Electronic Arts confirmed Vince Zampella’s death on December 22, 2025, after he was one of two people killed the previous day in a crash on Angeles Crest Highway in Los Angeles County. Authorities’ preliminary account said the car left the road for unknown reasons; a medical-examiner finding reported in April 2026 described his fatal injuries but did not explain why the car left the roadway.

According to the California Highway Patrol account quoted by the Los Angeles Times, a southbound car veered off the roadway, struck a concrete barrier and caught fire. The driver was trapped and the passenger was ejected; both died. The early reports do not establish whether Zampella was the driver or passenger.
What is known about the crash and cause of death?
The preliminary account did not determine why the car left the road
The CHP account said that “for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and became fully engulfed.” That describes the preliminary sequence of events, not an established cause of the crash. The available reporting does not provide a definitive reconstruction or assign fault.

The later medical finding concerned fatal injuries, not crash causation
In an April 22, 2026 follow-up, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s cause-of-death finding for Zampella listed thermal injuries and smoke inhalation, with blunt trauma. This later medical finding addresses the injuries that caused his death; it does not say why the vehicle left the roadway.
Why was Vince Zampella called the Battlefield head?
Zampella had a leading role in the franchise at the time of his death. The Los Angeles Times reported that he oversaw Battlefield for Ripple Effect Studios, the Los Angeles studio formerly known as DICE LA, until his death. He also led Respawn Entertainment.

The Associated Press reported in its December 22, 2025 coverage that the Call of Duty franchise had sold more than 500 million games worldwide. That is a franchise-wide sales figure, not a measure of Zampella’s personal sales or an independently audited count.
