical length and operating-system support.
  • Leave enough free space for Windows, the game and updates.
  • Back up important files before cloning or reinstalling.

Before buying RAM

  • Check the existing module type, speed, capacity and number of slots.
  • Verify the motherboard or laptop’s maximum supported memory and whether modules are replaceable.
  • Use a matched, compatible kit where possible and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
  • Run the system’s memory test after installation and retest the game under the same conditions.

Upgrade storage or RAM when the evidence points to loading hitches, paging or insufficient capacity. Do not assume either upgrade will fix a GPU-limited frame rate.

Match the symptom to the next test

Low FPS everywhere, including quiet areas

Confirm the requirements, lower resolution or 3D resolution, select the game’s Performance Mode if available, and verify the dedicated GPU assignment. If the result remains low, update the graphics driver and inspect temperatures and clock speeds.

FPS drops only in fights or crowded locations

Lower effects, shadows, view distance and environmental detail. Close background programs and disable overlays. Compare a performance-oriented power mode while plugged in, then check for heat buildup after several minutes.

Short freezes while moving through the map

Test the game from an SSD, check available RAM and close applications that consume memory. A storage or memory bottleneck can cause hitching without changing the average FPS dramatically.

Stutter began after an update

Record the update that preceded the problem, install any subsequent game or driver fix, and follow the title’s support guidance before rolling back. Avoid changing several drivers, renderers and BIOS settings at once, because you will lose the ability to identify the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game reports the integrated GPU

Use Windows 11’s per-app Graphics setting and the GPU manufacturer’s application profile, then relaunch the game. Confirm that you selected the executable that actually renders the game rather than only its launcher.

Compare fixes by more than average FPS

Fix Frame-rate effect to look for Image or system trade-off Cost and reversibility
Lower 3D resolution or expensive effects Higher average FPS and fewer GPU-limited drops. Lower image quality. No purchase; immediately reversible.
Performance Mode Potentially smoother frame delivery on less powerful systems. Lower visual quality and title-specific renderer behavior. No purchase; reversible in the graphics menu.
Dedicated-GPU assignment Can correct severe underperformance when the integrated GPU was selected. Higher power draw and heat than integrated graphics. No purchase; reversible per app.
Driver, Windows and background cleanup May remove compatibility-related drops or microstutter. Updates can introduce new conflicts; overlays and recording features may be unavailable while disabled. Usually no purchase; reversible by restoring settings.
Power-mode change and cooling Can improve sustained performance when clocks were being limited. More fan noise, heat and electricity use. Usually no purchase; reversible.
SSD or RAM upgrade Most relevant to loading hitches, paging and asset streaming; no universal FPS gain is established. Hardware cost, installation risk and compatibility requirements. Partly reversible and dependent on the computer’s slots and limits.

A safe order for troubleshooting

  1. Record the baseline, including title, mode, resolution, settings and symptom type.
  2. Confirm current requirements and update the game, Windows and the graphics driver from official sources.
  3. Lower 3D resolution and the most expensive effects, testing one change at a time.
  4. Enable the title’s Performance or low-scalability mode if it exists.
  5. Assign the game to the dedicated or high-performance GPU in Windows and the vendor control panel.
  6. Use a performance-oriented power mode while plugged in, enable Game Mode if useful, and disable Xbox Game Bar, overlays and unnecessary background activity.
  7. Check airflow, dust, fan behavior, temperatures and throttling during a session long enough for the problem to appear.
  8. Only then assess whether an SSD or compatible RAM upgrade addresses a demonstrated storage or memory bottleneck.

Keep the baseline after each successful change. Support pages and settings can change after patches, driver releases and Windows updates, so revisit the game’s current guidance when the same symptom returns.
