Marvel Rivals had a visible cosmetic-mod scene in early 2025, but no reliable figures establish how many mods, downloads, or users it had. More importantly, NetEase’s published rules warn against using “game modifiers” and say confirmed violations can lead to permanent bans. Players should not assume that a skin-only mod is exempt.
How popular were Marvel Rivals mods?
PC Gamer described the early cosmetic-mod scene as “surprisingly lively” in January 2025, reporting on players creating skins and other cosmetic additions. That is evidence of an active-looking scene, not a measure of its size. The sources reviewed do not establish a mod count, download total, or number of players using mods.

Massively Overpowered reported that players noticed mods stopped working after the Season 1 launch in January 2025. The same coverage discussed broader game and community activity, but those figures were not measurements of mod adoption. Are Marvel Rivals mods bannable?
NetEase’s May 25, 2026 announcement urges players not to “download, purchase, distribute, or use any cheats, scripts, game modifiers, or illicit third-party tools.” It says confirmed cheats, illicit assist programs, or client tampering can result in permanent bans; severe cases may also receive device or IP bans. The notice does not state an exception for cosmetic-only mods, so players should not treat a skin replacement as officially safe.

Earlier reports likewise described NetEase warning that modifying game files carried ban risk. PC Gamer relayed the company’s position via IGN, while Massively Overpowered reported a similar warning made to Polygon. Cosmetic mods, config changes, and cheats are not the same thing
The word “mod” can describe different changes. A cosmetic skin replacement is not the same as a config alteration intended to change performance or visibility, and neither is the same as cheating software or behavior that disrupts a match. Their purposes and effects differ, but NetEase’s warning includes game modifiers broadly and offers no published safe category for players to rely on.

That distinction matters for competitive integrity. PC Gamer reported in August 2026 on players manipulating config files to cancel matches without consequence, alongside earlier uses of config changes for performance or visual advantages. Does an anti-cheat bypass make mods safe?
No. NetEase says its anti-cheat starts alongside the game client and “cannot be disabled independently.” It also says the launch parameter discussed in the announcement only hides the anti-cheat pop-up; it does not disable protection. What to do if you suspect cheating or receive a penalty
- Report suspected anomalies: NetEase asks players to report suspicious behavior through its official channels.
- Appeal a penalty you believe is unjust: The company directs affected players to official customer support.
- Do not rely on anecdotal detection claims: Neither a mod appearing to work nor another player avoiding a penalty establishes that its use is allowed.
