For a prerecorded video played into YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for a normal two-channel program. Use AAC 5.1 at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz only when the source is genuinely mixed and correctly mapped for 5.1 and the full streaming chain supports it. These are YouTube’s published Live encoder recommendations, applied to prerecorded playback; YouTube does not publish a separate audio bitrate specifically for prerecorded Live sources.

The right settings depend on the channel layout of the finished program and how it reaches YouTube. For the usual two-channel program, choose stereo. Do not raise the bitrate simply because the video is prerecorded: YouTube’s Live encoder guidance gives a stereo recommendation, not a special higher value for prerecorded material. YouTube’s Live encoder settings list the following audio recommendations.

Live workflow Program layout AAC sample rate YouTube-recommended audio bitrate
RTMP or RTMPS ingestion Stereo (2.0) 44.1 kHz 128 Kbps
RTMP or RTMPS ingestion 5.1 surround 48 kHz 384 Kbps
HLS ingestion 5.1 surround 48 kHz 384 Kbps

The values are YouTube configuration recommendations, not proof that a higher bitrate improves the delivered sound. For HLS 5.1, YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as supported codecs; this article focuses on AAC. YouTube’s 5.1 Live guidance describes the protocol and layout requirements.

Stereo: the normal choice

For music, gameplay, commentary, or other programs intended as a conventional two-channel mix, set the encoder to AAC, stereo, 44.1 kHz, and 128 Kbps. Confirm that the playback file and encoder are actually sending two channels; selecting “stereo” in an encoder does not repair an incorrectly routed source.

5.1: only for a real surround mix

Use 5.1 only if the program has a proper six-channel mix, the channel assignment remains correct through playback and encoding, and the ingestion method supports it. For YouTube Live 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, AAC is required; use 48 kHz and the 384 Kbps recommendation. YouTube describes 5.1 as front left, center, front right, surround left, surround right, and low-frequency effects. It does not publish a universal downmix matrix, so do not assume an arbitrary multichannel source will be converted as intended.

Choose the channel layout from the actual mix

YouTube Live supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 input. Other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo, so do not send an unusual multichannel layout expecting YouTube to preserve it or produce a predictable downmix. YouTube warns that other channel configurations can result in unreliable stereo conversion.

  • Use stereo for a standard two-channel finished program and for a source that has already been mixed down to two channels.
  • Use 5.1 only when all six channels carry the intended surround mix and remain in the correct order throughout the chain.
  • Do not choose 5.1 just because a source file has more than two channels. The channel count alone does not establish that it is a valid 5.1 mix.

YouTube names OBS and Videon EdgeCaster among encoders known to be compatible with Live 5.1. This is a compatibility listing, not an endorsement or a guarantee for every version, configuration, protocol, or playback workflow.

RTMP 5.1 and stream-key setup

YouTube says its automatic 5.1 detection and production rely on creating a stream key with manual resolution settings turned off. If you are configuring 5.1, check the current instructions in YouTube Live Control Room while creating or selecting the key, and confirm that the key and encoder are set for the intended ingestion workflow. A valid AAC setting alone cannot compensate for a channel map or key configuration that does not match the stream.

Do not confuse Live settings with video-upload settings

If you are uploading a finished file as a regular YouTube video—not playing it into a Live stream—use YouTube’s upload guidance instead. For uploads, YouTube recommends 48 kHz and lists 384 Kbps for stereo and 512 Kbps for 5.1; its listed upload audio codecs are AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. Those upload recommendations are not the settings for RTMP/RTMPS Live ingestion. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance covers the separate workflow.

Preflight checklist for prerecorded playback

  1. Identify the workflow. Confirm that the video is being sent as a Live stream, rather than uploaded as a normal video. Use the Live settings above for Live ingestion.
  2. Verify the source mix. Check the playback file and playout chain. Use stereo for a normal two-channel program; select 5.1 only when the source mix and channel mapping are genuinely 5.1.
  3. Set AAC parameters. For Live stereo, set 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For Live 5.1, set 384 Kbps and 48 kHz.
  4. Check the protocol and stream key. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC and verify the key configuration against YouTube’s current 5.1 instructions. HLS supports additional 5.1 codecs, but AAC remains an option.
  5. Test the real setup. Send a representative stream with both audio and motion, then check Live stream health before relying on it for an event. YouTube recommends testing before starting a Live stream. Its encoder guidance and Live API health messages identify issues such as unsupported codecs, excessive audio bitrate, and unsupported channel counts.

Troubleshooting audio problems

  • YouTube reports an unsupported channel count: inspect the encoder output and set it to mono, stereo, or supported 5.1 rather than an arbitrary multichannel layout.
  • 5.1 becomes stereo or sounds incorrectly placed: verify the six-channel source mapping and the encoder’s channel order, then check the stream-key settings and ingestion protocol. YouTube does not publish a universal downmix matrix.
  • The stream health warns about audio bitrate: confirm that the encoder is using the recommendation for the selected Live layout—128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1—and that the stream is not being confused with an upload workflow.
  • The encoder or protocol rejects 5.1: for RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube Live 5.1 requires AAC. If the encoder, key, or full path cannot carry a supported 5.1 stream, use a valid stereo mix rather than sending an unsupported layout.
  • The stream sounds wrong despite matching the listed settings: test the actual playback file and chain. Bitrate and sample rate do not establish that the source mix, routing, or channel assignment is correct.

YouTube’s published guidance does not specify a special AAC bitrate for prerecorded playback sent to Live, a universal loudness target, a downmix coefficient matrix, or a guarantee that every playback device will reproduce 5.1. The settings here apply its general Live ingestion recommendations to this prerecorded Live workflow; the actual encoder, protocol, stream key, and channel map still need a representative test.
