They do not always lock you to one weapon category. In most modes, EA says weapon rules are open, so you can pair a class’s team role with a weapon type you prefer; the playlist determines whether that flexibility applies.
How classes and loadouts fit together
Electronic Arts defines a loadout as “a customizable set of Weapons, Gadgets, a Grenade and a Training Path, all focused around one of the four classes.” Each class has its own loadouts, two gadget slots, a throwable, a melee weapon, class-specific training paths, a signature trait, and a signature gadget that remains usable regardless of the selected loadout. EA’s Loadout Creation and Weapon Classes guide is marked recently updated for Season 4.
That means class choice is about more than the weapon in your hands. It determines the class-specific utility and role you can contribute, while the rest of the loadout lets you tailor how you carry out that role.
What you can customize
- Weapons: Choose a base weapon and configure its attachments. Many weapons also have camos and charms.
- Weapon Packages: These are preconfigured versions of base weapons with themed attachments for a combat scenario. You can customize a package from its base form.
- Gadgets and throwable: Select two gadget slots and a grenade or other throwable for the loadout. Your class’s signature gadget is available regardless of that loadout choice.
- Training Path: Choose one of the class’s training options. EA’s guide describes two paths per class: one default and one unlocked by completing a Class Assignment.
- Melee weapon and appearance items: Loadouts include a melee weapon, and many weapons support cosmetic camos and charms.
EA says developer-designed default attachment setups are intended to offer a balanced version of each weapon’s experience. Attachment effects and weapon balance can change with updates, so a package or default setup is a starting point rather than a permanent best choice.

What each Battlefield 6 class contributes
Choose a class by the job you want to do for your squad—pressing an objective, countering vehicles, sustaining teammates, or gathering information. The signature gadgets below are listed by EA; the class roles reflect EA’s class descriptions.
| Class | Main squad contribution | Signature gadget | Best fit if you want to… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assault | Frontline pressure, enhanced mobility, and the potential for an extra primary weapon. | Adrenaline Injector | Break defenses and push into objectives. |
| Engineer | Vehicle denial with rockets and mines; the only class EA identifies as able to repair friendly vehicles, equipment, and weapon placements. | Repair Tool | Hunt enemy vehicles or keep friendly hardware operational. |
| Support | Healing, revives, supplies, deployable cover, and defenses. EA describes Support as the master of the LMG. | Supply Bag | Keep teammates supplied and in the fight. |
| Recon | Scouting, spotting, stealth, and ranged attacks, including the use of sniper rifles. | Motion Sensor | Reveal threats and contribute from range. |
For fuller class descriptions, see EA’s Battlefield 6 Classes page.
Can every class use any weapon?
Not in every playlist. EA distinguishes open-weapon modes, where any class can equip any weapon type, from closed-weapon modes, where each class is limited to its associated signature weapon category. According to EA Help’s Battlefield 6 class guide, most modes use open weapons by default; players who prefer class-specific weapons can choose playlists using closed weapons.

- All-out war, fast-paced close-quarters combat, tactical destruction – Welcome to the definitive Battlefield experience
- THE NEW STANDARD OF FPS COMBAT: With overhauled gunplay and tactical movement, from crouch sprint to drag and revive, every shot and movement is more instinctual and precise
- MORE WAYS TO BATTLE: Victory, however you envision it; Seize glory in iconic, large-scale modes including Conquest, Breakthrough, and Rush; Fight in iconic locations all over the world including Cairo, Brooklyn, Gibraltar and more
In practice, check the playlist rules before building around a weapon-category assumption. In an open-weapon mode, you can keep the class utility you want and choose a different weapon type. In a closed-weapon mode, that weapon choice follows the class’s category rules.
Training Paths and Field Specs are distinct progression systems
EA’s guides describe two class-progression systems using different terms, so it is safest not to treat them as interchangeable:
- Training Paths: The loadout guide presents these as customizable class choices, with two per class—one default and one earned by completing a Class Assignment.
- Field Specs: EA Help describes these as class specializations earned through team progression and score XP. Each class has two choices; their abilities progress during a round and reset at the start of the next round.
Because those descriptions do not establish that the systems share unlock rules, use the current in-game labels and unlock information when selecting or tracking either one.

Which class should you choose?
Start with the contribution your squad needs, then choose a weapon and gadgets that support it. If you are unsure, decide whether you would rather lead an attack, deal with vehicles, keep allies active, or provide reconnaissance.
- Choose Assault when you want to take ground and push into defended objectives.
- Choose Engineer when vehicles are the problem—or when friendly vehicles and equipment need repair.
- Choose Support when your priority is reviving, healing, supplying, and protecting teammates.
- Choose Recon when you prefer spotting and scouting threats or fighting at range.
Then account for the playlist’s weapon rules. Open weapons let you separate the class role from the weapon category; closed weapons make that category part of the class choice.

These details are time-sensitive because Battlefield 6 is a live game and its balance changes frequently. Update 1.4.3.0 introduced Season 4: Tidal Strike on September 15, 2026. Its Deep Six Collection Event was scheduled to run through October 12, 2026, with weapon packages, customization rewards, and a Diver’s Knife. The update also notes changes to reticle and optics presentation, including attachment presentation updates. See EA’s Update 1.4.3.0 notes for the dated details.
EA’s Season 5 and Beyond preview is forward-looking and explicitly says proposed features may change, be delayed, or be removed. It discusses proposed 2027 adjustments, including REDSEC class and training-path changes such as removing the Drone Specialist and Hazmat Breacher alternate training paths. Those preview items are not current core Battlefield 6 multiplayer rules.
