berkelium.dll is an old third-party application file, not a Windows component. When Windows says berkelium.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the game or application that originally installed it.
What this file actually does
Berkelium was an embedded, off-screen Chromium browser library used by older applications and games that displayed web-based interfaces inside their own windows. berkelium.dll is therefore a program-local runtime file, not a file that normally belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Documented software inventories have included the file with older products such as the Football Manager 2012 Resource Archiver, War Inc. Battlezone, and Might & Magic: Heroes VI. Those are examples, not a complete list. The exact application, build, and dependent files required on your computer depend on the program showing the error.
Public file indexes report 32-bit builds including version 8.0.552.23, approximately 27.29 MB, and entries labelled 0.0.0.0, approximately 31.53 MB. These are third-party metadata entries, not confirmed official release records. Do not use those numbers to choose a replacement download.

Cause-by-symptom guide
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “berkelium.dll is missing” | The parent application was incompletely installed or the file was removed | Verify, repair, or reinstall that application |
| “berkelium.dll was not found” | The file is absent from the application folder or the shortcut points to the wrong location | Check the executable’s folder and restore the original installation |
| “The specified module could not be found” | A dependency of berkelium.dll may be missing, even if the named file is present |
Reinstall the complete application and its official prerequisites |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a mismatched build | Restore the application’s original files rather than replacing one DLL |
| The error began after antivirus detection | Security software quarantined the file | Review quarantine and restore only a trusted original file |
| The error began after moving or modding the program | The loader can no longer find the application’s bundled files | Return the program to its original folder layout |
1. Identify the program that needs berkelium.dll
Do not start by searching the internet for the filename. First identify the parent application.
Check these locations:
- Read the complete error window. Some errors name the game or application in the title bar.
- Look at the shortcut you used. Right-click it, select Properties, and inspect Target and Start in.
- Open the installation folder and look for the executable that launches the program. The DLL normally belongs beside that executable.
- If the error appears during startup, open Event Viewer by pressing
Win + R, typingeventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Open Windows Logs and Application, then inspect events recorded at the time of the failure. Look for the application name, faulting module, or installation path.
If you find several copies of berkelium.dll, do not assume they are interchangeable. An older game may require its own x86 copy and its own bundled dependencies.
2. Verify or repair the application
This is the most likely solution because berkelium.dll ships with the program that uses it.
For a Steam game
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart the game.
Steam should replace missing or damaged files from its own game distribution. If the file is restored and the game starts, the repair is complete.

Open the launcher and look for Repair, Scan, Verify, Validate, or Check files. Run that function for the affected program, then launch it again from the normal shortcut.
For a program installed from an installer
Open Settings with Win + I, then go to Apps > Installed apps. Select the application, choose the available Modify, Repair, or Advanced options entry, and run the repair if provided.
If there is no repair option:
- Back up saved games or application data if necessary.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the original installer or the application vendor’s official distribution.
- Start it from the newly created shortcut.
Do not copy a DLL from another installation. Reinstalling the complete program restores the matching executable, berkelium.dll, and any other files it needs.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL even when the rest of the program remains installed.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event containing
berkelium.dlland verify the exact file path. - Restore it only if the program came from a trusted original installer or verified game files.
- Re-run the application’s repair or verification process.
If the security product identifies the file as malware, do not restore it manually. Remove the old installation, scan the installer, and obtain a fresh copy from the original software publisher or official launcher. If the file is quarantined again immediately after verification, contact the application publisher or your security vendor rather than repeatedly downloading replacements.
4. Check the application’s architecture
The available public evidence points to x86, 32-bit Berkelium builds. A 32-bit program must load a compatible 32-bit DLL, and a 64-bit program cannot use a 32-bit DLL in place of its required 64-bit build. Microsoft explains this 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility boundary in its Windows guidance on running 32-bit applications.
To check the program:
- Open the installation folder.
- Right-click the main executable and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab for available product information.
- Search the application’s official documentation for its supported Windows architecture.
Do not treat a similarly named file from another game as a valid substitute. The required Berkelium build may differ by application, and a file can be the wrong version even when its name is identical.

5. Understand why a visible file can still fail
If berkelium.dll is visibly present, Windows may still report that it cannot find or load it.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Windows loader resolves the DLL and its dependent modules. If a second bundled DLL or runtime is absent, the message may still name berkelium.dll. The application may also be launching from a different folder than the one you inspected.
Check the following:
- Confirm the filename is exactly
berkelium.dll, notberkelium.dll.dll. - Confirm it is in the same application directory as the relevant executable.
- Start the program using its original launcher or shortcut.
- Undo any recent folder move, repack, mod installation, or manual file replacement.
- Repair or reinstall the entire application, not only the visible DLL.
Windows documents the normal DLL search order. That is why copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, or another random folder is usually wrong and can create version conflicts.
6. Install only a runtime the error actually identifies
berkelium.dll is not the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Installing Visual C++ will not provide this file.
A Visual C++ repair is reasonable only when the error also names a Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. In that case, use Microsoft’s official latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads, selecting the architecture required by the application. For an older 32-bit game, that may mean the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows.

They do not replace berkelium.dll.
7. Repair Windows components only if other programs are failing
Because berkelium.dll is an application file, System File Checker normally will not restore it. Windows repair commands are worthwhile when several unrelated applications fail or Windows itself reports damaged system components.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the application again. Microsoft’s SFC and DISM repair instructions explain these commands and their purpose.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repair actions are handled by the full version. For this file, repairing or reinstalling the original game or application remains the definitive fix.
8. Update drivers only when the symptoms point to drivers
A display, audio, or chipset driver is not a normal source of a missing application DLL. Consider driver troubleshooting only if the application also crashes graphically, Windows reports device errors, or several programs fail in the same way.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or another relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also select Properties > Driver to review the device status and installed driver information. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns berkelium.dll.
9. Use Windows Features only for a documented prerequisite
Older software sometimes depends on an optional Windows component, but enabling features at random will not restore berkelium.dll.

Do not enable legacy components merely because the DLL is missing. If the application needs an older .NET component, use the program’s official instructions and Windows Features dialog rather than an unofficial package.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An embedded runtime DLL such as berkelium.dll generally does not need registration.
Running:
regsvr32 berkelium.dll
usually produces another error and does not repair the application. Microsoft documents the command’s intended use in its regsvr32 reference.
Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
Avoid DLL download sites and replacement files shared in forums. A filename alone cannot tell you the required build, architecture, dependencies, provenance, or integrity. The replacement may contain malware, may be incompatible with the parent application, or may leave the missing dependency that caused the error.
Use the original application installer, the official launcher’s verification or repair function, or the software publisher’s support channel. Keep the DLL in the application’s own directory rather than copying it into a Windows system folder.
FAQ
Is berkelium.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the older third-party Berkelium embedded browser library and with applications that bundled it.
Can Visual C++ fix berkelium.dll?
Not directly. Visual C++ may help only when the error also identifies a missing Microsoft runtime. It does not install berkelium.dll.
What if the file is already in the game folder?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be corrupted, the build may be wrong, or the program may be launching from another folder. Repair the complete application rather than copying another DLL.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Application-specific DLLs normally belong beside their program executable. Copying them into system directories can cause conflicts and security problems.
Can SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while berkelium.dll belongs to a third-party application. Use SFC and DISM only when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
What if reinstalling does not help?
Check antivirus quarantine, confirm the shortcut’s target and installation path, undo folder moves or mods, verify the application’s architecture, and look for a missing dependency named in the error. If the file is removed after every reinstall, investigate the security detection with the publisher or security vendor.
