Bellwright is worth considering if you want a medieval survival game that grows into settlement management and squad command—but it is still an Early Access game, not a finished campaign. Its appeal is the combination of gathering, crafting, recruiting villagers, expanding settlements and fighting the Crown. If you want a complete story or a polished action game centered mainly on combat, waiting is the safer choice.
What does Bellwright gameplay involve?
Bellwright casts you as a character framed for a prince’s murder and drawn into a rebellion. Its loop combines exploration and survival with building a community and fighting for control of the land. Steam categorizes it as an action, RPG, simulation and strategy game, which reflects how many systems it brings together.

- Survive and explore: gather resources, hunt, craft equipment and manage supplies.
- Build and organize: establish settlements, recruit villagers and develop the infrastructure needed to support them.
- Expand the rebellion: assist villagers, liberate territory and recruit people to your cause.
- Lead troops: direct squads as the conflict grows, alongside the game’s directional combat system.
The result is broader than a straightforward action RPG: progress depends on both what you do directly and how well you build up the people and settlements around you. That blend is the main reason to consider Bellwright—and a reason it may not suit someone looking primarily for tightly focused combat.

Bellwright entered Steam Early Access on April 23, 2024, and its Steam page still identifies it as Early Access. The developer says the current version includes a large map, three progression tiers, settlement AI, directional combat, army command, and story and side quests. It also says the game is incomplete and may change.

The developer’s Steam disclosure puts the decision plainly: “If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development.” That is useful guidance if your purchase depends on a finished story or a stable, final feature set.
Features the developer has listed as planned include horses, sieges, fortifications, additional regions and biomes, a complete storyline, and expanded progression. Those are plans, not features to assume are already in the game.
Changes in the June 9, 2026 update
The developer’s June 9, 2026 update described an optimization pass and a move to Unreal Engine 5.7, along with updated DLSS, FSR and XeSS support. It also reported improvements to opening quests, settlement planning, player-road travel signs, food and medicine gear slots, squad cohesion and map command. The update said full controller support had been added and that the game was available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
That update described crossplay and self-hosted dedicated servers as in active development for later in 2026. It was a dated plan, not confirmation that either feature has since launched. The official website also lists an October 6, 2026 hotfix for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows Store, but the listing does not explain what it changed.
Is Bellwright worth buying now?
That depends on whether the current blend of systems is already what you want. Bellwright is a reasonable fit if you enjoy slow-building progression and want your time split among survival, crafting, settlement logistics, exploration and squad leadership. The developer’s own store description sums up that direction: “Establish and expand your own settlements, liberate the land and assist its villagers, and recruit others to your cause.”
Waiting makes more sense if you want to follow a complete story from beginning to end, dislike buying games while they are still changing, or expect combat polish to be the defining strength. That is a fit judgment based on the game’s Early Access status and its mix of management and survival systems, not a claim that every player will have the same experience.

How to decide whether it fits you
- Choose Bellwright now if the appeal of building a settlement, recruiting workers and fighters, and expanding a rebellion is enough to carry you through an evolving game.
- Wait for further development if a completed storyline or a settled feature set is important to your purchase.
- Compare it with other games by the loop, not just the setting: look at how much time each spends on settlement management versus direct combat, how demanding its gathering and crafting are, how complete its story and progression feel, and whether its solo, co-op and platform options match what you want.
For co-op buyers in particular, the store listing confirms online co-op, but the cited information does not establish current crossplay or dedicated-server availability. Verify those details on the current platform listing if they affect your group.
