Yes—Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) has substantial offline content. You can play the single-player campaign, Arcade scenarios, and Instant Action battles against AI without joining the game’s online multiplayer. The limitation is scope: modes built around human opponents remain online, and the sources do not establish whether every platform permits installation or first launch without an internet connection.
What you can play offline
EA identifies three offline choices in Battlefront II: the story campaign, Arcade, and Instant Action. They serve different purposes rather than being three versions of the same mode. The campaign is a structured narrative; Arcade offers shorter, scenario-based encounters; Instant Action is the large-scale option for fighting AI across locations enabled for the game’s Co-Op experience.

| Mode | Offline content | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player campaign | The story mode can be played offline. | It is a solo narrative experience, not a substitute for the game’s online team modes. |
| Arcade | Offline AI scenarios for one player. | Console couch co-op is available only on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One according to StarWars.com. |
| Instant Action | Large battles against AI; offline solo play also brings the Co-Op experience to supported locations. | Only locations enabled for Co-Op are covered by the offline version of that experience. |
| Other multiplayer modes | Not promised as offline modes. | These rely on online multiplayer and should not be treated as playable without a connection. |
That makes the accurate buying answer “yes, with limits.” Offline play is a meaningful part of the game, but it does not turn every mode into a solo or local option.

Campaign: the offline story mode
The campaign is Battlefront II’s single-player story. EA’s community manager specifically lists it among the offline modes, and EA’s launch material describes the game as including a single-player story. If your main requirement is to play alone through a narrative rather than compete with other people, this is the clearest fit.
#1 Best Overall
- A new hero, a story untold in an emotionally gripping new Star Wars campaign that spans over 30 years
- The ultimate battleground
- Galactic scale space combat: Space combat has been designed for Star Wars Battlefront II from the ground up with distinct handling, weapons and customization options
- Battery: No battery used
The campaign should be understood as a fixed story experience. Its offline status does not imply that the game’s online progression, matchmaking, or multiplayer features are available inside it. You can play the campaign for its own missions and narrative without entering a live match, while the broader online component remains separate.
Who should choose the campaign
- Players who want a guided Star Wars story rather than repeatable skirmishes.
- Anyone buying primarily for solo play and not needing human opponents.
- Players who want an offline starting point before deciding whether to use online modes.
Arcade: short offline scenarios and local co-op
Arcade is a separate offline option built around AI scenarios. EA’s launch announcement describes it as supporting offline single-player play, so it is useful when you want a quick match instead of progressing through the campaign.
On supported consoles, Arcade also provides split-screen couch co-op. The platform qualification matters: StarWars.com states that split-screen co-op is available only on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Do not assume that the same local split-screen feature exists on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, or other versions simply because the game can run there through compatibility or an edition-specific release.

- The Ultimate Battleground
- Galactic-Scale Space Combat-Space combat has been designed for Star Wars Battlefront II from the ground up with distinct handling, weapons and customization options

What Arcade is good for
- Trying different combat situations without committing to a story mission.
- Practicing heroes, classes, vehicles, or weapons against AI.
- Playing locally with another person when you own the supported PS4 or Xbox One version and have two controllers.
Arcade’s offline label applies to its scenarios. It does not make the game’s online playlists, matchmaking, or live opponents available without a connection.
Instant Action: the large-scale AI mode
Instant Action is the strongest answer for players who want battles that feel closer to the game’s large multiplayer encounters but need to play alone offline. EA describes it as “offline, large-scale combat against AI foes in scuffles to control a majority of the command posts.” That means the opposing side is controlled by the game rather than by connected players.
EA also explained the mode’s purpose in an April 2020 community update: “We’re bringing the experience you get in Co-Op to offline solo play, too!” In practical terms, offline solo play includes the Co-Op experience on locations that are enabled for Co-Op. The statement does not establish that every location or every multiplayer ruleset is available offline, so treat the supported-location qualification as part of the feature.

Why Instant Action is different from Arcade
Arcade is organized around its own scenarios, while Instant Action is intended for broader, command-post-focused battles against AI. If you want a repeatable, battlefield-scale match after finishing the story, Instant Action is the mode to investigate first. If you want a shorter challenge or local split-screen on the specified consoles, Arcade is the more relevant choice.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat does not work offline
Battlefront II has a substantial online multiplayer component. EA distinguishes that component from the campaign, Arcade, and Instant Action’s offline options, and its community guidance warns that most of the game is online. You should therefore not expect every multiplayer playlist to open without a connection.
Features that depend on matchmaking, connected opponents, or online services should be treated as online-only unless the current platform documentation says otherwise. The offline modes do not provide a general offline copy of the game’s entire multiplayer offering; they are specific experiences with AI or story content.
Offline does not mean “no internet ever”
There are two separate questions:
- Does the game contain modes that run without an active connection? Yes: campaign, Arcade, and Instant Action are identified as offline options.
- Can you install, authenticate, update, or launch every edition for the first time with no connection? The official materials reviewed here do not settle that question for every platform.
EA’s product information mentions an internet connection for specified online services, but that wording is not proof that every platform has identical first-launch behavior. If you are buying for a location with no reliable internet, check the current support information for your exact platform and edition before purchase. Plan to install and update while you do have access, even though the listed offline modes are designed for disconnected play afterward.
Platform and local-play limits
The safest platform statement is narrower than “all versions have the same offline features.” The campaign, Arcade, and Instant Action are identified as offline modes, but the reviewed sources do not establish identical feature availability across every edition or hardware generation.

Choosing the right offline mode
Use your goal, not just the word “offline,” to choose:
Best Value
- Jump into the boots of an elite special forces soldier, equally lethal on the ground and space, in an emotionally gripping new Star Wars campaign that spans over 30 years and bridges events between the films’ Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
- Join your squadron and weave in between asteroids fields, fly through Imperial Dock Yards and take down massive capital ships as you pilot legendary starfighters in high stakes dogfights with up to 24 players and 40 AI ships.
- Team up with a friend from the comfort of your couch with two-player offline split-screen play. Earn rewards, customise your troopers and heroes, and bring your upgrades with you on the online multiplayer battleground.
- Master your craft with customisable character progression. Upgrade abilities unique to each hero, trooper class, and starfighter.
| If you want… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A guided Star Wars narrative | Campaign | It is the dedicated single-player story. |
| Quick practice or compact AI scenarios | Arcade | It is designed for offline scenario play. |
| Big command-post battles against bots | Instant Action | EA explicitly describes large-scale offline AI combat. |
| Local two-player split-screen | Arcade on PS4 or Xbox One | Those are the platforms StarWars.com identifies for the feature. |
| Matches against human opponents | Online multiplayer | The offline modes do not replace connected multiplayer. |
Practical checklist before buying or traveling offline
- Confirm the exact game. Look for Star Wars Battlefront II released in 2017, not another Battlefront title or a similarly named edition.
- Confirm your platform and edition. Local split-screen claims should be limited to the PS4 and Xbox One versions identified by StarWars.com.
- Install and update while connected. The sources do not guarantee that first installation or first launch can be completed offline on every platform, so do not leave that step until you are disconnected.
- Open the offline mode names. Look for Campaign, Arcade, and Instant Action in the game’s mode selection. Their presence reflects the distinctions described by EA.
- For Instant Action, check the available locations. EA’s offline Co-Op-style statement applies to locations enabled for Co-Op, not automatically to every location in the game.
- Test your planned setup before travel. Once installed and updated, disconnect temporarily and verify the mode you intend to use. If the platform requests an account or service check, consult that platform’s current support guidance; the cited sources do not provide a universal workaround.
Does buying Battlefront II make sense for an offline player?
It can, provided you are buying for the offline content that actually exists. The campaign gives you a solo story, Arcade supplies repeatable AI scenarios and specified-console couch co-op, and Instant Action provides the largest offline battles. Together they offer considerably more than a game that merely includes a short tutorial before requiring multiplayer.
The purchase is a poor fit if your main reason is access to every multiplayer mode without internet. Those modes remain part of the online side of the game, and no official statement in the reviewed material converts them into offline playlists. Likewise, a buyer who requires guaranteed no-connection installation or first launch on an unspecified platform should verify that requirement separately; the available product information does not make a platform-wide promise.
The bottom line for offline play
Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) does have offline gameplay: the campaign, Arcade, and Instant Action. Instant Action is the option for large AI battles, Arcade is the compact scenario mode with split-screen co-op on PS4 and Xbox One, and the campaign is the dedicated story. Expect the rest of the game’s major multiplayer offering to require an internet connection, and confirm first-install and first-launch requirements for your exact platform before relying on it in a fully disconnected setup.
