Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: a BeamMP multiplayer server is far lighter than the BeamNG.drive game client. BeamMP’s official minimum estimates call for more than 50 MiB of usable RAM (excluding operating-system overhead), a CPU faster than 1 GHz with multiple cores preferred, 5–10 Mb/s upload bandwidth, and no GPU. Those figures are minimum estimates, not guaranteed specifications for a particular player count, map or mod set. Every player still needs a separate computer capable of running BeamNG.drive itself.
BeamNG.drive and BeamMP are different requirements
“BeamNG server requirements” can mean two different things. BeamNG.drive is the driving game running on each player’s computer. BeamMP is the separate multiplayer server software that coordinates a session. The hardware needed to render vehicles, physics and graphics on a player’s screen is therefore not the same as the hardware needed to host the BeamMP process.

BeamNG’s official system-requirements page, last modified October 2, 2025, lists 16 GB of RAM as the game client minimum and 32 GB as recommended. The page also warns that BeamNG.drive can use a lot of RAM (“+16GB”). These are desktop-client figures. They should not be copied into a BeamMP server specification, and they do not guarantee that the host machine can play the game smoothly while also running a server.
A headless BeamMP host does not render the game world for connected players. Each player’s own PC runs the client and needs the game’s CPU, RAM and graphics capability. The server mainly handles the multiplayer service, networking and simulation coordination.

Official BeamMP server minimums
BeamMP publishes two closely related sets of minimum figures. The Server FAQ says the server needs 50+ MiB of usable RAM excluding operating-system overhead, a CPU above 1 GHz with multicore preferred, no GPU and 5–10 Mb/s upload. The BeamMP-Server README gives a broader estimate of 30–100 MiB usable RAM, again excluding the operating system, and describes the numbers as guesstimates subject to change with each release.
| Resource | BeamMP Server FAQ | BeamMP-Server README | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Usable RAM | 50+ MiB, excluding OS overhead | 30–100 MiB, excluding OS overhead | These are minimum estimates for the server process, not a complete machine recommendation. |
| CPU | Above 1 GHz; multicore preferred | Above 1 GHz; preferably multicore | The published guidance favors multiple cores but does not specify a model or player-count target. |
| GPU | No GPU listed | No GPU listed | A dedicated gaming graphics card is not part of the stated server minimum. |
| Upload bandwidth | 5–10 Mb/s | 5–10 Mb/s | Treat this as a minimum estimate, not a guaranteed allowance for every session. |
| Operating system | Windows or Linux | Project documentation supports the server software | The setup guide describes native Windows and Linux operation. |
The README explicitly says: “These values are guesstimated and are subject to change with each release.” The official material does not publish a dependable recommended CPU, RAM or bandwidth configuration for a specific number of players, a particular map or a heavy mod collection. Do not turn the table into a promise that the smallest machine listed will remain stable under every workload.
How much RAM does a BeamNG server need?
RAM for the BeamMP process
For the server software itself, the official estimates range from roughly 30 to 100 MiB of usable memory, with the FAQ expressing the lower bound as 50+ MiB. “Usable” excludes the memory consumed by Windows or Linux and by other programs on the machine. A computer advertised with a certain total RAM amount will therefore have less available to BeamMP after the operating system, monitoring tools, backups and any other services are running.
Why the game client needs much more
The 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommendation belong to BeamNG.drive on the player’s desktop. A host who also plays locally must satisfy that client requirement in addition to running the server and the operating system. A headless Linux or Windows host serving players does not need 16 GB merely because the game client does.

What the figures do not tell you
BeamMP’s documentation does not provide a tested memory curve by player count, map or mod load. It also does not state a recommended amount of total system RAM for an always-on machine. Use the published numbers as a starting point, leave room for the operating system and other services, and watch actual memory use during the sessions you intend to host rather than treating the minimum as a capacity guarantee.
What CPU do you need to host BeamMP?
The documented threshold is a processor above 1 GHz, with a multicore CPU preferred. No current processor family, benchmark score or core count is specified. That makes the number a compatibility floor, not a performance recommendation for a busy public server.
A multicore mini PC can be a sensible form factor for an always-on home host because it follows the multicore preference and usually consumes less power than a gaming desktop. BeamMP does not endorse a particular mini-PC model or publish a recommended configuration, so choose based on the operating system you will maintain, reliable cooling, storage health and the other services sharing the machine.
Player count, map complexity and mods can change the load. Because BeamMP has not published a player-count sizing table, the responsible method is to begin with the official minimum as a baseline, measure CPU and memory while reproducing your intended session, and move the service to a stronger machine if monitoring shows sustained saturation or instability.

Can you run a BeamMP server without a graphics card?
Yes, the BeamMP FAQ does not list a GPU as a server requirement. A dedicated graphics card is useful for the BeamNG.drive client that players run, but a headless BeamMP host does not render their views. This is why a server-only machine can be an integrated-graphics system or a system with no graphics hardware intended for 3D gaming.
You may still need temporary local display access to install an operating system or troubleshoot a machine, depending on your hardware and administration method. That practical convenience is separate from BeamMP’s stated resource requirements.
Windows, Linux and hosting choices
BeamMP’s FAQ and setup guide describe native operation on Windows and Linux. Select the platform you can patch, secure and recover confidently; the documentation does not require a gaming edition of either operating system.

| Home machine | No recurring hosting bill is established by the documentation; full control over files, configuration and updates; convenient for a household or private group. | You supply the hardware, electricity, maintenance and uptime. Outside players need a reachable inbound connection, router forwarding and firewall rules. Your ISP may use CGNAT or a mobile connection that cannot accept forwarded ports. |

Home hosting: setup sequence
The exact commands differ between Windows and Linux, but the network and configuration decisions are the same. Follow the current BeamMP setup guide for the download and installation details for your platform.
- Install the BeamMP server on Windows or Linux. Use a machine that will stay powered on for the sessions you want to host. Keep the operating system and server files maintained.
- Configure
ServerConfig.toml. Set the server’s name, gameplay options and the port you intend to use. The default port documented by BeamMP is 30814; if you change it, every network rule must use the new value. - Prepare authentication for a public listing. The setup guide discusses server authentication keys for public listing. Follow that guide’s current key-generation and placement procedure rather than copying an old configuration.
- Allow the server through the host firewall. Create rules for the configured port and for both required transport protocols: TCP and UDP. A router rule alone is not enough if the operating system blocks the process.
- Forward the port on your home router for outside players. Forward the configured port to the host’s local IP address over both TCP and UDP. Reserve the host’s local address if your router supports DHCP reservations, so the rule does not point to a different machine after a reboot.
- Start the server and test from outside your home network. A friend on another connection or a suitable external test can reveal forwarding problems that a same-LAN test will not. Players on the same household network may connect without the internet-facing forwarding step.
- Monitor and maintain the host. Watch CPU, memory, network upload and server logs during a real session. Apply BeamMP and operating-system updates deliberately, keeping a backup of
ServerConfig.tomland any authentication material.
Why can’t friends join a self-hosted server?
The server works on your LAN but not from the internet
Check that the router forwards the configured port, not automatically 30814 if you selected another value, and that both TCP and UDP are enabled. Confirm the host firewall allows the same port and that the forwarding target is the server’s current local IP address.
Port forwarding is configured but still unreachable
BeamMP’s FAQ warns that some ISPs place customers behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) instead of assigning a dedicated public IPv4 address. In that situation, your router may show a private or shared address and cannot receive an unsolicited inbound connection even when its forwarding rule is correct. The FAQ also lists mobile 4G/5G connections as not supporting port forwarding. Ask the ISP whether a reachable public address is available, or use a VPS or hosted service instead.

Players can connect but the public listing is missing
Review the authentication-key and public-listing settings described in the BeamMP setup guide, then check the server log for configuration or authentication errors. A server can be reachable to people who know its address without appearing in a public listing if listing authentication has not been configured correctly.
The server becomes unstable with a larger session or mod set
The published minimums are estimates and do not promise a workload. Record CPU, memory and upload use while reproducing the problem, then reduce simultaneous load or move the service to a machine with more available headroom. Because no official sizing chart exists by player count, map or mod load, avoid claiming that a particular upgrade guarantees a fixed number of players.
Planning a reliable host
- Separate client and server budgets: budget BeamNG.drive’s 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommendation for every local gaming PC, not automatically for a headless server.
- Use the server estimates as floors: 50+ MiB in the FAQ and 30–100 MiB in the README exclude operating-system overhead and may change with releases.
- Prefer multicore CPU hardware: this matches BeamMP’s stated preference while leaving room for other host tasks.
- Do not buy a gaming GPU for the server alone: the official server requirements list no GPU.
- Confirm upload and reachability: 5–10 Mb/s is the documented estimate, but an ISP’s CGNAT or mobile-network policy can matter more than raw speed.
- Choose home hosting only if you can maintain it: you are responsible for forwarding, firewall rules, updates, power and recovery.
- Choose VPS hosting when inbound home networking is the blocker: verify the host’s current resources, terms and BeamMP compatibility before signing up.
Bottom line for BeamNG server requirements
A BeamMP server is a lightweight multiplayer service, not a second copy of the BeamNG.drive gaming workload. Official BeamMP guidance points to more than 50 MiB usable RAM, a CPU above 1 GHz with multicore preferred, 5–10 Mb/s upload and no GPU, while the project README gives a 30–100 MiB estimate and warns that it can change. Those are minimum guesses rather than player-count guarantees. The decisive practical requirements for home hosting are a maintainable Windows or Linux machine, correct TCP-and-UDP forwarding on the configured port (30814 by default), and an ISP connection that permits inbound access.
