Bayle the Dread is an optional boss at Jagged Peak Summit in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. The clearest weakness supported across the available guides is pierce damage. Dragonwound Grease and the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana are useful dragon-focused options. In the fight, stay near Bayle’s head when you can, wait out his delayed attacks before rolling, and respond to each kind of fire attack differently.
Bayle’s weaknesses and useful weapons
Use a weapon or moveset that deals pierce damage if it suits your build. Windows Central identifies pierce and Dragonwound as weaknesses; Game8 also recommends piercing damage and dragon-slaying weapons. Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana
The Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana drops from the Ancient Dragon-Man at Dragon’s Pit. Its skill adds Dragonwound to a leaping slash, making it a particularly relevant choice for Bayle. Heavy jump attacks can help pressure his stance, but his speed makes it difficult to rely on charged heavy attacks.
Is lightning a weakness?
Game8 says Bayle has less resistance to lightning, but Windows Central emphasizes his fire-and-lightning attacks and names pierce and Dragonwound as weaknesses instead. Treat lightning damage as an alternative suggested by Game8, not a consensus weakness.

Prepare for the fight
Guides give different progression targets, and none establishes a mandatory level or blessing threshold. Game8 recommends Rune Level 170 or higher and Scadutree Blessing 13 or higher; PowerPyx recommends Level 200+ and at least 15+ Scadutree Blessings. Windows Central gives no numerical target and instead suggests returning later with more Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes. - Consider fire and lightning defense: Bayle uses both damage types frequently.
- For optional preparation, PowerPyx notes that the Dragon Communion Priestess at the Grand Altar can provide the Ancient Dragon’s Blessing, which reduces damage taken.
- Choose attacks you can land safely during short openings. A pierce moveset that suits your build is more useful than a theoretically strong attack you cannot reliably connect.
How to read Bayle’s attacks
Windows Central identifies Bayle’s head as his only lock-on point. Fight near it when openings allow; standing directly underneath him makes the camera and attack cues harder to read.
Claws, bites and the grab
Bayle’s basic claw-and-bite strings are delayed. Watch the movement and roll when the attack is about to connect rather than dodging as soon as he starts winding up. If he pulls back with lightning gathering at his mouth, prepare to roll sideways to avoid the grab.
Fire attacks
- Sweeping flame: Roll through the flame as it reaches you.
- Direct breath: Sprint or dodge sideways instead of retreating straight away.
- Fire aimed below himself: Move away from Bayle to escape the area he is burning.
What changes in phase two?
Windows Central places the transition at roughly 50–60% health. Bayle channels, erupts in fire and lightning, and gains electric wings. Watch the attack cues rather than assuming the timing of his first-phase moves still applies.
Aerial fireballs and landing
When Bayle takes to the air and sends fireballs toward you, sprint or roll sideways through their path. Then time a roll through his landing attack.
Fire wall and beam
Roll through the fire wall, then dodge sideways from the beam. Be ready for its delayed explosion after the beam itself passes.
Empowered claws and slams
In the second phase, some empowered claw and slam attacks are followed by delayed lightning. Do not assume the danger ends when the initial strike lands; watch for the follow-up before moving in to punish.

Igon can draw Bayle’s attention and, according to Windows Central, is durable enough to be useful as a distraction. A Spirit Ash can also draw pressure. Windows Central describes Mimic Tear as more damage-oriented but less resilient than Igon.
To unlock Igon’s summon sign, progress his quest through the Jagged Peak Drake encounter and speak with him to receive Igon’s Furled Finger. His gold sign appears inside Bayle’s arena. PowerPyx’s route begins with Igon at Pillar Path Waypoint, continues through Dragon’s Pit and Jagged Peak, and has the player speak to Igon after defeating the two Jagged Peak Drakes. Bayle’s rewards
After defeating Bayle, exchange Bayle’s Heart at the altar for either Bayle’s Tyranny or Bayle’s Flame Lightning. PowerPyx says the choice is one per playthrough. Igon’s equipment can be recovered at the earlier drake encounter area. ( PowerPyx, June 22, 2024.)
