For a flat 4-4-2 in EA Sports FC 24, start with balanced build-up, Forward Runs, and a moderate defensive line. Dot Esports’ FC 24-era setup uses Press After Possession Loss, 50 width, and 45 depth; treat it as a baseline to tune, not a proven best tactic for every opponent or mode.
Recommended FC 24 4-4-2 custom tactics
The following settings are a practical starting point for the flat 4-4-2. Dot Esports published them for FC 24 in 2023, chiefly in an Ultimate Team context; the guide does not establish a measured win rate.

Player instructions
- Goalkeeper: Comes for Crosses; Sweeper Keeper.
- Fullbacks: Stay Back While Attacking.
- Wide midfielders: Come Back on Defense; Get in Behind.
- One central midfielder: Stay Back While Attacking; Cover Center.
- Other central midfielder: Cover Center.
- Both strikers: Stay Central; Get in Behind; Stay Forward.
These instructions preserve cover behind the ball while giving the wide midfielders and forwards routes to support counterattacks. If you prefer additional midfield protection, an alternative guide recommends keeping both central midfielders back; that trade-off is covered below.

Why the flat 4-4-2 works—and where it can struggle
The formation offers two central forward options and a compact defensive structure. FourFourTwo describes two banks of four returning to defend, with a midfielder able to join the attack and add another forward option. Against a five-defender setup, the 4-4-2 may have fewer open lanes and more opponents to get past. Forward Runs and two strikers can help threaten space, but do not assume the formation will create chances automatically; adjust your approach when the opposition crowds the central and wide routes. Alternative slider choices: choose the trade-off
FC 24-era guides do not agree on one exact recipe. GameSkinny’s alternative differs in several settings, so use it as a coherent adjustment rather than blending individual values into a supposed consensus.

More recovery pressure or more defensive security?
Press After Possession Loss can help the team try to regain the ball quickly, but it can also leave space for a counter. If opponents repeatedly break through after you lose possession, switch the defensive style to Balanced and lower depth. FourFourTwo recommends Balanced defense and reduced depth for players being caught out; GameSkinny also warns about the counterattacking risk of the press. FourFourTwo · GameSkinny
One midfielder forward or both holding?
Letting one central midfielder stay available to join attacks gives you another forward option. Keeping both on Stay Back While Attacking prioritizes protection in front of the defense. If your fullbacks or wide midfielders are often caught high, the more conservative pairing is a reasonable alternative; if you struggle to support the two strikers, try the one-holding-midfielder version.

Higher line or less space behind?
A higher line asks center-backs to cover more ground and increases the risk of through balls into the space behind them. The cited guides do not establish one universally optimal depth. Start at the recommended 45, move toward the alternative 40 if you are exposed, and judge the change by the chances opponents create through your back line.

- Center-backs: Strength and pace help when defending transitions; pace matters especially if you choose to defend higher.
- Central midfielders: Look for well-rounded players who can contribute on both sides of the ball. The choice to hold one or both midfielders back determines how much cover you have.
- Wide midfielders: Prioritize speed and the ability to recover defensively as well as support the counter.
- Strikers: Favor aerial ability if you plan to cross; choose technical, ball-carrying forwards if they will receive to feet and advance possession.
