Elon Musk did reach No. 19 on a Diablo IV leaderboard in November 2024—but that was a third-party list of submitted times for one specific challenge, not a verified ranking of every player in the world. The evidence supports “top 20 on that list at that moment,” not the broader claim that he was demonstrably one of the world’s 20 best Diablo IV players.
What leaderboard was Musk ranked on?
The ranking concerned a timed clear of Pit 150, a high-difficulty Diablo IV activity. PC Gamer reported on November 5, 2024, that Musk’s 2:45 run placed him at No. 19 on Helltides, a third-party site listing player-submitted results. PC Gamer also counted 697 entries on that leaderboard at the time. PC Gamer’s November 2024 report

That is a real placement within the list PC Gamer examined. But the list measured recorded Pit 150 times, not general Diablo IV skill, performance across every activity, or rank among all people who played the game. The reported 697 entries were leaderboard submissions—not a count of the game’s players—and do not establish how representative the list was.
Why doesn’t No. 19 prove a global top-20 rank?
A ranking is only as comprehensive as its participants and the activity it measures. Helltides tracked user-submitted runs, and PC Gamer noted that many Diablo IV players might never submit a time. The available reporting does not establish how many players worldwide were represented, or what share of the overall player population the entries covered.

- What the evidence establishes: Musk’s 2:45 Pit 150 time was listed at No. 19 on Helltides when PC Gamer reported it.
- What it does not establish: that every strong player submitted a run, that the list represented the full global player base, or that No. 19 on this challenge equaled No. 19 in overall skill.
So the headline claim was not wholly without a leaderboard basis. The overreach is treating a narrow, submitted-run placement as proof of a worldwide top-20 standing.
How long did the No. 19 ranking last?
Leaderboard positions can change as new results arrive. Forbes reported the ranking had moved from No. 19 to No. 22 by its November 6, 2024 update. That makes the original position a dated snapshot, not a current rank. Forbes’s November 2024 report and update

Does later reporting about account boosting settle who played the run?
No. In January 2025, The Washington Post reported that Musk acknowledged boosting in messages about gaming accounts. It quoted him saying, “It’s impossible to beat players in Asia if you don’t,” and reported his statement that top characters “require multiple people playing the account to win a leveling race.” That account-boosting discussion provides later context about participation in gaming accounts; it does not identify who performed the particular Diablo IV Pit 150 run listed in 2024. No. Blizzard announced in 2026 that in-game Tower leaderboards would return, with recorded leaderboard entries and a build viewer. This is a separate, official system introduced later. It neither ran nor endorsed Helltides’ third-party Pit-time list, and it cannot make the 2024 entry an official Blizzard ranking. Any comparison with a current Tower leaderboard would also need to account for the different activity, game mode, and season. Blizzard’s 2026 announcement
