Why start with a 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress?
The shape gives you a back four, two central or defensive midfielders, three attacking midfielders and a lone striker. PCGamesN recommends a 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress as a balanced FM24 option, while distinguishing approaches for favored teams, underdogs and uncertain matchups (PCGamesN’s FM24 tactics guide).
Think of the formation as a starting structure, not a complete tactic. Roles, duties and team instructions determine how players move and which spaces are exposed. Sports Interactive says FM24 changed player movement and rotation to support more positional play; those changes make role combinations important, but do not establish that one setup is strongest in every save (Sports Interactive’s FM24 match-engine feature).
How to build the tactic around your players
Balance the double pivot
Give the two central midfielders complementary jobs: one can offer forward movement, while the other stays responsible for protecting the space ahead of the defense. Sports Interactive’s FM24 illustration pairs a Segundo Volante with a defensive Ball-Winning Midfielder. Use that pairing if your players suit those roles; treat it as an example of positional play, not a complete plug-and-play tactic (Sports Interactive’s role and match-engine feature).

If both midfielders are drawn forward, the space in front of the center-backs may be easier to attack. If both prioritize protection, you may have less support arriving beyond the ball. Choose duties with the players you have and the level of risk you can accept.
Connect the midfield to the striker
The official example uses an Advanced Playmaker behind the striker. This role can provide a link between the double pivot and the forward, but it does not guarantee a particular number of chances or goals. Consider whether the player you assign can perform the role and whether the rest of the attacking line gives them useful options.

Set pressing intensity you can sustain
Pressing and attacking instructions feature in third-party FM24 recommendations, but they are advice to test rather than universal defaults. A high press asks players to work intensely and can leave space behind it when opponents play through pressure. Moderate the intensity if your squad cannot sustain it or the match is exposing those spaces.
Test defensive instructions rather than copying them blindly
GiveMeSport recommends “Get Stuck In” and “Invite Crosses” for its 4-2-3-1 setup (GiveMeSport’s FM24 tactics guide). These are choices from that guide, not official settings or requirements for a 4-2-3-1. Try them only if they suit your players and the opponent; assess whether the resulting challenges and wide defending are helping or creating problems.

Which 4-2-3-1 variant fits the match?
PCGamesN frames tactical choices around whether your team is favored, an underdog or uncertain relative to its opponent. Use that context to decide how much risk to take rather than treating one instruction set as right for every fixture.

Should you download a community tactic?
Community listings can be useful for comparing ideas or importing a tactic, but a page ranking or submitted results do not establish that a download is the best choice for your save. SortitOutSI notes that match-engine patches affect tactic effectiveness (SortitOutSI’s FM24 tactics listing).
- Check which FM24 version or patch the tactic was made for.
- Test it in your current save rather than assuming results will transfer across squads or matchups.
- Inspect the roles and instructions so you understand the defensive and attacking trade-offs.
- Treat community performance figures as unverified comparisons unless their testing conditions are established.
What to take from FM24’s role and movement changes
Sports Interactive describes FM24’s match-engine work as improving off-the-ball movement and player rotation, with changes intended to support positional play. Its feature description also notes a new player role and refinements to existing roles. That context supports paying attention to how roles combine in the 4-2-3-1; it does not prove that a particular role pairing or tactic wins more often.
