If the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is unavailable, choose among three sensible paths: keep checking for the themed console, buy a standard Switch 2 and add the official Zelda case, or buy the older Tears of the Kingdom OLED model for its built-in Zelda design. The right choice depends on whether you value the anniversary hardware, current-generation compatibility, or the lowest-risk way to get Zelda styling.
Quick recommendation
For most buyers, a standard Switch 2 plus the Zelda 40th Anniversary carrying case and screen protector is the best substitute. You get current-generation hardware and official Zelda styling without waiting for a limited console release. It is not the same collector item: the Zelda design is on the case, not on the console or Joy-Con 2.

Keep checking authorized retailers if the anniversary console itself is the reason you are buying. Choose the Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch only if the Zelda appearance matters more than owning a Switch 2 and you accept previous-generation hardware. A plain standard Switch 2 is the simplest option when performance and access to the newer platform matter more than decoration.

- Exact artwork: continue looking for the 40th Anniversary Switch 2.
- New generation plus Zelda styling: pair a local standard Switch 2 with the official case.
- Zelda hardware at a lower generation: compare the Tears of the Kingdom OLED, new or used.
- Current platform only: buy the standard Switch 2 without themed accessories.

What the sold-out edition actually includes
Nintendo announced the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition for October 29, 2026. Its Triforce motifs appear on the console, dock and Joy-Con 2, making it a themed hardware design rather than a standard system with a bundled skin.
The announcement also covers two separate accessories launching October 29: a Zelda 40th Anniversary Pro Controller with a display stand, and a carrying case with a screen protector. Neither accessory turns a standard Switch 2 into the anniversary console.
Nintendo’s announcement states, “This product does not come with a game.” The console purchase therefore does not include a copy of a Zelda title unless a retailer separately creates a bundle. Do not pay a premium assuming a game is in the box.

The same distinction applies to listings that combine several products in one photograph. A picture showing the console, Pro Controller and case does not prove that all three are included. Read the contents list and model number, and check whether the listing is for the console package or for one accessory.
Japanese model and published prices
The Japanese edition is a Japanese-language system intended for Japan. Nintendo lists a suggested retail price of 62,980 yen including tax for that edition only. It is not a US, UK, euro-area or worldwide price, and importing it can create regional-language, warranty and account-compatibility questions.
| Product | Japanese suggested retail price (tax included) | Release date | What is included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 edition | 62,980 yen | October 29, 2026 | Themed Switch 2 console, dock and Joy-Con 2; no game |
| Zelda 40th Anniversary Pro Controller | 12,980 yen | October 29, 2026 | Controller and display stand; separate purchase |
| Zelda 40th Anniversary carrying case and screen protector | 3,980 yen | October 29, 2026 | Case and screen protector; separate purchase |
These figures are Nintendo’s Japanese suggested prices, not live local prices. Check the retailer serving your country for the correct regional model, taxes, delivery charges and warranty terms. Currency conversion alone will not tell you what an imported unit will cost after shipping, taxes or a retailer’s markup.
The 3,980-yen case price is useful as a reference for the accessory route, but it should not be copied into a US, UK or other regional buying guide as though it were a local price. Likewise, 62,980 yen does not establish the price of the console in another market.
Alternative 1: keep checking for the exact anniversary console
This is the only route that delivers the themed console, dock and Joy-Con 2. It is the best fit for a collector who would regret settling for an accessory-only solution.
What the dated stock leads mean
The official US Nintendo Store search result showed the anniversary console and matching controller sold out on October 13, 2026. That is a point-in-time result, not a permanent availability statement.

A September report said Nintendo Store UK and Ireland product pages would announce replenishment through the Nintendo Store app. An October 9 report from GamesRadar+ said select US Best Buy stores expected limited quantities at November 5 events tied to the launch of Ocarina of Time. These reports identify places and dates worth checking; they do not guarantee stock when you arrive or open a listing.
Because the leads are regional, a US event does not establish UK stock, and a UK or Ireland app notice does not establish availability elsewhere. Use the Nintendo channel and retailer serving your own country rather than relying on an overseas product page.

A practical restock routine
- Identify the Nintendo Store or authorized retailer serving your region. Do not assume a Japanese, US or UK listing can be substituted safely for your local model.
- Install or check the Nintendo Store app where Nintendo has said replenishment notices will appear, particularly for UK and Ireland pages.
- Check the retailer’s product page and store inventory shortly before traveling. A dated report or search snippet can become stale, and limited event quantities may sell out quickly.
- Confirm the exact item name. The console, Pro Controller and carrying case are separate products, and a controller listing is not evidence that console stock has returned.
- Before paying, verify seller, region, language configuration, warranty coverage, delivery date and whether the listing is new rather than resale stock.
- Save the product page or confirmation showing the model and included contents. This gives you something to compare if a marketplace listing changes its title or photograph.
If a store advertises an event allocation, check whether the store itself, rather than a third-party marketplace seller, is handling the sale. Also confirm opening time, purchase limits and collection requirements directly with that retailer. None of those details is established by a dated report, so do not travel solely on an old article or search snippet.
If you find a local unit at a normal regional price and the themed hardware is your priority, this option avoids the compromises attached to the other alternatives. If repeated checks consume time or the price rises sharply on resale markets, compare the practical value of the next two choices rather than assuming scarcity makes a premium worthwhile. No verified resale-price benchmark establishes what a premium should be.
Alternative 2: standard Switch 2 with the Zelda carrying case
Pair a locally sold standard Switch 2 with Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary carrying case and screen protector. The case is scheduled for October 29, 2026, and supplies official Zelda styling while protecting the screen and carrying the console.
What this solution gives you
- Current-generation Switch 2 hardware and its compatible-game library.
- An official Zelda 40th Anniversary case and screen protector.
- A lower dependence on limited-edition console allocations.
- The option to buy the console and accessory separately as each becomes available.
- A clear separation between the hardware decision and the cosmetic accessory decision.
What it does not give you
- The Triforce design on the Switch 2 console, dock or Joy-Con 2.
- The collector value of a factory-themed console package.
- An included Zelda game; the anniversary accessory is not a software bundle.
- The anniversary Pro Controller or its display stand, unless you purchase that separate product.
This is the strongest all-round replacement when you want new hardware now but still want a visible Zelda theme. Check the case’s regional listing and fit for your Switch 2 model before ordering, especially if a retailer is selling imported accessories.
The case and screen protector are one announced accessory package, while the Pro Controller is another. If you want the controller as well, budget for a separate purchase and verify that the listing includes the display stand. Buying the case does not provide the themed dock or Joy-Con 2 from the anniversary console.
Availability can be staggered: a standard Switch 2 may be in stock before the October 29 accessory launch, or the case may sell out separately. You can still make the hardware purchase first, but do not describe the setup as a 40th Anniversary Edition unless the console itself is the themed model.
Alternative 3: Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch
The Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch delivers Zelda artwork on the hardware itself, but it is an original Nintendo Switch OLED, not a Switch 2. Nintendo’s 2023 investor presentation identifies the Zelda-themed OLED model as an option for first-time buyers and people seeking an additional or replacement console. Nintendo released it on April 29, 2023.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Why choose it
- The Zelda design is built into the console and dock rather than confined to a case.
- It can be a sensible choice when a previous-generation system meets your game needs.
- New-old-stock or used units may be easier to find than the anniversary Switch 2, depending on your market.
- It may suit a buyer who wants a second or replacement original Switch rather than a current-generation upgrade.
Trade-offs to check before buying
- You are buying previous-generation hardware, so compare the games you intend to play with Switch 2 requirements and enhancements.
- For a used unit, inspect the screen, Joy-Con rails, sticks, dock, charger, game-card slot and battery behavior, and confirm that all advertised accessories are present.
- For a used console, ask whether the original box, dock and charger are included and whether the seller offers a return window. Missing parts can erase an apparent saving.
- Compare the seller’s condition, return window and warranty with the price of a new or used unit. The older model’s current local price is not established by Nintendo’s 2023 launch information.
- Do not assume that every Switch game runs identically on Switch 2 or that every Switch 2 feature applies to the OLED model.
Pick this route when the Zelda look is non-negotiable and you are comfortable staying on the original Switch generation. It is a design-first purchase, not a like-for-like technical replacement for the anniversary Switch 2.

The official themed model is the one with Zelda artwork on the console and dock; an added skin should not be priced as Nintendo’s limited hardware.
Alternative 4: standard Switch 2 without Zelda trim
A regular Switch 2 is the cleanest decision if you primarily want the current platform and can live without anniversary decoration. It removes the wait for a limited design and avoids the generation compromise of the older OLED model.
Nintendo Support says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible. Check the specific titles you own or plan to buy instead of treating compatibility as universal. A standard Switch 2 also uses its own accessories and storage requirements, so audit your existing equipment before assuming everything transfers.
This option is also the easiest to explain to someone buying a first console: select the local Switch 2 model, then add games and storage after confirming each title’s support. It does not provide Zelda decoration by itself, but you can add an official case later if that accessory becomes available.
Side-by-side comparison
| Choice | Generation | Where the Zelda styling appears | Game included? | Regional and condition considerations | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40th Anniversary Switch 2 edition | Switch 2 | Console, dock and Joy-Con 2 | No | Japanese edition is Japanese-language and Japan-only; local stock varies | Collectors who want the exact themed hardware |
| Standard Switch 2 + anniversary case | Switch 2 | Official carrying case and screen protector | No | Buy the console and accessory for your local region; usually new retail hardware | Players wanting current hardware and Zelda styling with fewer stock constraints |
| Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch | Original Switch OLED | Console and dock design | Not established as included | Compare supported games; new or used condition and seller protections matter | Buyers prioritizing Zelda hardware appearance over the newest generation |
| Standard Switch 2 | Switch 2 | None beyond your own accessories | No | Choose a local model and verify title compatibility | Players who want the current platform without paying for themed hardware |
The comparison shows why these are not interchangeable bargains. The anniversary console and the standard Switch 2 share a generation, but only one has themed hardware. The OLED has built-in Zelda styling, but it belongs to the earlier generation. The case route changes the appearance without changing the console.
Compatibility and accessory checks
Original Switch controllers
Existing original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. If you rely on handheld use, budget for compatible attached controls rather than assuming an old pair is a physical replacement.
This matters when a used OLED purchase is being considered as an accessory source. A pair of original Joy-Con may work wirelessly with Switch 2, but that does not make an old console dock or an old pair of controllers a complete Switch 2 handheld setup.
Original Switch dock
The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Keep the dock with an older console or sell it only after confirming that you no longer need it; it cannot serve as a low-cost second dock for the new system.

Storage cards
Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for game storage, not conventional microSD cards. Check the card type before reusing storage from an original Switch or buying a cheap conventional card. A card that was suitable for an original Switch should not automatically be treated as suitable for Switch 2 game storage.
Game compatibility
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, with some exceptions and titles that may not be fully compatible. Look up each important game in Nintendo’s current support information before choosing a console based on an existing library. This is especially important if the older OLED is being compared with Switch 2 for a particular game collection.
Imported Japanese hardware
The Japanese anniversary model is explicitly Japanese-language and Japan-only. Do not assume an imported unit has the same regional setup, warranty or suitability as a locally sold system. Check the product details, account expectations, power information and seller support before considering an import.

They are useful for identifying the products and their relative position in Japan, but they do not establish a local street price anywhere else.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor every alternative, calculate the complete purchase rather than comparing console headlines. A standard Switch 2 plus case is two products. A used OLED may require missing Joy-Con, a dock or a charger. An imported anniversary console may add shipping, taxes and limited warranty support. A retailer’s claimed “bundle” may also omit the game you expected, because Nintendo’s anniversary console does not include one.
Do not use an unverified resale listing as a price guide. The available facts do not establish a normal resale premium, a guaranteed discount for the OLED or a future restock quantity. Compare only listings that show the seller, region, condition, return terms and complete contents.
How to choose by priority
If the console artwork is the whole point
Continue checking local authorized retailers and official regional Nintendo channels for the anniversary edition. Do not substitute the case if owning the themed dock and Joy-Con 2 is what makes the purchase worthwhile.
If you want Zelda style and the newest platform
Buy a standard local Switch 2 and add the 40th Anniversary case and screen protector when available. This keeps the generation choice separate from the decoration choice.

If you simply need a Switch 2
Choose the standard model and spend the difference on games or storage that you will actually use. The anniversary edition adds appearance, not a bundled game according to Nintendo’s announcement.
If you are buying a second console
Decide whether the second system must run Switch 2 software. If not, Nintendo’s description of the Tears of the Kingdom OLED as an additional or replacement option may fit, provided the games you need are supported and the condition is acceptable. If it must be a current-generation system, compare a standard Switch 2 with the themed edition instead.
Buying checklist before you pay
- Confirm that the listing is a Switch 2, a Switch OLED or an accessory; similar Zelda names cover different products.
- Check the region, system language, power requirements, warranty and return policy.
- Confirm whether the box contains a game. The 40th Anniversary console does not.
- For imported Japanese hardware, verify that the Japanese-language configuration suits you and that local support is acceptable.
- For used Tears of the Kingdom OLED hardware, test or document the console, dock, Joy-Con, charger, display and battery condition.
- For Switch 2 storage, buy microSD Express rather than a conventional microSD card.
- Do not treat a dated stock report as a live inventory guarantee; recheck the retailer immediately before ordering or traveling.
- Make sure a case listing includes the screen protector if that is part of the advertised package, and do not confuse it with the separate Pro Controller.
- Check the seller’s return process before opening a used or imported unit, particularly when regional language or warranty support is uncertain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 include a Zelda game?
No. Nintendo’s September 8, 2026 announcement explicitly says, “This product does not come with a game.” Treat any game as a separate purchase unless a retailer clearly creates and describes its own bundle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the Japanese price of the anniversary console?
Nintendo lists 62,980 yen including tax for the Japanese edition. That is a Japan-only suggested retail price, not a US, UK or worldwide price.
Is the Japanese anniversary model suitable for buyers outside Japan?
It is described as a Japanese-language system for Japan only. Check regional setup, warranty and seller support before considering an import; do not assume it matches a locally sold model.
Can I make a standard Switch 2 look like the anniversary edition with the case?
The official case and screen protector add Zelda styling and protection, but they do not reproduce the Triforce design on the console, dock or Joy-Con 2 and do not create the collector edition.
Will original Switch Joy-Con and docks work with Switch 2?
Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly but cannot attach to Switch 2. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
Can I reuse a normal microSD card in Switch 2?
Nintendo says Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for game storage, not conventional microSD cards. Check the card type before buying or reusing one.
Is the Tears of the Kingdom OLED a Switch 2?
No. It is an original Nintendo Switch OLED released April 29, 2023. Choose it only after comparing the games you need, the new or used condition and the local price.
Where might the anniversary console return?
The official US Nintendo Store result was sold out on October 13, 2026. A September report said UK and Ireland replenishment notices would appear through the Nintendo Store app, while an October 9 GamesRadar+ report described expected limited quantities at select US Best Buy stores during November 5 Ocarina of Time events. These are dated leads, not guarantees, so recheck the retailer serving your region.
The Bottom Line
If you want the exact Triforce console, dock and Joy-Con 2, keep checking authorized local retailers and official Nintendo channels, but treat every dated stock lead as temporary. For most people, a local standard Switch 2 plus the official 40th Anniversary case and screen protector is the best balance of current-generation compatibility and Zelda styling. Choose the Tears of the Kingdom OLED only when its built-in Zelda design outweighs the fact that it is previous-generation hardware, and choose a plain Switch 2 when the platform matters more than the theme.
