Anthem has no playable offline mode, and there is no single game that reproduces its flying Javelin suits, loot chase and cooperative missions in one package. For the closest squad-action replacement, start with Helldivers 2; choose Warframe for years of collection and build progression, or Destiny 2 for free entry, clans and broad social features.
What happened to Anthem?
EA and BioWare announced on July 3, 2025 that Anthem would be sunset on January 12, 2026. That date has passed. The game was built as an online-only title, so shutting down its servers removed the only way to authenticate, enter the world and run missions.

EA’s accompanying FAQ is unambiguous: “Anthem was designed to be an online-only title so once the servers go offline, the game will no longer be playable.” Installing the client, owning a disc or having previously unlocked content cannot create an offline fallback. If you are looking for something to play now, treat Anthem as a closed service rather than a game that can be recovered through a settings change.

EA’s wider service policy says older online services are often retired when usage falls to “typically fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles.” That is a policy-level guideline, not a published measurement of Anthem’s final population. The important distinction for a replacement search is architectural: some retired games continue to work offline, while an online-only design does not.
How to choose an Anthem replacement
Anthem combined several appeals that are rarely offered together. You could coordinate a small team, select a loadout, pursue equipment and move through a science-fiction world with powered suits. The alternatives below divide those strengths rather than copying all of them.
- Co-op structure: Do you want a tightly defined squad, a larger social network, or both?
- Progression: Is the goal a long collection-and-build project, a seasonal service, or mission-focused loadouts?
- Platform reach: Can your group play on the same systems, and do you need cross-save?
- Purchase model: Are you comfortable buying the base game, or do you need a free starting path?
- Service dependence: Would another online-only game be acceptable after Anthem’s shutdown?
Use those questions before choosing a download. A game can be excellent and still be the wrong substitute if it replaces only one part of what you enjoyed.
Helldivers 2: the closest immediate co-op substitute
Why it fits Anthem players
Helldivers 2 is the strongest first recommendation when the memory you want to recreate is coordinated squad combat. Sony describes it as a “frenetic third-person co-operative team shooter” and says you can join with up to three friends. That explicit four-player structure makes it the clearest match for a group that wants to form a team, select equipment and complete objectives together rather than play mostly alone in a shared world.
Its mission-based format also creates a clean replacement loop: assemble a squad, choose a loadout for the operation and cooperate under pressure. Those are the parts of Anthem’s moment-to-moment appeal that transfer most directly. The game is not a mechanical clone, however. It does not reproduce Anthem’s Javelin suits, flight system or open-world traversal, so a player whose priority is movement through a large aerial environment should set expectations accordingly.

Platforms, edition and online requirements
The official product listing names PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox editions. It lists a paid Standard Edition, optional in-game purchases and an online-play requirement. The page does not establish a universal price: storefront pricing, taxes, bundles and promotions vary by region and date, so check the store attached to your platform before buying.

Who should choose it
- Groups of friends who want a defined four-person operation rather than a broad MMO-style hub.
- Players who value teamwork, mission objectives and coordinated loadouts more than collecting hundreds of items.
- Anthem fans who can accept a ground-focused shooter instead of powered flight.
Who should look elsewhere
If your main motivation was experimenting with many frames, weapons and long-term builds, Helldivers 2 may feel too mission-centered. It is also a poor fit if your group cannot agree on an online platform or if you are specifically seeking a free-to-start game. In those cases, Warframe or Destiny 2 addresses the underlying need more directly.

Why it fits Anthem players
Warframe is the better destination for players who treated Anthem as a long-term collection project. Its official site presents an active progression game built around collecting frames and weapons, refining builds and returning for new objectives. The site also promotes recurring Nightwave objectives, Prime Access, a new-player guide and an established store ecosystem. Those signals matter because they show a service designed to support years of engagement rather than a short campaign.
The closest conceptual match is not a specific mission type but the feeling of continually improving a roster. You can approach Warframe as a catalogue to master: unlock additional frames, assemble equipment combinations and tune your builds for different activities. That depth comes with a steeper learning curve than a straightforward squad shooter, so plan to use the official new-player guide instead of judging the game by its first few missions.
Platforms and account continuity
Warframe states that it is available on all platforms and advertises cross-platform save. Cross-platform save is especially valuable if you are leaving Anthem because it lets progression follow your account rather than locking a long project to one machine. Confirm the current account-linking rules before committing to a platform change; the exact process and supported combinations can evolve as the service changes.

Free entry and optional purchases
Warframe offers free entry with optional purchases. Its official site exposes Prime Access, in-game transactions and merchandise, so the cost of participation depends on how quickly you want to acquire items and which optional offerings you choose. No single current regional price is established here. Start without spending, learn the upgrade and trading systems, then decide whether an optional purchase solves a problem you actually have.

Warframe is a progression substitute, not an Anthem flight simulator. Its movement, mission structure and presentation differ substantially. Someone searching for the sensation of launching a Javelin and gliding over an open landscape may find the mechanical change too large. Someone searching for a huge build space, a persistent account and regular objectives may find the difference worthwhile.
Destiny 2: the broadest social and free-entry option
Why it fits Anthem players
Destiny 2 is the most flexible recommendation when your priority is joining an established shooter community without buying a complete package on day one. Bungie’s official site provides a “Play for Free” path and links to clans, Fireteam Finder, cross-save, collections and purchase options. Those tools cover different needs: a clan supports a persistent group, Fireteam Finder helps assemble a team, and cross-save reduces the risk of being tied to one platform.
Its seasonal and expansion-based structure is both a strength and a caveat. There is a substantial ecosystem to enter, but the available activities and bundles change. Treat the free path as an evaluation period. Before purchasing an expansion or bundle, read the current store description and confirm which campaigns, seasons or activities it includes.
Platform access and cross-save
Bungie provides multiple platform sign-in paths and cross-save. The source material does not establish one fixed platform list or guarantee that every item transfers between every account configuration, so use Bungie’s current account settings when linking systems. Cross-save preserves access to eligible characters and progression; it does not necessarily make every separately purchased entitlement available on every platform.

Costs and content planning
Destiny 2 has a free-to-play entry point plus optional purchases, passes and expansions. Because the offer changes over time, there is no responsible single price or bundle recommendation for every reader. Decide first whether you need only the free activities, a current season, a particular expansion or a complete collection, then compare the platform-specific listings at checkout.
Who should choose it
- Players who want clans, matchmaking tools and a mature social shooter ecosystem.
- Groups spread across platforms that need cross-save and flexible sign-in.
- Readers who want to test a game for free before buying additional content.
Choose another option if you want a self-contained purchase with a simple content boundary or if seasonal resets and changing expansion bundles are frustrating. Destiny 2 rewards regular participation, but that service model is not identical to Anthem’s.

If coordinated missions mattered most
Start with Helldivers 2. Its four-player limit gives your group a clear party size and a focused reason to communicate. Expect a different combat and movement model, and buy only after confirming that every member can access the same regional edition and online service.
If collecting gear and refining builds mattered most
Start with Warframe. Use the new-player guide, set a first progression goal and resist buying optional packages until you understand how frames, weapons and upgrades fit together. The payoff is a long-running account project rather than a direct recreation of Anthem’s aerial combat.

If finding people to play with mattered most
Start with Destiny 2. Create or join a clan, test Fireteam Finder and check cross-save before moving characters between platforms. Read the current expansion and season descriptions before spending, because the most useful purchase depends on the activities you want now.
If you need to spend nothing first
Try Warframe or Destiny 2. Both expose free entry with optional spending. Warframe is the stronger free starting point for collection depth; Destiny 2 is the stronger choice for clans and a mature social shooter environment.
If you want the smallest commitment from a fixed group
Helldivers 2’s defined squad format is easier to understand than a large live-service catalogue. The trade-off is the upfront purchase and the absence of Anthem’s flight-based exploration.
Online-service risk after Anthem
Every recommendation here depends on online infrastructure, so none eliminates the risk that prompted this search. The practical lesson from Anthem is not that every service will close soon; it is that online dependence determines what happens when a publisher retires a game.
Before investing time or money, check five things:
- Architecture: Is there an offline mode, or is the game fundamentally server-dependent?
- Account access: Can you use the same account and progression on another supported platform?
- Content ownership: Which purchases are permanent entitlements, and which are seasonal or service-bound?
- Community tools: Are there clans, matchmaking or friend systems that help you replace a lost group?
- Exit options: If the service changes, can you still access a campaign, local saves or another mode?
EA’s policy explicitly notes that some retired games remain playable offline depending on their design. That exception cannot be applied to Anthem, and it should not be assumed for any future online title without a clear offline statement from its publisher.
A practical move from Anthem to a new game
- Write down your non-negotiable: choose squad size, movement, build depth, social tools or free entry as the first filter.
- Match your platform: verify the current store listing for your region and confirm that your friends can use the same edition or cross-play arrangement.
- Use the lowest-risk entry: take Destiny 2’s free path or Warframe’s free start when you are uncertain; buy Helldivers 2 only when the four-player format fits your group.
- Set one first-week goal: complete a small set of missions, unlock an initial frame or test a clan and Fireteam workflow. Do not buy a large bundle before you know which loop you enjoy.
- Check account continuity: enable cross-save or account linking where supported before changing platforms, and keep your login details secure.
- Budget for live content: treat passes, expansions, Prime Access and in-game purchases as optional decisions made after sampling the core game.
The best replacement is the one that preserves the activity you actually miss, not the one that shares Anthem’s science-fiction label. For most former pilots, that means Helldivers 2 for immediate co-op, Warframe for a deep account to grow, or Destiny 2 for a free and highly social entry point.
