There is no single best PlayStation action RPG for everyone: the right match depends on what you want to repeat from a game you already enjoy. Pick Dragon’s Dogma 2 for fantasy exploration and flexible vocations, Rise of the Ronin for historical samurai combat and adjustable difficulty, or Granblue Fantasy: Relink for real-time party action and co-op. These are feature-based matches, not a definitive quality ranking.

Choose by the experience you want

What you want more of Best match from this shortlist Why it fits
Fantasy exploration with flexible combat roles and a party Dragon’s Dogma 2 Its official PlayStation description highlights travel across a fantasy world, selectable vocations, and a customizable Pawn party.
Historical Japanese action, weapon variety, and story decisions Rise of the Ronin Its PlayStation page describes a 19th-century Japan setting, close-quarters weapons and period firearms, story-shaping choices, and adjustable difficulty.
Real-time party combat or cooperative play Granblue Fantasy: Relink PlayStation’s editorial describes a four-character party, real-time combat, solo play, and co-op for up to four players.
Challenging fantasy exploration Elden Ring It is a possible exploration-led match, but the available official-page information here does not establish detailed mechanics for comparison.

“Similar” can mean different things: combat feel, world structure, party play, setting, or challenge. The feature match matters more than how often a title appears on recommendation lists.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: fantasy exploration and flexible vocations

Choose Dragon’s Dogma 2 if you want to explore a fantasy world while switching among distinct combat roles. PlayStation calls it “A single-player, narrative-driven action-RPG that lets players choose their own experience.” Its page describes travel across Vermund and Battahl and lists vocations including Fighter, Archer, Thief, Mage, and Trickster.

The party system is built around Pawns rather than co-op. You can customize a main Pawn and hire two additional Pawns, including online Pawns created by other players. The official description frames the game as single-player, so hiring those characters should not be mistaken for playing alongside other people.

#1 Best Overall
Days Gone - Playstation 4
  • Harsh Open World: Using the power of PlayStation 4 and unreal engine 4, days one offers an incredibly realistic and detailed open world experience. But be careful— day and night cycles, all affect gameplay and enemy behavior
  • Brutal Sandbox Combat: Perfect your gameplay with an endless combination of strategy and play in every situation. Craft customized items using pieces and parts found in the field, from brutal melee weapons to traps and more
  • Compelling Story: At its core, days gone is about survivors and what makes them human: desperation, loss, madness, betrayal, friendship, brotherhood, regret, love and hope. It’s about how hope never dies
  • Play as Deacon St.John, a bounty hunter facing a brutal struggle for survival while searching for a reason to live

Combat descriptions emphasize enemies responding to tactics, weaknesses that can be exploited, and using the environment. That makes it a plausible fit if you like experimenting with roles and bringing AI companions into encounters.

Rise of the Ronin: historical combat and adjustable challenge

For a historical setting rather than fantasy, Rise of the Ronin is set in 19th-century Japan. PlayStation describes it as a “combat-focused open-world action RPG” and highlights close-quarters weapons, period firearms, and decisions and alliances that affect how the story unfolds.

Rank #2
Lords of the Fallen Standard Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Overhauled Character Creator – Create more lifelike characters with improved facial detail, body shapes, and visual fidelity
  • Shared-Progression Cross-Play Cooperative Play – Both players now save all main story progress as long as they’re on the same “New Game” and have defeated a similar number of main bosses within one. Both players retains all loot, 100 percent vigor, and can revive each other in all online sessions.
  • Free Friend’s Pass – Invite any friend to join your adventure in online co-op even if they don’t own the game. Friends keep loot and character progress, plus get full offline access to the tutorial and character creator
  • Revamped Combat and Movement – V2.0 adds smoother animations, better weapon response, refined lock-on, improved evasions, and new grievous strike prompts

Its official page says difficulty modes can be changed at any time, which makes it a practical option if you want some control over challenge rather than a fixed difficulty choice. Story missions can also be played online with up to three players; PlayStation Plus is required for online play, according to the same page. Those details make it the clearest match here for someone seeking historical action with both story choices and online mission play.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink: party-led real-time action

If the appeal of an action RPG is controlling a capable party in fast-moving encounters, consider Granblue Fantasy: Relink. PlayStation’s editorial describes a fully 3D action RPG with a four-character party, unique character skills, real-time combat, and loot. It supports solo play as well as co-op for up to four players.

Rank #3
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - PlayStation 4
  • IN THE NEAR FUTURE, MANKIND STANDS DIVIDED - Explore diverse locations and discover a near future where humanity's fate, amid the oppression of the mechanically augmented, hangs in the balance
  • HUMAN 2.0 - Become the ultimate augmented covert agent as you choose from a vast array of weapons and augmentations, customizing them to your desired specifications
  • MEANINGFUL CHOICE AND CONSEQUENCES - Experience the renowned world of Deus Ex, where your decisions and actions play a crucial role in determining the game’s outcome
  • BREACH – innovative live game mode included for free; Offers an arcade approach providing a connected puzzle shooter experience; Rewards earned allow you to face the increasing difficulty of the game

This is the shortlist’s most direct fit for party-based action and cooperative play. The feature description does not establish how it compares in quality with the other games, so use the party and co-op details—not a supposed universal ranking—to decide whether it matches your preferences.

Elden Ring: a possible exploration-led alternative

Elden Ring may suit players looking for challenging fantasy exploration, but the official PlayStation page available for this comparison did not provide substantive feature text. That means it is not possible here to make a detailed, sourced comparison of its combat, progression, or structure with the three games above.

Rank #4
THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER: Day 1 Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
  • Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
  • Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
  • Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.

Its presence in recommendation lists is not evidence that it is objectively the best. Check the current PlayStation listing for your region and consider whether its specific features match what you want before choosing it.
