For a first-time Dungeon Master, the clearest starting point is Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. D&D Beyond explicitly recommends it to new DMs, and the Starter Set bundles the adventure with introductory rules, pre-generated characters, and dice. Dragon of Icespire Peak is another supported starting adventure, though its Essentials Kit is listed as legacy content. For a compact dungeon, consider The Sunless Citadel—with the caveat that its official praise is aimed at introducing new players, not specifically new DMs.
The title promises 26 campaigns, but official sources do not establish 26 distinct adventures as equally beginner-friendly. Rather than pad a list with unverified claims, this guide distinguishes the strongest recommendations from lower-commitment options and material that may take more preparation.
How to choose your first D&D adventure
“Beginner-friendly” is about more than starting at level 1. A useful first adventure should make it manageable to prepare and run: look for a clear structure, usable encounter and setting information, and onboarding aids such as maps or pre-generated characters. Consider how much freedom the group has to wander, how long you want to play, and whether the material assumes familiarity with the rules.
Published adventures can reduce the work of preparing a session by supplying a story, characters, maps, and encounters. In a 2021 D&D Beyond article, then-lead writer James Haeck put the social side plainly: “Most players don’t care how good your adventure is as long as they get to hang out with their friends.” Read the new-DM advice from D&D Beyond.

Best-supported adventures for a new DM
1. Dragons of Stormwreck Isle — strongest turnkey start
This is the most straightforward choice if you want a starter package rather than an adventure book on its own. D&D Beyond recommends it to new DMs and says it introduces game concepts gradually. The adventure is for characters at levels 1–3.
The official physical Starter Set is described as an introduction for brand-new players and DMs. It includes a 48-page adventure booklet, a 32-page introductory rules book, five ready-to-play characters with character sheets, and six polyhedral dice. Those contents reduce the amount a new group must assemble before play. Check the listing for your region, edition, and current stock; the cited product page is the UK store listing. 2. Dragon of Icespire Peak — a quest-based starter, with a legacy-product caveat
D&D Beyond recommends Dragon of Icespire Peak to new DMs. Wizards’ preview describes it as a first D&D experience for a new group, supports three to five players, and advises a first-time DM to read the “Role of the Dungeon Master” section. Its quest-based setup gives a group discrete jobs to take on rather than requiring the DM to invent an entire campaign framework.
The adventure is the introductory adventure in the Essentials Kit, but D&D Beyond currently labels that kit legacy content. Check the edition and availability details before buying; legacy status is a listing caveat, not a claim that every copy or format is unavailable. Read the official adventure preview and check the D&D Beyond marketplace listing.

3. The Sunless Citadel — a compact, dungeon-focused option
The Sunless Citadel, collected in Tales from the Yawning Portal, is a focused dungeon adventure rather than a complete starter box. The collection’s official introduction says it has been regarded as an excellent way to introduce new players to D&D since its publication in 2000. That is meaningful praise for a first group, but it is not an explicit endorsement for first-time DMs, so expect to do your own preparation. Read the collection’s introduction.
Ways to try D&D with less commitment
Free official adventures
D&D Beyond’s campaign catalog lists free adventures including Frozen Sick, Scions of Elemental Evil, and Prisoner 13. It also lists short Borderlands Quest adventures such as Goblin Trouble and Dagger Danger, as well as Intro to Stormwreck Isle. These can help you sample official material without immediately choosing a full campaign. A catalog listing alone does not show that every item is a complete campaign or equally easy for a new DM to run, so check each listing’s format and scope. D&D Adventurers League
D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign framework. Wizards describes it as a way to play without spending much time creating a campaign world or adventures, and recommends Dragons of Stormwreck Isle for new players and DMs. It may suit a DM who wants a supported structure, but whether you can join depends on local organizers and their schedules. Read the Adventurers League FAQ.

Low-level anthology adventures
Wizards’ One-Shot Days guidance describes low-level adventures in Candlekeep Mysteries, Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel, and Keys from the Golden Vault as easy for new DMs to run. These are anthology adventures and one-shot recommendations; that guidance does not establish each entire anthology as a beginner campaign. They are worth considering if you want a self-contained session, not necessarily a ready-made long campaign. See Wizards’ One-Shot Days guidance.

Dragon Delves
Dragon Delves is a collection of ten dragon-themed adventures for characters at levels 1–12. Wizards says the adventures can be run individually or as a campaign, and its quick-start guides summarize plot points, key NPCs, and other setup essentials. Those aids make individual entries worth examining, but the level range and guides alone do not prove every adventure is a good fit for a first-time DM. Check the official Dragon Delves product information.
Which one should you pick?
- Choose Dragons of Stormwreck Isle if you want the strongest explicit new-DM recommendation and a starter set with rules, characters, and dice.
- Choose Dragon of Icespire Peak if a quest-based first adventure appeals to your group; check the Essentials Kit’s legacy listing and edition details first.
- Choose The Sunless Citadel if you specifically want a dungeon-focused adventure and are comfortable preparing material that is not presented as a new-DM starter package.
- Try a free listing or Adventurers League if you want to sample official material or use an organized framework before committing to a full campaign.
- Consider an anthology or Dragon Delves when a particular one-shot or adventure appeals to you, while judging its preparation demands on its own rather than assuming the whole collection is beginner-ready.
For a broader list of official adventures and collections, the official D&D adventure catalog is a useful place to check what exists. A listing confirms availability in the catalog, not that the adventure is easy for a new DM.
