TIME reviewer Matt Peckham gave the PC version 4.5 out of 5 in a review published October 17, 2016. He called it “A stupefyingly gorgeous first-person shooter,” while identifying multiplayer as the longer-lasting attraction and describing the single-player stories as limited in emotional depth. Read Peckham’s TIME review.
What did reviews praise?
Presentation and setting
Critics responded to the game’s striking presentation and its World War I setting. The result is a shooter whose identity is not just its large battles: its historical setting and visual impact are central to why reviewers found it memorable.

Large-scale multiplayer
Multiplayer is the stronger reason to choose Battlefield 1 for long-term play. EA describes battles for up to 64 players, and Peckham’s review likewise frames multiplayer as the game’s enduring draw. That appeal depends on wanting large, team-based shooter matches rather than a primarily solo experience.
What are the main criticisms?
The campaign is short on depth
The single-player campaign is made up of linked war stories, but TIME’s review cautions against expecting a long or especially profound treatment of war. Its stories have limited emotional depth compared with the scale and spectacle that define the multiplayer experience.
Rank #2
- Bring the all-out war to new fronts with Battlefield 1 Premium Pass including multiplayer maps, armies and more in four themed digital expansion packs
- 14 Battlefield 1 Battle packs containing stand-out weapon skins
- 14 unique dog tags distributed over the course of the Battlefield 1 Premium Pass period
The review strengths are not equally distributed
The positive reception does not mean every mode offers the same payoff. If your priority is a substantial, emotionally complex solo campaign, the review evidence points to a weaker fit; if you want large-scale multiplayer, critics’ praise is more directly relevant.
Is Battlefield 1 worth getting?
It is a strong choice if you want a visually striking World War I shooter and expect to spend time in multiplayer. It is a more qualified choice if you mainly want a deep, lengthy solo story. The game includes both campaign and multiplayer, so buyers can weigh those modes differently, but the critical consensus puts more emphasis on multiplayer as the durable attraction.
