No—Battlefield 4 does not support two-player split-screen multiplayer on one console and television. You can play its single-player campaign alone, or use networked multiplayer with separate systems and screens, but the game has no couch co-op mode that puts two players in the same match on one display.
What “local play” means in Battlefield 4
“Local play” can describe several different arrangements, so the answer depends on what you want to do. Battlefield 4 includes a solo campaign and online multiplayer, but those are separate features. The game does not provide a same-console, same-screen split-screen option for two people.

The clearest official answer comes from an EA staff reply in the EA Forums: “Battlefield 4 unfortunately does not support split screen in multiplayer mode. So you could either take turns or everyone would have to play on their own console and screen.” Read the EA staff response.

EA describes Battlefield 4 as having a single-player campaign alongside its multiplayer offering. “Single-player” means one player controls the game; it does not mean that a second person can join locally. There is no campaign split-screen, local two-player campaign or same-device co-op mode documented for Battlefield 4.

This distinction matters when a store page or box lists both “single-player” and “multiplayer.” Those labels identify different components. Starting the campaign will not reveal a second-player prompt, and connecting a second controller does not create a local multiplayer lobby.
The campaign may be the right choice if one person wants to play while another watches or takes a turn. It is not a solution for simultaneous couch gaming. The available evidence also does not establish one universal offline rule for every platform, edition and current installation, so do not assume that every campaign setup works without an internet connection.
How Battlefield 4 multiplayer is accessed
Battlefield 4’s multiplayer documentation describes network-based ways to enter a match rather than a local split-screen menu. The PC manual lists three routes:

- Server browser: browse available servers and choose one using the listed settings.
- Join a friend: enter a match where a friend is already playing.
These instructions are for players using separate systems and screens. They do not describe a local network or same-console mode, and the manual should not be read as evidence that split-screen exists. You can consult the Battlefield 4 PC manual for the documented multiplayer entry points.

For a group playing together, each participant therefore needs their own supported copy or account setup, a compatible platform and access to the relevant online service. Whether a particular console generation, storefront listing or account requirement is still available can vary, so verify the edition before buying or configuring a session.
Which multiplayer modes are available?
EA’s PlayStation 4 manual names seven multiplayer modes. The list shows the breadth of Battlefield 4’s networked offering, but none of these modes adds a local split-screen feature.

The EA PS4 manual is the source for this seven-mode list. It documents the modes themselves, not an additional local-play setting. If you are choosing a mode for a group, plan on one player per system rather than two players sharing one television.

Platforms and edition checks
EA’s product page lists Battlefield 4 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox platforms, with storefront entries that can include the EA app and Steam. Availability, backward compatibility, downloadable content and online-service access can differ by edition and region. Check the exact listing for the platform you own before assuming that a purchase will work.

A platform-compatible copy gives you access only to the features included in that edition. It cannot add split-screen support that the game itself does not have. In particular, buying a PS4 or Xbox copy will not unlock a hidden couch multiplayer mode, and installing the PC version will not create a second local display.
Use EA’s Battlefield 4 product page to confirm the current platform information and system details. If you are purchasing a used disc or a code from a third-party listing, match the platform, region and edition carefully; “multiplayer included” refers to the game’s networked component, not split-screen play.
What to do if you want couch multiplayer
If two people are in the same room, there are only two practical ways to use Battlefield 4 together:

One person plays the campaign or a match, then hands over the controller. This is the workaround EA’s staff response explicitly mentions.
- Use separate systems and screens. Each player runs the game on their own compatible console or PC and joins the same networked session, server or friend’s game.
Do not spend time searching the options menus for a hidden “local multiplayer” toggle. The absence is a game-design limitation, not a setting that needs to be enabled. Adding a second controller, creating another console profile or changing the display settings cannot produce a second viewpoint.

Planning a same-room online session
- Confirm that every player has a compatible platform and the same general edition of the game.
- Install updates and sign in to the platform and EA account services required by that edition.
- Ensure each player has a separate screen and controller or keyboard-and-mouse setup.
- Have one player start a match through Quick Match or the server browser, or enter a game already running.
- Use the game’s join-friend or server options on the other systems.
The exact account, subscription and network requirements can change with platform policies and current service status. Treat the PC manual’s Quick Match, server-browser and join-friend paths as the documented game flow, then check your platform’s current requirements if a player cannot connect.

“It has multiplayer, so why can’t two controllers join?”
In Battlefield 4, “multiplayer” refers to players meeting through the networked game service. It does not imply that one console renders multiple player views. Many shooters separate online multiplayer from split-screen support, and Battlefield 4 is one of them.
“Can the second player join the campaign?”
No local campaign co-op is documented. The campaign is the single-player portion, so a second controller does not add a cooperative character.
“Can two people play on one TV by connecting two consoles?”
Two consoles can let two people play in the same room if each system has its own display and the players connect through networked multiplayer. Two consoles feeding one television are not a Battlefield 4 split-screen feature; you would need a separate display arrangement and compatible equipment.

“Does the list of seven modes prove local play exists?”
No. The PS4 manual’s seven-mode list identifies multiplayer formats. It does not state that any mode supports local split-screen, and the EA staff response specifically rules out split-screen multiplayer.
“Is the campaign definitely playable offline?”
That depends on the platform, edition, account state and current installation requirements. EA’s store language includes internet and account requirements in its PC licensing and online-feature information, but the available documentation does not establish one offline rule for every version. Check the requirements for your exact release instead of assuming that the single-player label guarantees offline access.
Bottom line for a purchase or game night
Choose Battlefield 4 for its solo campaign or its networked team modes, not for two-player couch co-op. A single console and screen supports one active player at a time; simultaneous multiplayer requires separate systems and screens. That limitation applies regardless of whether you select Conquest, Rush, Team Death Match or another mode listed in the manuals.
