The LG 38WR85QC-W is the best 38-inch monitor for most people: its 3840×1600 screen pairs 144Hz gaming with USB-C charging, a KVM, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayHDR 600. For an office-first setup, the Dell UltraSharp U3824DW trades speed for an IPS Black panel and business-focused hub features. The category is small, so older models are worth considering only when the specific unit, warranty and price make sense.

Why the LG 38WR85QC-W is the best overall
It combines the defining benefit of this size—3840×1600 workspace—with a 144Hz refresh rate and features useful beyond gaming. LG specifies Nano IPS, DisplayHDR 600, HDMI 2.1, adaptive-sync support, speakers, a USB-C connection with up to 90W power delivery and KVM functionality. That makes it a stronger all-round fit than a 60Hz office display when the same screen has to serve both a laptop and a gaming PC.
For gaming, the 144Hz mode can make motion and input feel smoother than 60Hz, provided the game, computer and connection can use it. LG notes that reaching the maximum refresh rate requires suitable DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1-capable graphics hardware. The monitor supports NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro according to LG’s specifications; confirm the supported mode for the input and GPU you intend to use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Its trade-offs are cost and the limits of IPS contrast. DisplayHDR 600 is a more meaningful HDR credential than HDR10 compatibility alone, but it does not make this an OLED-like HDR screen: IPS black levels and local-dimming performance remain a different proposition. If your main goal is deep blacks and dramatic HDR rather than extra workspace and refresh rate, compare a 34-inch OLED before buying.
Choose the Dell U3824DW for office-first work
The Dell UltraSharp U3824DW is the specialist option for people who spend most of their screen time on documents, spreadsheets, code and professional workflows. Dell specifies a 37.52-inch-class, 3840×1600 IPS Black panel with 2000:1 contrast, a USB-C hub, KVM and up to 90W USB Power Delivery. IPS Black’s higher static contrast than conventional IPS can be useful for dark interfaces and office work, while the hub and KVM target multi-computer desks.
The decisive compromise is 60Hz. That is sufficient for productivity, but it is a poor match for someone paying for a gaming-oriented high-refresh experience. Dell’s US listing showed $1,449.99 and limited-stock messaging on August 16, 2026; at that observed price, the faster LG was listed for less. The Dell can still be the better fit when its panel, hub design or Dell business support matters more than gaming speed. See Dell’s product page for its current specifications and availability.

What a 38-inch ultrawide gives you
Most 38-inch ultrawides have an approximately 37.5-inch viewable diagonal, a 21:9 aspect ratio and 3840×1600 native resolution. At roughly 110 pixels per inch, the format gives more vertical room than a 34-inch 3440×1440 ultrawide while retaining a wide desktop. The extra height is useful for code, documents, timelines and spreadsheets; the width makes side-by-side windows practical.
3840×1600 contains about 6.14 million pixels. That is more than 3440×1440 and less than 4K, so gaming demands generally fall between those formats. Actual frame rates depend on the game, graphics settings, ray tracing, GPU and use of upscaling. A laptop may be able to show the native resolution but not drive it at 144Hz: check its external-display limits, GPU, port implementation, cable and any dock in the signal path.
3840×1600 can be comfortable at 100% scaling for many people, but text size depends on eyesight, viewing distance and operating-system preferences. Use the native resolution and adjust scaling to comfort; if very crisp text or fine photo detail is the priority, a 4K 32-inch or 40-inch 5K2K display has a density advantage.

How to decide which 38-inch monitor fits
For gaming and mixed use, prioritize refresh rate and connectivity
Look for 100–144Hz if you play fast games or want smoother scrolling as well as work use. A high refresh rate is only useful if the graphics card and connection can deliver it. Check for the required DisplayPort or HDMI capability, adaptive-sync compatibility and a suitable cable. Ultrawide support is common in modern PC games but not universal: cutscenes may stay 16:9, menus can scale poorly, competitive games may restrict field of view, and some older titles need community fixes.
For laptop work, verify the entire USB-C path
A compatible USB-C connection can carry video, USB data and charging through one cable, and the monitor’s hub can host peripherals. Both recommended displays specify up to 90W delivery. That does not guarantee full-speed charging for every laptop: high-performance workstations and gaming laptops may need more power or their own adapter. The laptop’s port must support video output, commonly DisplayPort Alt Mode or a suitable USB4/Thunderbolt implementation; a USB-C-shaped port alone is not enough.

KVM functionality lets a keyboard and mouse be shared between computers, but it is not synonymous with a full-featured Thunderbolt dock. Before relying on it, check the monitor manual and confirm the number and type of USB upstream connections, whether changing video input changes the USB host, hub speeds, and whether webcam, audio and Ethernet behave as you expect. USB-C bandwidth allocation can also affect simultaneous high-refresh video and hub use.

For contrast and HDR, set expectations around IPS
Standard or Nano IPS typically offers broad viewing angles and strong color response, while IPS Black improves static contrast. Neither label guarantees uniformity across individual units; IPS glow and backlight bleed vary by panel. LG’s DisplayHDR 600 certification is a useful feature, not proof of OLED-class blacks or HDR. The Dell emphasizes its IPS Black panel and office features rather than HDR; its listed brightness is 300 cd/m².
For desk fit and ergonomics, measure the setup
Both monitors are roughly 35 inches wide with their stands. Dell lists the U3824DW at approximately 35.2 inches wide with the stand at its lowest position; LG lists its model at about 35.3 inches wide with the stand. Measure desk width and depth, rear clearance, viewing distance and the full stand footprint, not just the panel. Check height, tilt and swivel adjustment, and verify that a VESA arm is rated for the monitor’s weight and mounting pattern. A large curved screen can take more desk depth than its width alone suggests.

- 34-inch 3440×1440: Usually less expensive, easier to fit and less demanding on a gaming GPU. It gives up the 38-inch format’s extra vertical workspace.
- 34-inch OLED: A better direction if contrast, response and HDR matter more than the larger 38-inch work area. It is not a substitute if 1600 vertical pixels are the reason for choosing this size.
- 32-inch 4K: A sensible choice for higher pixel density and fine text or image detail, with less horizontal workspace than a 21:9 ultrawide.
- 40-inch 5K2K: Offers more pixels and workspace, often at higher cost and with greater graphics demands; some models favor productivity over high-refresh gaming.
- 49-inch 32:9: Provides a much wider, two-monitor-like layout, but requires more desk width and is less naturally suited to vertical documents. Game and remote-work compatibility can also be less predictable.
For console gaming, do not buy a 38-inch 21:9 screen expecting the console to use all its width. Consoles generally target 16:9 output, so the picture may have side borders or otherwise leave the ultrawide area unused.

Should you buy an older 38-inch monitor?
The Alienware AW3821DW, LG 38WN95C-W, LG 38GN950-B and Acer Nitro XR383CUR may appear in searches and enthusiast discussions, but they are older alternatives rather than clear current first choices. Current US official stock and prices for these models are not established here; availability may depend on leftover, marketplace or refurbished units. The RTINGS Alienware AW3821DW review is useful background on that older model, but it does not establish what a particular used listing is worth today.
Consider an older unit only when its lower price compensates for age and any warranty risk. Before purchase, establish who the seller is, whether it is new or refurbished, the return period, the warranty and its regional coverage. Ask whether the stand, power supply and required cables are included, and inspect for dead pixels, backlight bleed and signs of panel wear. Avoid treating a marketplace price without condition and return details as a reliable value recommendation.
Setup checks if something does not work
The screen is limited to 60Hz
- Connect the monitor directly to the computer to rule out a low-bandwidth dock.
- Use DisplayPort or the monitor’s specified HDMI 2.1 input, with a cable rated for the required signal.
- In the operating system’s advanced display settings, select the target refresh rate.
- Check the monitor’s on-screen menu for input-specific limits, and verify the GPU, laptop port and cable support the resolution and refresh combination.
USB-C displays an image but does not charge
Check that the host port supports video, the cable supports video and power rather than charging alone, and the laptop accepts charging through that port. The laptop may need more than the monitor’s maximum 90W, or its maker may restrict charging on that connection.
The KVM does not switch peripherals
Connect each computer to the intended video input and USB upstream path, enable or configure the monitor’s USB/KVM switching, and plug the peripherals into the monitor. Confirm that the selected video input is associated with the computer’s USB upstream connection.
Text looks soft or the display will not fit the desk
Confirm the screen is running at native 3840×1600 before changing scaling, and check whether a dock is altering the signal. For fit, measure the assembled stand and rear clearance; if using an arm, confirm its weight rating and the monitor’s VESA pattern before installation.
