1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA small user.cfg file may reduce CPU spikes and improve frame-time consistency in Battlefield 6 on some PCs. It is a reversible community workaround, not an EA-supported fix: results vary by processor, game build, frame-rate cap and background workload. Use values that match your CPU, then compare the same scenario with and without the file.
Important: the five-line example below is for an 8-core/16-thread processor. Do not copy its numbers to a different CPU.
The five-line User.cfg
For a conventional 8-core/16-thread CPU, start with this minimal configuration:
Thread.ProcessorCount 8
Thread.MaxProcessorCount 8
Thread.MinFreeProcessorCount 0
Thread.JobThreadPriority 0
GstRender.Thread.MaxProcessorCount 16
These commands appear intended to constrain Battlefield’s general and rendering worker-thread pools. Community reports associate the tweak with lower CPU utilization, fewer stutters, less slow-motion behavior and steadier frame times on some systems, while other players report no change, worse 1% lows or launch problems. No EA or DICE documentation establishes it as a universal fix. See the mixed reports in the EA technical-issues thread and its counter reports.

Match the numbers to your CPU
Use physical cores for the first two settings and logical processors (threads) for the rendering limit. Check your processor specification or Windows Task Manager rather than copying an overlay’s generic “cores” label.
| CPU topology | Thread.ProcessorCount |
Thread.MaxProcessorCount |
GstRender.Thread.MaxProcessorCount |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 physical / 8 logical | 4 | 4 | 8 |
| 6 physical / 12 logical | 6 | 6 | 12 |
| 8 physical / 16 logical | 8 | 8 | 16 |
| 12 physical / 24 logical | 12 | 12 | 24 |
Keep Thread.MinFreeProcessorCount 0 and Thread.JobThreadPriority 0 in the basic template unless you are deliberately testing another documented configuration. Large “ultimate” packs combine unrelated or possibly ineffective commands, making a regression harder to diagnose; community discussion of expanded files also acknowledges that some entries may be placebo (example discussion).

Install the file beside the game executable
- Open Steam, the EA app or Epic Games and choose the option to browse or open Battlefield 6’s local files.
- Find the installation folder containing the Battlefield 6 executable. Do not use the Documents settings folder.
- Open Notepad, paste the five lines with values matching your CPU, then choose File → Save As.
- Set Save as type to All files, name the file exactly
user.cfg, and save it in the executable’s folder. - In File Explorer, enable View → Show → File name extensions. Confirm the name is
user.cfg, notuser.cfg.txt. - If Windows refuses to write there, save the file elsewhere and copy it into the folder, accepting the administrator prompt only when Windows asks.
Installation paths differ between Steam, the EA app and Epic Games. Community instructions consistently point to the folder containing the executable, not one universal hard-coded directory (installation example; filename and launcher reports).
Test it as an A/B change
Restart Battlefield 6 after creating or removing the file. Use the same map, mode, resolution, graphics preset and frame-rate cap for both runs; close unnecessary background applications. Record:

- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
- average FPS and 1% lows;
- the frame-time graph;
- CPU and GPU utilization;
- CPU package temperature and any power or thermal throttling;
- stutter, input delay, audio tearing or slow-motion symptoms.
The game performance overlay, Windows Task Manager, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner or another trusted monitor can show these metrics. A lower CPU percentage alone does not prove success: reports include cases where utilization fell while FPS or 1% lows became worse (example). Judge the change by smoother frame delivery and better playability.

Rollback
- Exit the game.
- Rename
user.cfgtouser.cfg.backup, or delete it. - Launch Battlefield 6 and repeat the same comparison.
- If it will not launch, use Steam’s Verify Integrity, EA app’s Repair, or Epic’s Verify function, then reboot.
Players have reported ignored files, regressions and launch issues, so keep rollback instructions available (ignored-file reports; rollback-related reports).

Common causes of an ignored file
- The filename is really
user.cfg.txt. - The file is in Documents or another folder rather than beside the executable.
- The current game build does not support, honors or may override the commands.
- A launcher update changed the installation or loading behavior.
Use the minimal five-line file, test one change at a time, and remove it if measurements show no benefit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Is 90–100% CPU usage automatically bad?
No. An uncapped multiplayer game can legitimately use nearly all available CPU time. High utilization matters when it comes with hitching, slow-motion gameplay, input delay, audio tearing, unstable frame times, unsafe temperatures, low GPU utilization or worsening performance when the frame rate is uncapped. Community reports describe those combinations, including low GPU use, but they are user observations rather than an EA diagnosis (beta-era report).

Hybrid Intel CPUs need extra caution
Performance and efficiency cores make “14 cores/20 threads,” for example, unlike a conventional all-identical-core CPU. Community discussions describe unexpected E-core scheduling and attempts to restrict Battlefield to P-cores, but they do not establish one correct value for every hybrid model (discussion).
Do not disable E-cores, change BIOS settings or force process affinity as a first step. Test the unmodified game, the basic file, a sensible frame-rate cap and a clean background-process state first. Treat P-core-only or affinity software experiments as separate advanced tests with their own rollback plan.
Check these basics before blaming the CPU
- Update Battlefield 6 and install current graphics drivers.
- Check that the CPU is not overheating or throttling.
- Use Task Manager to find browser tabs, recording tools, RGB utilities, overlays, antivirus scans or other CPU-heavy processes.
- Apply a frame-rate cap if the game is rendering as many frames as possible.
- Check for unstable overclock, undervolt, XMP/EXPO or memory settings.
- Verify the installation drive is healthy and that the PC meets EA’s requirements.
EA lists Windows 10, a Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600, 16 GB RAM and an RTX 2060, RX 5600 XT 6 GB or Arc A380 as minimum specifications. Its recommended tier lists Windows 11, a Core i7-10700 or Ryzen 7 3700X, 16 GB RAM and an RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT or Arc B580; Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, HVCI and VBS-related requirements or notes also apply. Check the official FAQ and official specification page for current details.
If the game is smooth, temperatures are safe and frame times are stable, reducing the displayed CPU percentage is not itself a reason to change anything. If the processor remains the bottleneck after these checks, a hardware upgrade may be a longer-term solution, but the appropriate part depends on your motherboard, memory, resolution, frame-rate target and budget.

The User.cfg approach is free, quick and reversible. It may help a conventional CPU whose automatic worker-thread choice produces stutter, but it can also be ignored, become ineffective after an update or reduce performance. Retest after major Battlefield 6 updates, and remove the file whenever the unmodified game performs better. EA’s official documentation lists requirements and PC features; it does not endorse this community configuration as a supported fix.
