For a balanced 5-2-1-2 in EA Sports FC 25 Ultimate Team, start with Balanced build-up and a Balanced defensive approach. Keep the back three dependable, use one central midfielder to protect the middle, let the other help move the ball forward, and pair a forward-running striker with one who can link play. Use Wingback roles as a measured way to add width; make them more aggressive only if you can manage the space they leave behind.
This is a practical starting setup, not an EA-endorsed preset or a verified competitive meta. FC IQ roles, focus settings, player familiarity and your squad all affect how the formation behaves.

How 5-2-1-2 works in FC 25
The 5-2-1-2 defends with three centre-backs, two wide defenders, two central midfielders, a central attacking midfielder and two strikers. In FC 25, the wide positions are RB and LB rather than the RWB and LWB labels used in older versions. EA describes formation as the team’s defensive arrangement; player Roles shape what individuals do, so your attacking shape can look different from the formation screen.
That distinction matters: choosing 5-2-1-2 gives you a compact base, but it does not by itself dictate how quickly you attack or how far your defenders push up. FC IQ’s roles and tactical settings influence those behaviors. EA’s FC IQ overview explains the formation, roles and tactical settings.

These are role-behavior recommendations based on EA’s descriptions, not a claim that a specific combination is best for every squad. Available roles depend on the selected positions and current in-game options; check them in Squad view rather than copying role names blindly. EA’s launch overview lists 31 Roles and 52 Role/Focus combinations, while its later First Frost notes add two Roles and thirteen Focuses. How to tune the tactic for your squad
- Check positions and Role Familiarity. Prefer players in suitable positions and inspect their familiarity in Squad view. EA says base Roles are viable; Role+ and Role++ indicate greater familiarity, not a requirement for the tactic to work.
- Review both tactical views. Use the in-game With Ball and Without Ball views to see how roles affect movement. The named formation is the defensive shape, so do not assume the team will remain in five-at-the-back positions while attacking.
- Adjust one wide defender at a time. If the attack lacks width, test a more forward-minded role on one side first. If opponents counter into the channels, return that player to a more balanced or supportive role, or reduce your defensive aggression.
- Save a second game-state option. Create a more attacking or more defensive custom tactic for situations that call for it. EA says you can save up to five custom tactics, each with its own formation, settings and roles. Share codes can encode those choices, but a code does not establish that the tactic is effective.
What to change when the setup does not fit
- You cannot create enough width: try a more attacking wide-defender role on one side, then check whether the extra width is worth the recovery risk.
- You are exposed to counterattacks down the flanks: use a more supportive wide-defender behavior and consider a less aggressive defensive approach.
- Your midfield is bypassed: make sure one central midfielder is assigned a protective function rather than asking both to advance.
- Your strikers feel isolated: use a link-up role for one forward or try Short Passing to encourage closer support.
- Your attacks lack runs behind: use a forward-running option such as Advanced Forward, or choose Shadow Striker at CAM if you want more direct runs from that position.
These adjustments follow the trade-offs described in EA’s FC IQ role and setting documentation. They are troubleshooting ideas, not official presets.
