EA announced Battlefield Labs on February 3, 2025, saying its first phase would begin “in the coming weeks” with invitations for a few thousand players in Europe and North America. That was the original rollout, not a current cap or start date: EA later described Labs tests in 2026, including a session inside the live game. Signing up through EA Playtesting can put you in consideration, but it does not guarantee an invitation.
What Battlefield Labs is—and what “starts this month” meant
Battlefield Labs is EA’s community playtesting program for testing Battlefield experiences and gathering player feedback. In its February 3, 2025 announcement, EA described the game as being in pre-alpha and said the first phase was expected to start in the coming weeks. The headline’s “this month” referred to that 2025 announcement; it should not be read as a current launch notice.

EA has not established the exact date of the first play session in the official updates cited here. Its May 2025 update said four initial sessions had taken place, without giving the date of the first one. In that update, EA said the sessions covered fundamentals including gunplay, movement and destruction, and reported thousands of hours of gameplay, hundreds of thousands of player spawns and more than a million environmental objects destroyed. How to join Battlefield Labs
- Go to the Electronic Arts Playtesting Portal and sign up with an EA Account.
- Link your EA Account to the platform account you use to play.
- Watch for an invitation email from [email protected] if EA Playtesting selects you.
EA Playtesting manages selection. Registration is an expression of interest, not a reservation or guarantee of access. EA’s help page describes the initial stage as limited to a few thousand invitees; that figure applies to the original phase, and EA has not confirmed it as a current participant cap. EA’s Battlefield Labs help page explains the signup route.

Who could participate in the original phase?
EA’s original announcement and FAQ described an initial invitation pool in Europe and North America, with a few thousand players selected for the first stage. These are historical details, not a guarantee of present-day regional availability or a statement of how many people can participate in future sessions.
The FAQ listed PC access through the EA app, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It also named PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass Core requirements for console play and provided PC specifications. Those were the FAQ-era requirements; check EA’s current instructions for any particular session rather than assuming those details still apply. The official pages do not say that buying a Battlefield game or upgrading hardware secures selection.

What participants should expect
Unfinished builds and scheduled sessions
EA warned that Labs content was work in progress and could include rough edges, bugs and crashes. Its original FAQ said sessions would not follow a rigid cadence: EA planned builds for repeated testing every few weeks, with schedules shared directly with participants. The initial scope was invite-only, rather than an open public test anyone could join.
Confidentiality
EA’s original FAQ said invitees had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Participants should follow the terms they receive and avoid sharing protected test material or session details publicly.

How the program changed after the first phase
Battlefield Labs did not end with its original pre-launch tests. EA’s February 2026 update described continued testing of combat feel, consistency and balance, including work on the Contaminated map and a gameplay feature. See EA’s February 2026 update.
EA also reported that a limited-time Battle Royale Solos test ran in Battlefield Labs within the live game from March 6 through March 9, 2026. The team sought feedback on pacing, class dynamics, vehicles and the overall match feel. This illustrates that Labs could support testing in the live game as well as the original pre-launch development work; it does not mean every player had access. Read EA’s April 2026 update.

What the original announcement said
Vince Zampella, then identified by EA as Head of Respawn and Group GM for EA Studios Organization, said the pre-alpha stage was the time to test experiences the teams had built and that Battlefield Labs would help them find the game’s potential. The announcement framed participation as a way to inform development, not as early access to a finished game. Read EA’s February 3, 2025 announcement.
