They are different tools, not competing playlist formats. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file that lists complete local media files and feeds them in sequence to FFmpeg. An HLS media playlist is a manifest for segmented media delivery. For YouTube HLS ingestion, YouTube supports media playlists and ignores master playlists. Choose the concat demuxer to sequence compatible files as FFmpeg input; choose HLS when you intend to send segmented media using YouTube’s HLS protocol.
First, identify which “playlist file” you mean
The phrase can mean either of two text files that serve different purposes:
- FFmpeg concat script: a local list of whole files for the concat demuxer to read one after another. It is an input to FFmpeg, not an HLS delivery manifest. FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer.
- HLS media playlist: an HLS manifest that describes media segments for delivery. FFmpeg’s HLS muxer can create a playlist and segment files; that is separate from using the concat demuxer. FFmpeg documents the HLS muxer.
If by “playlist” you mean a list of recordings on your computer, you are probably asking about the concat demuxer. If you mean an .m3u8 manifest and segmented delivery, you mean HLS.
Which method fits the job?
| Goal | Use | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Feed compatible local media files to FFmpeg in sequence | Concat demuxer and a text script | Files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases; duration inaccuracies can affect timestamps. |
| Join clips that need re-encoding or normalization | Concat filter | Unlike the demuxer workflow, this is the approach to consider when re-encoding is needed. |
| Deliver segmented content to YouTube over HLS | HLS media playlist and media segments | Meet YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements; a master playlist is ignored. |
FFmpeg describes the concat demuxer as reading files and directives from a text file, then demuxing the files successively as though their packets had been muxed together. That does not make the text script an HLS playlist or cause it to produce HLS segments. See the concat demuxer documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When to use the concat demuxer
Use it when your goal is to present a fixed set of local files to FFmpeg in sequence, and their media streams are compatible enough for file-level concatenation. This can avoid re-encoding, but it is not a universal joiner for arbitrary clips.
Check the inputs before relying on stream copy
- FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Differences in stream layout or encoding can make concatenation fail or produce poor transitions.
- The demuxer adjusts timestamps using file durations. Unequal stream lengths can introduce gaps, and inaccurate duration information can cause timestamp artifacts.
- If the clips need re-encoding or substantial normalization, consider the concat filter instead. FFmpeg’s FAQ identifies it for cases where re-encoding is needed and notes that file-level concatenation is not supported for the inputs. Read FFmpeg’s concatenation FAQ.
Because the source-file properties and YouTube ingest protocol are not specified here, there is no single safe command to prescribe. Confirm the media streams and decide whether the output will be sent using RTMP or HLS before selecting a complete FFmpeg command.

When to use an HLS playlist for YouTube
Choose HLS when the workflow is segmented delivery to YouTube, not merely because you have a list of recordings. YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation says it supports media playlists and ignores master playlists. It also specifies HTTPS, persistent connections, one encoded stream, and muxed audio and video. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.
Media playlist, not master playlist
A media playlist describes the media segments used for the stream. A master playlist can point to variant streams, but YouTube says master playlists are ignored for HLS ingestion. The relevant YouTube-facing playlist is therefore a compliant media playlist, accompanied by the segments it describes.

HLS is an output and delivery workflow
FFmpeg’s HLS muxer creates playlist and segment output; the concat demuxer consumes a file-list script as input. These mechanisms can appear in different parts of a larger workflow, but one does not substitute for the other. The exact HLS command depends on the input, encoding choices, and YouTube ingest setup.
Common decision mistakes
- Treating every text file called a playlist as the same format: determine whether the file lists whole local files for FFmpeg or indexes HLS segments.
- Assuming stream copy will join any clips: check stream compatibility first; differing codecs, time bases, or stream layouts may require a filter and re-encoding.
- Assuming the concat demuxer creates HLS: it does not. Use the HLS muxer and meet YouTube’s ingest protocol requirements for HLS delivery.
- Sending an HLS master playlist to YouTube: YouTube’s documentation says master playlists are ignored; use a media playlist that meets its requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep pre-recorded videos playing as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo avoids leaving a computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploads from the cloud. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera streaming. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
