The Insta360 X5 is the clearest documented pick for 360-degree live streaming. Insta360’s support tutorial lists it for both interactive 360 Live and Reframe Live, and a separate wired webcam workflow lets you use it with OBS. The Insta360 X4 is also listed for the app-based modes. Ricoh’s THETA X is a possible wireless RTMP/RTMPS alternative, but the available Ricoh documentation does not establish an equally complete setup path. These are documentation-based recommendations, not results from comparative hands-on testing.
Which 360 camera should you choose for live streaming?
| Camera | Documented live-stream workflows | What the evidence establishes | What remains unclear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insta360 X5 | Insta360 app for 360 Live or Reframe Live; wired webcam connection to a computer running software such as OBS. | The app tutorial lists YouTube, Facebook, Kwai and custom RTMP. The OBS guide specifies a 2880×1440, 30 fps setting for 2:1 panoramic webcam output. | Comparative real-world quality, latency, sustained runtime, battery life during streaming and audio performance have not been established. |
| Insta360 X4 | Insta360 app for 360 Live or Reframe Live. | The X5 tutorial also names X4 for these app-based modes. | Current price, availability, value versus X5 and model-specific output details are not established here. |
| RICOH THETA X | Ricoh documentation describes wireless RTMP/RTMPS streaming through a THETA plug-in over Wi-Fi. | An archived THETA X specification lists H.264 live-stream video and linear PCM audio. Ricoh’s wireless page describes 4K/2K video streaming to YouTube, Facebook and similar sites. | The documentation does not establish a complete current THETA X setup, a streaming-duration figure or an exact platform-by-model matrix. |
| Insta360 X6 | Not a confirmed recommendation. | Official Insta360 pages conflict: a general FAQ says app live streaming is not currently supported, while the X6 tutorial describes modes and says functionality will be supported in subsequent firmware updates. | Current firmware-specific live support needs clarification before buying for this purpose. |
Choose based on the workflow and audience experience you need, not a camera’s maximum recording resolution. Insta360 lists 8K recording for X5, but that does not mean it can deliver 8K live output.
360 Live or Reframe Live: which output do you need?
360 Live for an audience that wants to look around
A 360 stream is intended to let viewers explore the spherical scene rather than receive one fixed camera composition. Confirm that your destination and the viewer’s playback experience support the result you want; the camera tutorial’s mode name alone does not guarantee that every destination handles 360 playback identically.
Reframe Live for a conventional composition
Reframe Live turns the camera’s spherical view into a selected flat composition. It suits an audience watching a regular video frame, where you want to direct attention to a person, instrument or part of a room instead of asking viewers to pan around.

Insta360 X5: the most clearly documented option
Use the Insta360 app
- Check compatibility first. Use the current X5 Live Stream Tutorial to confirm the required Insta360 app version and camera firmware. Version requirements can change; do not rely on old setup notes.
- Choose a mode and destination. The tutorial lists 360 Live and Reframe Live for Kwai, Facebook, YouTube and RTMP. Select the mode that matches whether viewers should explore the sphere or see a flat composition.
- Authorize the destination account. Complete the platform authorization described in the app tutorial before going live.
- Keep the app open. Insta360’s instruction is: “During the live stream, please keep the app running in the foreground.” An interrupted app or connection can disrupt the workflow.
- Check the live preview and connection before an important broadcast. The documentation establishes the workflow, not guaranteed uptime or performance under every network condition.
Use the X5 as a wired webcam with OBS
- Connect the camera to your computer by wire and select the webcam workflow described in Insta360’s X5 OBS guide.
- In OBS, configure the panoramic output at 2880×1440 and 30 fps for the guide’s 2:1 360 panoramic output.
- Check your destination’s ingest requirements separately. The camera guide’s OBS setting describes the webcam output; it is not proof that every platform accepts that resolution, frame rate or spherical format.
- Run a private or otherwise low-stakes setup check to confirm framing, sound, connection and how the destination presents the stream before relying on it for an event.
Do not infer HDMI support from the webcam instructions: Insta360’s general FAQ says its 360 cameras do not support HDMI output for live streaming.
RICOH THETA X: a possible wireless RTMP route
Ricoh’s archived THETA X specification lists H.264 live-stream video and linear PCM audio. Ricoh separately describes a THETA plug-in that streams over Wi-Fi using RTMP/RTMPS, with 4K/2K video and destinations including YouTube and Facebook. That establishes a plausible wireless workflow, but not a complete current, model-specific recipe. Before choosing it, confirm the current plug-in instructions, the exact THETA X and destination compatibility, output settings, audio connections and expected duration with current Ricoh documentation.

Ricoh warns that shooting can stop automatically if the camera temperature rises. Treat heat as a practical risk for long sessions, particularly in a warm room or an enclosed setup; the available documentation does not provide a comparable sustained-runtime figure.
Why X6 needs a firmware-specific check
Insta360’s X6 recording specifications are not evidence of live-stream support. Its general live-stream FAQ says the X6 does not currently support app live streaming, while the X6-specific tutorial describes 360 and flat modes and says live-stream functionality will be supported in subsequent firmware updates. Those statements do not establish what works on a particular current firmware. Ask Insta360 support or check current firmware notes for the exact camera and app version before buying an X6 specifically to stream live.

What to verify before buying or going live
- Exact model and firmware: a feature listed for one camera should not be assumed for another, and app workflows can change with updates.
- Destination and mode: verify whether the platform accepts your chosen 360 or reframed output, and whether the audience can view it as intended.
- Live resolution and frame rate: distinguish live-output settings from recording specifications. For X5’s documented OBS panoramic workflow, the stated setting is 2880×1440 at 30 fps.
- Duration and temperature: do not assume a recording-time figure means the camera can stream for that long. Ricoh specifically warns that elevated temperature can stop shooting; comparable runtime data is not established for these options.
- Power, network and audio: confirm the power arrangement, connection stability and compatible sound setup for your exact camera and workflow. The available documentation does not support a side-by-side audio or battery-runtime winner.
- Accessories: check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information for cables, mounts and microphones rather than assuming a particular accessory will work.
Common problems and what to check
The X5 app stream stops or will not start
Check that the app and camera firmware meet the current tutorial’s requirements, the destination account is authorized, the camera has an active connection and the app remains in the foreground. If the behavior persists, verify the current tutorial and platform settings rather than relying on an older version’s menu labels.
The OBS picture is not panoramic or has the wrong shape
Check the X5 OBS guide’s 2880×1440, 30 fps setting for 2:1 panoramic webcam output, then inspect the destination’s own ingest and playback behavior. Do not switch to an 8K recording setting expecting it to control live output.

The stream is not interactive 360
Confirm that you selected 360 Live rather than Reframe Live and that the destination presents spherical video as expected. Reframe Live is the flat-composition mode.
A THETA X session ends unexpectedly
Ricoh warns that elevated camera temperature can stop shooting. Check the camera’s temperature and placement, and consult current Ricoh guidance on operating conditions; a guaranteed maximum session length is not established here.

You are considering X6 because its tutorial shows live modes
Resolve the conflicting official guidance for your exact firmware before purchase. The tutorial’s descriptions do not override the FAQ’s statement that app streaming is not currently supported.
Can StreamNeo replace a 360 live camera?
No. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera, and the available information does not establish 360 equirectangular playback or interactive spherical streaming. If your goal is instead to loop uploaded video on YouTube, see StreamNeo. Its cloud workflow is upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key and go live; the computer does not need to stay on. For a camera-based 360 broadcast, use a camera workflow documented for the exact model and destination.
