Benefits of Multistreaming: How to Reach More Live Viewers

Multistreaming makes one live show available on several platforms, but more destinations do not guarantee more unique viewers. Here’s how gaming creators can test it and evaluate the trade-offs.

Multistreaming lets you broadcast one live show to several platforms at once. Its clearest benefit is broader potential exposure: people can watch on a service they already use. It does not guarantee more unique viewers, stronger engagement, or lasting audience growth. For gaming creators, it works best as a measured way to test where a show resonates—not as a substitute for serving the community.

What multistreaming can do for a gaming channel

Meet viewers on the platforms they already use

A viewer who rarely switches services may be more likely to encounter your stream where they already watch. Broadcasting to selected destinations makes your show available in more places, but the same person may follow or watch on multiple platforms. Platform view counts therefore should not be added together and treated as unique people.

Find out where your content resonates

Different games, formats, and communities may perform differently across platforms. Comparing destination-level watch time and meaningful interaction over several comparable broadcasts can help you decide where to focus. StreamYard recommends reviewing platform analytics for engagement, but that is vendor guidance; a change in views or chat activity does not by itself prove that multistreaming caused a change.

Distribute one production rather than host several shows

With a multistreaming service, one production can be sent to multiple destinations instead of requiring a separately hosted show for each. Some services receive one feed and redistribute it from the cloud, which can reduce the local upload burden compared with sending separate feeds from your computer. The actual workflow and bandwidth depend on the service and configuration; check how the tool you choose handles distribution.

How to test multistreaming without overcommitting

  1. Choose a small, relevant set of destinations. Start with platforms where your intended viewers are active and where you can meet the platform’s setup and account requirements. More destinations are not automatically better.
  2. Check what each platform and tool supports. Confirm that your chosen service can send to the destinations you need, including custom RTMP if applicable. Check orientation, scheduling, connection requirements, and which comment features work on each destination; these vary.
  3. Plan chat coverage before going live. Decide who will watch each chat and how you will respond. If your studio can combine comments, verify which destinations it includes and what moderation or sending functions are available. Otherwise, assign a moderator or prioritize the chats you can actively serve.
  4. Keep the broadcasts comparable. When testing destinations, avoid changing the game, start time, show format, or promotion all at once. Repeating a similar format gives you more useful signals than comparing unrelated streams.
  5. Review each destination separately over time. Look beyond raw views: consider watch time and meaningful interaction as well. Treat the results as clues about where to invest, not proof that one platform or multistreaming itself caused growth.
  6. Decide what to keep. Continue with destinations that bring useful audience signals and that you can support well. Drop destinations that add workload without helping you reach or serve your intended viewers.

Benefits versus trade-offs

Potential benefit What to watch for
Viewers can find the show on a platform they already use. Availability on more platforms does not establish how many additional unique viewers you reached.
Destination analytics can inform where to focus future shows. Raw views alone can mislead; compare watch time and interaction across repeated, reasonably similar broadcasts.
One production can be distributed to multiple destinations. Cloud fan-out, local upload needs, and available features depend on the service and setup.
A limited test can reveal which destinations merit continued effort. Every additional destination can add moderation and audience-management work.

What the audience-growth evidence does—and does not—show

A 2026 arXiv preprint by Maxwell Shepherd analyzed 2,935,985 minute-by-minute observations across 7,762 livestreams from 18 affiliated channels over 3.3 years. It reported average viewership of 14,377 when a creator streamed alone and 6,057 when streaming alongside eight others. After accounting for hour of day, the residualized correlation was smaller (ρ = -0.165). This observational study concerns affiliated creators streaming concurrently within a creator ecosystem—not one creator broadcasting the same show to different platforms—and does not establish that multistreaming causes audience loss.

The same preprint reported approximately 50% median efficiency across 3,243 candidate viewer-transfer events. That finding is specific to detected transfer events in the study dataset; it is not a forecast that half of multistream viewers will follow a creator to another channel.

Platform rules and tool choice

Check the current rules for every destination before simulcasting. Twitch’s official simulcasting guidance is available at Twitch’s simulcasting guidelines; because requirements can change and may depend on your account or agreements, read the current policy rather than relying on a summary. Also verify platform-specific terms and any contract obligations that apply to you.

For tools, compare the destinations you need, setup requirements, comment reception and moderation, plan limits, and whether distribution uses your local connection to send multiple feeds or a cloud service to fan out one feed. StreamYard’s documentation describes destinations and varying requirements, while its help page lists 3, 8, and 10 simultaneous destinations for its Core, Advanced, and Business plans respectively; those are StreamYard plan details, not universal limits, and can change. Restream describes support for 30+ platforms on its product page; that is a vendor-stated capability, not evidence of audience-growth results.
