The best lower-cost alternative depends on which games you want to play. For Nintendo games on a tighter budget, the Nintendo Switch Lite is the clearest fit—but it is a handheld-only, earlier-generation system, not a Switch 2 equivalent. For a PC game library, consider the Steam Deck OLED; the Lenovo Legion Go S and ASUS ROG Ally X are alternatives when their specific configuration and software fit your needs.
Choose by game library first
A cheaper handheld cannot replace Switch 2 access to Nintendo exclusives. TechRadar’s 2026 guide recommends Switch 2 for players who want those games and points PC-oriented players toward Steam Deck. Start by checking whether the titles you care about are available on the device you plan to buy, rather than comparing hardware specifications alone. TechRadar’s 2026 handheld console guide is the source for that platform distinction.
Best options at a glance
| Device | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Lite | Lower-cost portable Nintendo gaming | TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists $199.99 / £200. It is not a Switch 2 equivalent. |
| Steam Deck OLED | Playing a Steam library portably | TechRadar lists a 7.4-inch OLED display, 512GB or 1TB storage, and 2–8 hours of battery life; game compatibility varies. |
| Lenovo Legion Go S | PC handheld gaming with a choice of configurations and operating systems | Compare the exact model, operating system, memory, and storage; prices vary across versions. |
| ASUS ROG Ally X | Windows-based gaming and access to multiple PC storefronts | A premium option rather than a default budget pick. |
Switch Lite pricing and Steam Deck OLED specifications above are from TechRadar’s guide, published July 21, 2026. Lenovo’s pages describe distinct Legion Go S models, while ASUS identifies Ally X as a Windows 11 handheld. Regional prices, inventory, and configurations can change; check the listing for your market before buying.
Nintendo Switch Lite: the lower-cost Nintendo choice
If your priority is Nintendo’s handheld catalog and you can accept an older, handheld-only system, Switch Lite is the most direct lower-cost Nintendo-branded option in the current comparison. TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists it at $199.99 / £200. Those are the guide’s quoted asking prices, not guaranteed live prices in every country or at every retailer. Confirm the current price and game compatibility for the titles you want.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Do not treat the Lite as a less expensive Switch 2: the evidence supports it as a budget portable option, not as an equal-performance replacement. TechRadar advises players who specifically want Nintendo exclusives to choose Switch 2. See its handheld console guide for the recommendation.
Steam Deck OLED: best fit for a Steam library
Steam Deck OLED makes sense if the games you already own—or intend to buy—are on Steam and you want to play them away from a desk. TechRadar lists a 7.4-inch OLED display, 512GB or 1TB of storage, and a battery-life range of 2–8 hours. Treat that battery figure as the guide’s stated range, not a guaranteed runtime: the source does not provide a single condition that applies to every game and use pattern.
Rank #2
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Compatibility is a meaningful trade-off. TechRadar notes that some games run poorly, so check the status of the specific titles you plan to play instead of assuming the entire Steam catalog will work equally well. Its 2026 guide describes Steam Deck as a PC-gaming choice, not a route to Nintendo exclusives.
Lenovo Legion Go S: compare the exact version
“Legion Go S” can refer to materially different configurations and operating-system variants. Lenovo lists a Ryzen Z2 Go version and a SteamOS model; its pages describe configurations up to 32GB of memory and 1TB of storage. Those maximum specifications should not be read as applying to every SKU. Check the listing for the exact operating system, processor, memory, and storage before comparing prices.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
Lenovo presents the SteamOS model as having access to the Steam ecosystem. Price is configuration-dependent: a Held Games comparison updated October 1, 2026 lists approximately $649–$829 across Legion Go S SteamOS models. That is a secondary-source range across models, not a uniform live-price survey or proof that any specific version is in stock. Consult Lenovo’s Legion Go S product page and its Legion Go S Gen 1 Powered by SteamOS page for model details.
ASUS ROG Ally X: a stretch-budget Windows option
ROG Ally X is worth considering if Windows and access to several PC storefronts matter more than keeping the purchase strictly budget-focused. ASUS identifies the 2024 RC72LA model as a Windows 11 handheld with a Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, up to 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, and up to 2TB of storage. ASUS says it supports Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, GOG, and other storefronts. Check the precise configuration and the games or services you intend to use.
Rank #4
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
TechRadar characterizes Ally X as a premium option, so it is a poor default recommendation for a strict budget. ASUS’s specifications are on the ROG Ally X (2024) RC72LA product page; the comparison source discussed below lists prices for a differently named ROG Xbox Ally X, so those figures should not be treated as Ally X pricing.

There is no single reliable “cheapest” device across unspecified countries and configurations. The available price figures are not a like-for-like live survey: TechRadar quotes Switch Lite at $199.99 / £200, while a Held Games comparison updated October 1, 2026 lists approximately $789 for Steam Deck OLED, $649–$829 for Legion Go S SteamOS, and $999 for ROG Xbox Ally X. The Held Games figures are secondary-source comparison prices across products or models, not confirmation of current retailer stock or an apples-to-apples price check. In particular, do not use its ROG Xbox Ally X figure as the price of the ASUS ROG Ally X discussed above.

Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- List the games you want to play. Confirm that each is available on the platform and check compatibility where relevant.
- Set your budget in your local currency. Compare current retailer prices rather than assuming a guide’s quoted figure is still available.
- Match the configuration. For Legion Go S, identify the operating system, memory, and storage; for other models, verify the exact SKU and storage.
- Consider how you will use it. The Switch Lite is handheld-only; Steam Deck OLED has a 7.4-inch display according to TechRadar. Choose based on the portability and screen experience you want.
- Check the trade-offs for your games. Steam Deck compatibility can vary, and a battery-life figure is not a guarantee of runtime for every game.
