Switch homebrew is third-party software that runs through a custom software environment, but whether a particular console can use it depends on its hardware and firmware—not just its retail name or appearance. The current NH Switch Guide covers first-generation unpatched and modchipped consoles, provided its Atmosphère and Hekate versions support the installed firmware. Check that live guide before updating or starting: its compatibility panel showed firmware 23.0.1 supported when checked in 2026.
What Switch homebrew means
Homebrew is user-created, third-party software. A common route described by the NH Switch Guide uses Atmosphère, a custom firmware (CFW) environment, and Hekate, a bootloader used in the setup. The guide says CFW is not permanently installed simply by running it and unloads on reboot, but it can enable changes that persist. Homebrew is not synonymous with piracy; unauthorized copies of games and homebrew are distinct matters.
emuMMC is an emulated storage environment on the microSD card. The NH guide describes it as a way to keep a separate system environment; it may use up to 64 GB for emulated storage, depending on internal storage size, with additional room needed for duplicated digital game data.
Can your Switch run homebrew?
The NH Switch Guide says it covers first-generation V1 consoles that are unpatched, as well as consoles modified with a modchip, in all regions. Compatibility also depends on the installed firmware being supported by the relevant Atmosphère and Hekate versions. Do not infer exploitability from a model name, serial-number range you found elsewhere, or cosmetic appearance alone: use the current guide’s compatibility checker and follow its route for your console.

| Hardware route | What the guide covers | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| First-generation V1, unpatched | Covered by the NH Switch Guide, subject to the guide’s exploitability check and firmware support. | Not every V1 console is necessarily unpatched. The guide notes that payload reboot behavior differs from the modchipped route. |
| Modchipped console | Covered by the NH Switch Guide, subject to firmware support. | Nintendo describes modchips such as HWFLY and PICOFLY as soldered to the motherboard and says they void the warranty. |
| Other hardware | Not established as supported by the reviewed guide description. | Do not assume compatibility; consult the guide for the exact console and current method. |
Versions change, so treat compatibility information as a snapshot rather than a lasting guarantee. When checked for this article in 2026, the NH guide’s panel said firmware 23.0.1 was supported and named Atmosphère 1.12.0 (released September 27, 2026) and Hekate v6.5.4 (released September 28, 2026). What to prepare
Time and power
The NH Switch Guide recommends reading the full guide before acting, keeping the console plugged in and charged, and allowing at least one hour to follow it carefully. It estimates that required backups can take around 10–30 minutes, depending on the console and microSD specifications. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed timings.

microSD storage
For its emuMMC route, the NH guide recommends a microSD card of at least 128 GB. That recommendation accounts for as much as 64 GB of emulated storage plus space for duplicated digital game data; the actual space needed depends on your configuration and data. It is not a universal requirement for every homebrew setup, and the guide does not specify a particular card brand or speed class. A larger card does not make an otherwise incompatible console compatible.
Backups and trusted files
Follow the current guide’s preparation and backup instructions before making changes. The guide warns that modifying a system carries a possibility of an unrecoverable brick, although it describes bricks as rare; it also cautions that untrusted homebrew can be malicious. Those are community-guide warnings, not measured incident rates.

Risks: damage, warranty, updates, and online use
Nintendo’s Health & Safety Precautions warn that an update, an existing or future unauthorized hardware or software modification, or an unauthorized device may render a Switch permanently unusable. Nintendo also says content obtained through unauthorized modification may be removed.
In its Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ, Nintendo says unauthorized products may damage a product, that resulting damage is not covered by its warranty, and that online functionality may be reduced or a console may stop working after network updates. Nintendo specifically says modchips such as HWFLY and PICOFLY are soldered to the motherboard and void the warranty.

Do not treat CFW presence alone as a guaranteed ban—or assume it guarantees safety. The NH Switch Guide says community experience points to enforcement focused on conduct such as piracy or online cheating, but that is not a promise about any account or console. Nintendo’s published warnings concern functionality, damage, warranty, and updates; neither source establishes an individual ban outcome or a ban rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Legal distinction: homebrew is not the same as piracy
Nintendo’s FAQ describes circumvention products as devices or software that bypass security measures. Nintendo states that importing, marketing, selling, or distributing such products is illegal, and that using them to play unauthorized copies of Nintendo games is unlawful. It also says uploading and downloading pirate copies of its games is illegal. These are Nintendo’s stated positions, not a complete jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal analysis of every homebrew use. Laws differ, so do not read Nintendo’s position as proof that every third-party homebrew application is piracy—or as independent legal advice.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
A cautious way to decide
- Check the current NH Switch Guide for your console’s hardware route and installed firmware before making changes.
- Read the full applicable guide first; keep the Switch charged and allow the guide’s recommended time.
- Plan storage according to the route you intend to use, especially if setting up emuMMC.
- Understand that unauthorized changes can create risks to data, warranty coverage, device function, and online access.
- Use only homebrew and files you trust, and do not use unauthorized game copies or cheat online.
For background, an archived Homebrew-Guide “Before Starting” page also lists homebrew among the capabilities of a modified Switch, but the NH Switch Guide is the relevant place to check current compatibility and instructions.
