Battlefield 2042 has a split review record: critics rated it mixed, while player ratings were much harsher. Those launch-era scores are useful context, but they do not by themselves describe the game on every platform today. The most important distinctions are who rated it, when they did so, and whether they played the 64-player last-generation version or the 128-player current-generation and PC version.
What do the Battlefield 2042 review scores say?
Metacritic’s platform page reports a 68/100 Metascore from 74 critic reviews, labeled “Mixed or Average.” Its user score is 2.4/10 from 5,562 user ratings, labeled “Generally Unfavorable” (Metacritic, accessed 2026). These are separate aggregates from different groups and rating processes; they should not be averaged into a single verdict.
The critic total includes 29 positive, 34 mixed, and 11 negative reviews. Among user ratings, Metacritic reports 14% positive, 9% mixed, and 78% negative; percentages can vary slightly from 100% because of rounding. The substantial gap shows that critics and users received the game very differently, but it does not explain every player’s experience.
Individual outlet scores can also differ from the aggregate. GameSpot lists Battlefield 2042 at 7/10, with the label “Good.” That is one outlet’s assessment, not a replacement for the broader critic score.

Metacritic’s review listings include launch-period critics who praised aspects such as the sandbox and maps, as well as reviewers who criticized technical issues, missing series features, or gameplay problems. Read those as specific reviewers’ judgments rather than a unanimous explanation for the scores.
Do the reviews describe the game as it plays today?
Not necessarily. A 2021 launch review records a judgment of the game at that time; it cannot automatically be treated as a review of every later build. Conversely, the existence of later updates does not prove that all launch criticisms were resolved or that the current experience is uniformly better.

One Metacritic user review dated September 6, 2025 calls the game “a nearly completely different game than it was at launch.” That is an individual player’s account, not a verified measure of how much the game changed or a consensus about its current quality.
EA’s game page listed update 9.2.1 dated September 8, 2025. The available update listing does not establish whether a later update has appeared, so it is not enough to call 9.2.1 the final update or to describe the game as no longer updated.

Which platform version are reviews about?
Player count and map scale differ by platform, which can materially affect what a review describes. EA says PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S support 128-player matches and massive-scale maps; PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are capped at 64 players and use reduced map sizes.
| Platform | Match size and map scale | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S | Up to 128 players; massive-scale maps, according to EA | These versions offer the larger-scale format. |
| PlayStation 4, Xbox One | Up to 64 players; reduced map sizes, according to EA | Do not assume a review of the 128-player version applies directly. |
When comparing reviews, check the platform and review date rather than treating “Battlefield 2042” as one identical experience across hardware and time.

What does the game offer, and what does that tell you?
EA’s store description lists more than 17 maps, including Portal environments, modes such as Conquest and Breakthrough, and four Specialist classes: Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon. EA describes the Specialists as divided into those four classes, each with its own battlefield strengths. This is the publisher’s description of the offering, not independent proof of how balanced or enjoyable it is in play.
The breadth may appeal if you want large-scale multiplayer with several modes and class roles. It is less useful as a buying signal if what you need is evidence that a particular mode, map, or play style is currently well populated or well balanced; the cited store description does not establish those things.

What should you check before buying?
- Choose the version that matches your hardware. The last-generation console versions have smaller player counts and reduced map sizes compared with PC and current-generation consoles.
- Check the current edition listing. EA’s purchase page lists Standard and Elite editions. The Elite Edition is described as including the base game, Season 1–4 Specialists, weapons and vehicles, and the “Lost World” Epic Cosmetic Bundle. Edition contents and availability can change, so verify the storefront listing before purchase.
- Account for online access requirements. EA states that the digital license requires an internet connection and an EA account. It also warns that certain features or access may be retired after 30 days’ notice posted on its service-updates page.
- Use recent, platform-specific player impressions for current fit. Aggregates summarize earlier ratings and cannot confirm present matchmaking, server conditions, or whether the current build suits your preferred mode.
EA links to Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic storefronts. PlayStation lists versions for PS4 and PS5 and gives the release date as November 19, 2021. Current prices and availability are not established here.
Verdict: is Battlefield 2042 worth playing or buying?
The review record supports a cautious, preference-dependent answer rather than a universal yes or no. Critics were mixed, and user ratings were strongly negative; neither figure alone settles whether the game will suit you now. If you are interested in large-scale multiplayer and can evaluate the version for your platform, treat the aggregates as a warning to check recent, platform-specific impressions before spending money. If you want a review score that reflects the exact current build and conditions, the cited ratings do not provide that guarantee.
