Battlefield REDSEC launched on October 28, 2025, alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1. It is free to play, and EA says you do not need to own Battlefield 6. REDSEC is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; PC players can download it through the EA app, Steam or Epic Games Store.
What is Battlefield REDSEC?
REDSEC is a free-to-play Battlefield experience built around Battle Royale, squad competition and player-created Portal experiences. Its setting is Fort Lyndon, a map EA describes as a mix of a Southern California beach community, urban areas, military compounds, a blacksite and suburban neighborhoods. EA presents tactical destruction as a way to alter cover and routes during play.
REDSEC went live on October 28, 2025, at the same time as Battlefield 6 Season 1. The launch announcement is therefore historical; the game is not an upcoming release. EA’s launch community update introduced the experience and its initial modes.
Is REDSEC free, and do you need Battlefield 6?
REDSEC is free to play, and owning the paid Battlefield 6 base game is not required. Free-to-play does not mean offline: EA requires an EA account and an internet connection. A platform account or subscription may also be required depending on platform and region. EA specifically documents a PlayStation Plus requirement for REDSEC components in Germany because of local age-rating and content rules; that exception should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. See EA’s launch announcement and EA Help’s REDSEC requirements.

What modes does REDSEC have?
The lineup has changed since launch, so the launch modes and the later EA Help listing are not identical. EA’s Help page describes Battle Royale, Ranked and Portal, and notes that seasonal updates add maps and modes. Check the current in-game playlist for what is active; the descriptions below distinguish launch details from that later listing.
Battle Royale
At launch, EA described matches for 100 players: either 25 four-person squads or 50 duos. Players looted weapons, armor plates and ammunition, while class-based equipment, training paths, missions and intel caches shaped progression through a match. EA also described vehicles including helicopters, boats and golf carts. These are publisher-described launch features, not independent performance or balance findings. EA’s launch overview has the original details.
Gauntlet
At launch, Gauntlet put eight teams of four into round-based missions, with five-minute windows to complete objectives. Treat those numbers as the launch format, not a guarantee about a currently available playlist. EA’s launch article explains the original modes: Battlefield REDSEC launches alongside Battlefield 6’s first season.

Portal
Portal is the mode for making or discovering custom experiences in the Fort Lyndon play space. Its availability and community-created content can vary over time.

EA Help’s later mode overview includes Ranked, while the launch lineup named Gauntlet instead. A PlayStation Blog launch guide also described Battle Royale Initiation, a newcomer-focused duos playlist on a smaller Fort Lyndon with up to 48 players including bots. That is launch-period information, not confirmation that Initiation remains available. EA Help notes seasonal changes; PlayStation’s launch guide covers Initiation.

Does REDSEC require paid content?
EA’s launch announcement presented the free game separately from Battlefield 6 Season 1’s paid content, including a Battle Pass and premium offerings. That launch-period description does not establish current prices or mean that any paid item is required to play REDSEC. EA said at launch that gameplay-impacting features would be free or earnable. For current content and terms, check the live game and EA’s official information rather than relying on Season 1 details.
