For a public-domain film channel that needs to run prerecorded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is the first service to consider: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Among the other services documented by YouTube, Gyre is the closest workflow match because YouTube describes it specifically for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos; Upstream is a browser-based 24/7 studio, while OBS is open-source software for operators who want to run their own encoder. These are workflow matches, not a tested ranking of reliability, support, or performance.
Which service fits a 24/7 film channel?
StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube channels that upload recordings or assemble playlists and want them continuously looped without leaving a computer running. You can find the service at StreamNeo. YouTube’s encoder guide describes Gyre specifically as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos, making it the closest documented match among the other services in this comparison. YouTube describes Upstream as a browser-based studio for easy 24/7 live streaming with YouTube integration, but that description does not establish that it has the same film-library or playlist capabilities as Gyre. OBS is a different model: local software for an operator who runs and maintains an encoding setup.
| Option | Documented fit | What to verify or manage |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud looping of uploaded videos and playlists for YouTube, with streams up to 4K 60fps as uploaded. | Confirm that your film files fit the 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots. Review current terms and pricing before subscribing. |
| Gyre | YouTube describes it as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 YouTube streaming of prerecorded videos. | Check current features, price, support, and operating terms directly with the provider. |
| Upstream | YouTube describes a browser-based studio for 24/7 streaming with YouTube integration. | Verify whether its current features suit prerecorded film playlists, plus its price and terms. |
| OBS | YouTube lists OBS as open-source software for video recording and live streaming at no charge. | You operate the computer, encoder, internet connection, and recovery process. No comparative uptime claim is established. |
The service descriptions do not establish comparative uptime, support quality, or performance for Gyre, Upstream, or OBS. Choose based on whether you want cloud playout or to operate an encoder yourself, and check providers’ current terms before committing.
What a hosted stream changes—and what it does not
Cloud playout
A hosted service runs the video playout in the cloud after you upload the source and connect the YouTube channel using its required stream setup. With StreamNeo, the workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream continues without your home computer or connection staying on. StreamNeo includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.

Running an encoder locally
With OBS, the channel operator maintains the streaming computer and connection. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the live server URL and stream key to connect an encoder to the channel. YouTube lists both software and hardware encoders; OBS is identified in its guide as open-source software. This can suit someone who already operates an always-on setup, but the local machine and connection are part of the broadcast chain.
Plan the live stream and the replay separately
A continuous live broadcast is not necessarily a complete, permanent replay of the film schedule. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the live stream runs 12 hours or longer, do not assume YouTube will provide an automatic archive; plan a separate recording or shorter stream schedule if a complete replay matters. Confirm current YouTube archive behavior before relying on it for preservation.

Check film rights before scheduling a loop
“Public domain” is not a universal clearance label for every version of an old film. The U.S. Copyright Office says that works published in the United States before January 1, 1931 are currently in the public domain because their copyright protection has expired. That general rule does not establish the status of every film, soundtrack, restoration, or territory. The Copyright Office also explains that some foreign works that were in the U.S. public domain but still protected in their source country had copyright automatically restored in 1996; its page links to records of notices concerning restored copyrights.
- Identify the specific film and the version you plan to stream, including restoration or added material.
- Check the film’s status in the territories where the stream will be available; age alone is not enough to establish worldwide public-domain status.
- Review music and other included works separately. A film’s status does not automatically settle the rights to every soundtrack or element.
- Keep records supporting your rights assessment. A third-party upload description is not a title-specific rights determination.
YouTube scans all live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. If it identifies a match, YouTube says it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains. If you have a licence for third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; without that allowlisting, a live stream may still be interrupted even when the material is licensed or its permitted territories are restricted. Rights documentation and platform enforcement are separate issues: a stream can be interrupted by Content ID even when you believe you have permission.
