Battlefield 2042 Update 8.8.0 requires Secure Boot on supported PC hardware. That does not mean every PC player must change BIOS settings: systems that do not support Secure Boot are treated differently, while players whose PCs already report Secure Boot as enabled need to do nothing.

Before changing firmware settings, check Windows for UEFI, GPT, and TPM 2.0 compatibility. Switching a Legacy/MBR installation directly to UEFI can prevent Windows from booting.

For Battlefield’s Secure Boot requirement, Outbyte PC Repair can optionally check Windows security settings and identify missing updates.

What changed in Battlefield 2042 Update 8.8?

EA’s Update 8.8.0 announcement says Battlefield 2042 now requires Secure Boot on PC hardware that supports the feature. The announcement, dated May 27, presents the change as part of EA’s effort to strengthen anti-cheat protection.

The important qualification is supported hardware. “EA now requires Secure Boot for every Battlefield 2042 player” is too broad. Console players do not need to change BIOS settings, and an older or otherwise incompatible PC may report that Secure Boot is unsupported.

Secure Boot is unrelated to graphics quality, frame rate, or ordinary game performance. It is a firmware security feature used as one part of EA’s anti-cheat and anti-tamper strategy.

Why does Secure Boot matter to anti-cheat?

Secure Boot is a UEFI feature that permits trusted, digitally signed software to load during the computer’s boot process. This can make it harder for malware or cheat-related components to load before Windows and hide from security tools.

That does not make Secure Boot an anti-cheat scanner, and it does not guarantee a cheat-free game. It cannot inspect every cheat or replace anti-cheat software. Its role is to help establish trust in the boot environment, while EA’s anti-cheat technology operates as another layer.

EA says kernel-mode protection is important for highly competitive games with extensive online play, including Battlefield 2042. Secure Boot supports that broader design by making some low-level tampering techniques more difficult. EA’s security rationale should not be read as independent proof that Secure Boot produces a quantified or universally “superior” anti-cheat result.

Which anti-cheat does Battlefield 2042 use?

EA originally described Battlefield 2042’s system as EA anticheat when the game moved to the technology in October 2023. EA’s current support documentation calls the platform EA Javelin Anticheat.

That naming change does not mean Javelin was newly introduced with Update 8.8. The anti-cheat transition came earlier; the later update added Secure Boot as an explicit requirement for supported Battlefield 2042 PCs.

EA says Javelin is installed automatically for games that use it and requires Windows 10 version 10.0.19041 or newer. Its installation and troubleshooting guidance is available on EA’s Javelin Anticheat support page.

Check Secure Boot before changing BIOS settings

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type msinfo32 and press Enter.
  3. In System Summary, find BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.

Record the values before changing anything in firmware. The usual results are:

Windows result Meaning What to do
BIOS Mode: UEFI
Secure Boot State: On
Secure Boot is already active. No BIOS change should be necessary for this requirement.
BIOS Mode: UEFI
Secure Boot State: Off
The platform likely supports Secure Boot, but it is disabled. Check the prerequisites, then enable it in firmware.
BIOS Mode: Legacy Windows is booting through Legacy BIOS or CSM mode. Do not simply switch to UEFI. Check the disk layout and recovery options first.
Secure Boot State: Unsupported The hardware, firmware, or current configuration may not support the feature. Check the computer or motherboard manual before making changes.

EA documents the msinfo32 check in its Secure Boot troubleshooting guide.

Confirm UEFI, GPT, TPM 2.0, and firmware support

Before enabling Secure Boot, verify these conditions:

  • UEFI: The system must boot in UEFI mode rather than Legacy BIOS or CSM mode.
  • GPT: The Windows system disk generally needs the GUID Partition Table format rather than MBR.
  • TPM 2.0: EA’s current guidance lists TPM 2.0 among the prerequisites to check.
  • Compatible firmware: The motherboard or laptop must support Secure Boot.
  • Recovery access: Make sure important files are backed up and that you can retrieve a BitLocker recovery key if disk encryption is enabled.

TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are separate features. A PC can have TPM 2.0 while still failing the requirement because Windows boots in Legacy mode.

Users with Linux, dual-boot configurations, custom bootloaders, GPU passthrough, unusual encryption arrangements, or older Windows installations should check compatibility with the relevant manufacturer or operating-system documentation before changing firmware.

How to enable Secure Boot safely

If msinfo32 already shows BIOS Mode: UEFI, the change is usually straightforward:

  • Power supply: 650W (80plus bronze) certified for energy efficiency and stable performance
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System → Recovery.
  3. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  4. Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → UEFI Firmware Settings → Restart.
  5. In the firmware interface, open the Boot, Security, or similarly named section.
  6. Set Secure Boot to Enabled.
  7. If offered, set the operating-system type to Windows UEFI mode.
  8. If the firmware says Secure Boot keys are missing, use the manufacturer’s option to restore or install the factory/default keys.
  9. Save the changes and restart Windows.
  10. Run msinfo32 again. Confirm BIOS Mode: UEFI and Secure Boot State: On.
  11. Launch Battlefield 2042.

Firmware menus vary significantly between motherboard and laptop manufacturers. Some systems require a BIOS administrator password before Secure Boot can be changed. Do not select options such as “clear keys” unless you understand the consequence; restoring factory keys is the relevant option on systems that require them.

Do not switch Legacy/MBR systems blindly

If Windows reports BIOS Mode: Legacy, do not simply disable Legacy/CSM and enable UEFI before checking the system disk. Windows installed on an MBR disk may fail to boot after that change.

Back up important files first. Determine whether the Windows disk uses MBR or GPT, then consult Microsoft’s conversion guidance or the computer and motherboard manufacturer. A conversion or boot-configuration change may be required before Secure Boot can be enabled.

What if Secure Boot is unsupported or greyed out?

“Unsupported”

Possible causes include an older motherboard, firmware without Secure Boot support, a configuration that hides the feature, missing keys, or manufacturer-specific restrictions. Check the device manual and specification sheet. If the platform genuinely lacks Secure Boot support, a BIOS toggle cannot add it.

The option is greyed out

Common causes include Legacy/CSM mode, missing default Secure Boot keys, or a BIOS administrator-password requirement. Some firmware exposes Secure Boot only after CSM is disabled; do not make that change on an MBR installation without first addressing its boot configuration.

Windows will not boot after the change

  1. Return to firmware setup.
  2. Restore the previous boot mode if you changed it.
  3. Re-enable the original CSM/Legacy setting only if necessary to restore the prior configuration.
  4. If Windows still does not start, use Windows recovery tools.
  5. Restore a backup or contact the device manufacturer if the boot configuration is unclear.

Firmware layouts differ, so reverting one setting is not guaranteed to recover every installation.

If Battlefield 2042 still shows the Secure Boot error

First run msinfo32 again and confirm that Secure Boot State is exactly On and BIOS Mode remains UEFI. Then:

  • Fully restart Windows rather than resuming from sleep.
  • Install available Windows, EA app, and Battlefield 2042 updates.
  • Confirm the system meets EA Javelin Anticheat’s Windows baseline of version 10.0.19041 or newer.
  • Check that Javelin Anticheat is installed correctly and repair or reinstall it using EA’s current support instructions.
  • Review security software or other low-level utilities that could interfere with anti-cheat initialization.

Secure Boot being enabled does not guarantee that every anti-cheat launch problem is resolved; Javelin installation or another compatibility issue may remain.

Does Secure Boot improve security outside Battlefield 2042?

Yes. Secure Boot helps prevent unauthorized or malicious boot software from loading before Windows, so it is a general platform-security feature rather than a Battlefield-only switch. It does not replace antivirus protection, Windows updates, account security, or careful software practices.

There are trade-offs. Secure Boot can complicate some Linux, multiboot, custom-bootloader, older operating-system, or specialized hardware configurations. It also makes access to an online game dependent on firmware and storage configuration. Those compatibility costs are separate from the privacy, stability, and trust questions associated with kernel-mode anti-cheat.

The practical conclusion is narrow: on a compatible Windows gaming PC, Secure Boot is a reasonable security layer and is now part of Battlefield 2042’s supported-PC launch requirements. It is not proof that the game is cheat-proof, nor a reason to change firmware blindly.
