- Which program shows the error: a Canon printer utility, scanning application, startup item, or another application.
- When it appears: during startup, when printing, after removing a printer, or immediately after installing software.
- Which printer was installed: identify the Canon model that was recently connected or removed.
- Which Windows architecture is installed: go to Settings > System > About and check System type.
- Whether printing still works: a startup-only error can indicate a leftover Canon utility rather than a broken printer driver.
The safest repair is to reinstall the exact Canon printer package. Do not download cnb_0323.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
What cnb_0323.dll appears to be
cnb_0323.dll is reported by public file catalogs as part of the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver program. Those catalogs attribute it to CANON INC. and classify it as a printer-driver component, but Canon’s public support pages do not identify this filename directly.
That means the practical conclusion is narrower than many search results suggest:

- It is not proven to be part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.

- Reported versions, file sizes, hashes, and installation paths are inconsistent and should not be treated as definitive.
Some catalog pages label the file as a Windows system file while also identifying Canon as its publisher. That is contradictory. A file installed under a protected Windows driver location is not automatically a Microsoft component.
What the error message means
Windows may display one of several messages:
- “The program can’t start because cnb_0323.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnb_0323.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading cnb_0323.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “cnb_0323.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages point to slightly different problems.
A missing or not found message usually means the Canon package was removed, damaged, or installed incompletely. A specified module could not be found message can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. An entry point error commonly indicates that the installed file and the program calling it are from different package versions. A message saying the file is not designed to run on Windows may indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a file that did not come from the original Canon installation.
Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the Canon package
This is the most likely fix.
- Find the Canon printer model that was installed on the computer. Check the printer label, an old printer entry, or previous Canon documentation.
- Open Canon’s official support portal in your browser.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select the installed version of Windows and the correct architecture when Canon presents those choices.
- Download the current Printer Driver, MP Drivers, Full Driver & Software Package, or equivalent package.
- Close the application showing the error.
- Run the Canon installer as an administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions. Connect the USB cable only when the installer requests it, or select the correct network-printer option.
- Restart Windows after the installation finishes.
- Test printing and reopen the application that displayed the error.
Canon printer drivers are model-specific. Installing a driver for a similar-looking model may leave the original error in place or create a new compatibility problem.

If the installer refuses to run, disconnect the printer, restart Windows, and run the package again. If the error returns after a successful installation, continue with the clean removal procedure below.

Fix 2: Remove the printer and install it cleanly
A failed update or interrupted Canon installation can leave a printer entry pointing to files that no longer exist.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Canon’s support page and run the model-specific driver package.
- Add the printer again when the installer requests it.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Canon package for the exact model.
If a stale printer remains visible, remove it again after restarting. You can also check Control Panel > Devices and Printers for an older copy of the same printer.

Do not delete random DLLs manually. The installer needs to place the driver files, dependencies, services, and printer configuration together.
Fix 3: Remove old Canon software carefully
If the error appears during startup but printing works, an obsolete Canon utility may still be launching.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon entries.
- Uninstall the Canon printer utility, scanner utility, or driver package associated with the old printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current package for the printer you still use.
Also check Task Manager:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old Canon utility.
- Disable it temporarily if it launches the error at every startup.
- Restart and check whether the message has stopped.
If the error disappears while printing continues to work, the problem was probably a stale startup component. If printing fails too, reinstall the complete Canon package rather than disabling more startup entries.
For advanced cleanup, Device Manager can reveal an incomplete driver:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, where present, Imaging devices.
- Right-click the affected Canon device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the obsolete Canon package.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the current Canon installer.
Do not remove unrelated Microsoft or chipset devices.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus quarantine can create a genuine missing-file error, but restoring a file blindly is unsafe.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries created around the time the error began.
- Open any entry associated with the Canon installation or
cnb_0323.dll. - Do not choose Restore until you have confirmed that the file came from the original Canon installation and that the detection was a false positive.
- If the source is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the driver from Canon instead.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file places it back in its original location, where it may be detected again. Run a full scan before restoring anything. If the file is detected repeatedly, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan and investigate the program that is requesting it.

If no Canon printer or Canon software has ever been installed, treat the attribution as unconfirmed. Check the requesting executable’s location, publisher signature, and antivirus history before allowing a replacement file.

A cataloged copy of cnb_0323.dll has been reported as 32-bit, but that report is not authoritative for every Canon package. A 32-bit Canon utility may require a 32-bit driver component even on 64-bit Windows.
Check your Windows architecture at Settings > System > About > System type. Then install the Canon package offered for that Windows version and printer model. Do not substitute a DLL from another computer or package.
If the error says the procedure entry point cannot be found, the program and DLL may be from different releases. Remove the old Canon software and reinstall the complete package instead of replacing only the DLL.
If the message says a specified module cannot be found, cnb_0323.dll may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. A complete Canon reinstall is more reliable than trying to identify and copy individual dependencies.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
Use Windows repair commands only when the problem is broader than this Canon driver. For example, investigate further if several unrelated programs fail, Windows features are malfunctioning, or system files are reporting corruption.
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):

- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon driver package.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a guaranteed way to restore a third-party Canon DLL, so reinstall the printer package even if both commands report successful repairs.

If the error began immediately after a driver update or software removal, System Restore may reverse that change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace obtaining the correct Canon package. After the rollback, install the current compatible driver if the printer still needs to work.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command.

will not restore a missing file, repair a damaged dependency, or rebuild a printer-driver installation. A driver DLL may not support self-registration at all. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL and provides the correct file and architecture.
What not to do
- Do not download

System32,SysWOW64, or an application directory. - Do not trust inconsistent cataloged hashes, sizes, paths, or version numbers as proof of authenticity.
- Do not assume SFC repairs third-party driver files.

- Do not install a driver for a different Canon model simply because the names appear similar.
An isolated download can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different package version, or leave the missing dependency that caused the error. The safe sources are the exact Canon support package, Windows Update, and Microsoft’s printer-driver guidance.

If the Canon printer is obsolete
If Canon no longer provides a package for your Windows version, try Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and review available driver updates. Windows may also offer a compatible class driver when you add the printer.
If neither Canon nor Windows provides a compatible driver, the hardware may no longer be supported. In that case, remove the obsolete Canon utility and use a supported printer or a compatible Windows driver rather than forcing an unknown DLL into the system.
