Why were Battlefield 6 players review-bombing REDSEC if it wasn’t simply because the mode was bad? The October 2025 backlash was mixed: some players criticized REDSEC itself, but a major flashpoint was how its challenges and progression connected to the paid Battlefield 6 experience. Players also argued over what REDSEC offered compared with the main game’s multiplayer.
What were players actually objecting to?
REDSEC launched alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1 in October 2025 as a free-to-play battle royale, with an elimination-gauntlet mode. Contemporary coverage described a backlash aimed not only at the battle royale’s merits, but also at its place in the broader Battlefield 6 ecosystem. That distinction matters: the controversy was not evidence that every negative reviewer disliked REDSEC for the same reason—or that every complaint was unrelated to its gameplay. PCGamesN’s launch coverage and Windows Central’s reporting describe several strands of criticism.
Why did progression become a flashpoint?
Some Season 1 weekly challenges and battle-pass progression were linked to REDSEC. Battlefield 6 players who had bought the game for its conventional multiplayer objected to feeling pushed toward a different genre to make progress. One review reproduced by Windows Central put the frustration plainly: “This is not why I bought Battlefield 6.” Another asked, “Why is the battle pass I got for Battlefield 6 trying to push me towards playing this crud?” These are individual Steam reviews, not survey responses or proof that all players felt the same way. Windows Central attributed the first quote to reviewer Doombox.
There is an important difference between an incentive and a requirement. PCGamesN described REDSEC-linked challenges as extras rather than tasks every player had to complete. Players could still experience them as pressure if they wanted to pursue the progression path or rewards they cared about. So the complaint was that the paid game’s progression seemed to steer some players into REDSEC—not that every Battlefield 6 owner was forced to play it. PCGamesN covered that distinction.

Why did some players compare REDSEC favorably with the main multiplayer?
Some criticism was about feature allocation rather than a claim that REDSEC was poor. Reporting described players praising its larger map, points of interest, flanking routes, and destruction, then asking why the paid game’s conventional multiplayer did not offer more of those qualities. In that argument, REDSEC’s strengths made the contrast with Battlefield 6’s smaller maps and more limited destruction feel sharper. PCGamesN and Multiplayer.it reported this comparison.
What complaints were about REDSEC itself?
Not all the backlash was about Battlefield 6’s shared progression or feature choices. Reporting also recorded complaints about REDSEC’s microtransactions, the lack of a solo queue, and whether its battle-royale design felt too familiar. Windows Central and some of the player reviews it cited compared REDSEC to Call of Duty: Warzone; that is a player opinion about originality, not an established finding that the games are identical. Windows Central and PCGamesN covered these criticisms.

How large was the review backlash?
Launch-period figures give a dated snapshot, not a current verdict. On October 29, 2025, PCGamesN reported that REDSEC had a 35%-positive snapshot from more than 2,300 responses. Multiplayer.it reported a 44% Steam rating at publication on October 30, 2025. The difference reflects separate snapshots, and neither number should be read as a current rating. PCGamesN and Multiplayer.it published those figures.
PC Gamer also reported an influx of more than 5,000 negative reviews “since yesterday” during the Season 1 controversy. That figure concerned Battlefield 6’s Steam rating amid complaints about Season 1 changes, including battle-pass advertisements, the Blackwell Fields map, and weekly challenges tied to battle royale. It was not a verified count of REDSEC-only reviews, nor a current total. PC Gamer’s report framed it as a launch-period surge.

These reports document player posts and contemporary discussion, not a representative survey of reviewers. They show that progression and ecosystem decisions were prominent causes of frustration, alongside complaints about REDSEC’s own design; they do not establish what share of all negative reviewers held each view.
What has changed since the 2025 backlash?
In an October 1, 2026 update, EA said that feedback through Battlefield Labs and live play had informed ongoing work across Battlefield 6 and REDSEC. Its Season 5 preview discussed planned gameplay and vehicle changes for both games, as well as additional battle-royale-specific changes. EA cautioned that the proposals could be adjusted, delayed, or removed after testing and player feedback. That is current development context, not evidence that every complaint from 2025 has been resolved. EA’s Season 5 preview says, “As always, everything discussed here is subject to change.”
