Battlefield REDSEC launched on October 28, 2025, as a free-to-play experience alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1. You do not need to own Battlefield 6 to play. EA’s launch package included Battle Royale, the squad-elimination mode Gauntlet, and Portal tools for custom experiences, all centered on Fort Lyndon.
What is Battlefield REDSEC?
REDSEC is a standalone, free-to-play Battlefield experience from Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios. It launched on October 28, 2025. The phrase “releases today” in the original headline refers to that launch date, not a new release in 2026. EA’s launch announcement introduced it alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1.
EA described three parts of the launch offering: Battle Royale, Gauntlet, and Portal. Fort Lyndon is the launch map and play space. Seasonal updates can add modes and maps, so the launch lineup and formats should not be treated as a complete description of every current playlist.
Do you need to buy Battlefield 6?
No. EA says REDSEC can be accessed without owning Battlefield 6. Players who own Battlefield 6 can access both experiences through one launcher, while REDSEC remains a separate free-to-play entry point. See EA’s REDSEC FAQ for the standalone-access details.

What modes did REDSEC launch with?
Battle Royale
EA described a 100-player match in which players land on Fort Lyndon, gather weapons and gear, and fight as the playable area and conflict narrow. The launch format supported either 25 four-player squads or 50 duos, according to the Battlefield Studios launch update. Destruction and vehicles are part of the Battlefield-style approach: destruction can open routes or change the environment during a fight.
Gauntlet
Gauntlet is a squad-based elimination mode built around changing objectives across a sequence of rounds. At launch, eight four-player squads competed through round-based missions. EA’s announcement said each round gave squads a five-minute window to complete its mission. Those are launch details; EA says seasonal updates may change or expand available modes.

EA says REDSEC players can squad up with people playing REDSEC or Battlefield 6 across supported platforms. That does not mean every platform combination or mode necessarily supports every cross-play arrangement; consult EA’s current support information for applicable details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is REDSEC free, and does it have paid content?
Access to REDSEC is free, but free-to-play does not mean every item or progression tier is free. EA says its Battle Pass is shared with Battlefield 6 and includes premium tiers with exclusive cosmetics. EA also describes overall account progression as unified between the two experiences, while each game may have its own challenges. Optional purchases are not required to buy Battlefield 6 in order to enter REDSEC.
What has EA confirmed about its launch scale?
EA’s launch material gives match-format figures—100 players in Battle Royale, arranged as duos or four-player squads, and eight four-player squads in Gauntlet. Those figures describe the launch formats, not independently measured audience size or performance. EA’s official announcement does not establish an independent REDSEC player-count or success statistic.
