Best Alternatives to Beyond These Stars for Creature-Based or Moving-City Building

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Wandering Village is the closest alternative to Beyond These Stars: you build a settlement on a living creature and must keep that host alive. Choose Airborne Kingdom or Airborne Empire if you want a city that travels without a biological host, and choose Before We Leave for a gentler sci-fi builder from the same developer as Beyond These Stars.

What makes an alternative actually comparable?

Beyond These Stars is built around a very specific fantasy. Its residents, called Peeps, construct a city on Kewa, a sentient space whale travelling through the universe. The city is not simply mobile; it is physically attached to a living host whose condition and cooperation matter. Alongside construction, you manage production lines and supply chains, explore planets, meet alien societies and communicate with Kewa. That combination makes ordinary city builders a poor substitute even when they include exploration or science-fiction buildings.

The game launched on October 16, 2026, according to the publisher’s launch release. That release reported 250,000 wishlists before launch and listed PC versions for Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store. Those details matter when comparing alternatives: some recommendations below are established games with complete content, while others are newer or adjacent concepts whose release status can change.

  • Do you need a biological host? Only The Wandering Village matches the city-on-a-creature structure directly.
  • Do you mainly want a city that moves? The Airborne Kingdom games replace an animal with a flying engineered city.
  • Is a calm science-fiction settlement enough? Before We Leave keeps the approachable tone but drops the whale and host relationship.
  • Would an unusual setting matter more than identical mechanics? Moving-train and creature-economy projects covered by PC Gamer offer looser matches, with availability and dates that require checking at the time you buy.

At a glance: the main alternatives

Game What moves? Relationship with the host World and pressure Best for
The Wandering Village A settlement rides on Onbu, a giant living creature. Explicit symbiosis; you can cooperate with or exploit Onbu, and its condition affects survival. Post-apocalyptic travel through toxic-spore biomes, with farming, foraging and compact production chains. Players whose non-negotiable feature is building on an animal.
Airborne Kingdom The entire city flies through the sky. No biological host; the challenge is infrastructure, lift, resources and mobility. Aerial exploration and connections with settlements on the ground. Players who want a travelling city without creature-care mechanics.
Airborne Empire A larger flying-city setting. No animal host; it expands the airborne-city formula with light role-playing elements. A broader world and more exploration-oriented progression than its predecessor. Players who prefer a mobile machine-city with additional adventure systems.
Before We Leave Settlements expand across a non-mobile, multi-region world. No host relationship. Gentle science-fiction city management from the developer’s earlier work. Players attracted to the calm, accessible design of Beyond These Stars rather than its whale premise.

The Wandering Village: the closest creature-based replacement

Why it is the strongest match

The Wandering Village asks you to build a human settlement on the back of Onbu, a gigantic wandering creature. Its official description is direct: “Build a village on the back of a giant creature.” The Steam listing likewise defines it as a city-building simulation on the back of a giant, wandering creature. No other recommendation here reproduces the central image of placing homes, farms and workshops on a living body.

The resemblance is mechanical as well as visual. Your available building area is limited by Onbu’s back, so expansion is a spatial puzzle rather than an invitation to spread indefinitely. Production chains must fit into that constrained footprint, and every new structure competes with farms, storage, roads and facilities needed to support the host. This creates the same kind of tension that makes a city on Kewa different from a conventional map-based builder.

How its survival loop differs from a space-whale journey

Onbu travels through a post-apocalyptic landscape affected by toxic spores. You farm and forage while preparing for dangerous biomes, balancing what the settlement needs now against what will keep it functioning during the next leg of the journey. The setting is terrestrial and survival-focused rather than interplanetary, so expect environmental hazards and resource pressure instead of alien diplomacy and planetary discovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The defining choice is your treatment of Onbu. You can work toward a symbiotic relationship, responding to its needs and encouraging cooperation, or exploit the creature for immediate gains. That ethical and logistical decision is more explicit than simply maintaining a vehicle: the host is a participant in the settlement’s survival, not an interchangeable platform.

Content, editions and current review signal

The game released on July 17, 2025. As of October 18, 2026, its Steam listing showed 92% positive English-language reviews from 4,031 reviews. Review totals and percentages change over time, so treat that figure as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent score.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if “city on a giant creature” is the feature that brought you to this search.
  • Choose it if you enjoy production layouts where every tile has to earn its place.
  • Choose it if a host’s health, consent and behaviour should influence your settlement plan.
  • Look elsewhere if you specifically want outer-space exploration, alien encounters or direct communication with a named sentient whale.

Airborne Kingdom: a mobile city built around infrastructure

What changes when the host is a machine?

Airborne Kingdom keeps the unusual city-builder premise but moves it into the sky. You design a city that flies, so mobility comes from engineered systems rather than a creature’s body. The key comparison is therefore infrastructure: lift, propulsion, resource use and connections to communities below replace the biological needs and consent decisions found in a creature-based game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This makes it a good answer for readers who typed “moving city builder” but do not require an animal. The city itself remains the object you plan and expand, and travel is part of the strategic identity rather than a decorative animation. You are solving how to keep a constructed settlement airborne and supplied while deciding where it should go next.

Where it diverges from Beyond These Stars

  • There is no sentient host whose health or trust you manage.
  • The setting is aerial rather than interstellar, so its exploration framework is not a substitute for visiting planets and meeting alien cultures.
  • Its pressures come from city infrastructure and mobility, not from maintaining a symbiotic biological relationship.

Pick Airborne Kingdom when the engineering problem of a travelling city sounds more appealing than creature care. It is also the cleaner recommendation for players who want the city to be the protagonist: every flight system exists to keep the urban machine moving, rather than to serve a living carrier.

Airborne Empire: the broader flying-city option

Why consider it instead of Airborne Kingdom?

Airborne Empire builds on the flying-city foundation with a larger world and light role-playing elements. The result is a better fit for players who want the mobile-settlement premise to lead into a wider adventure structure, rather than remaining focused on the core challenge of designing and sustaining one airborne city.

Its place in this list is still an analogy, not a direct mechanical match. The city flies through a constructed world; it does not walk, feed or communicate with an animal. If your priority is a sense of movement, discovery and a city that can relocate, the distinction may not matter. If your priority is the emotional and ethical relationship with Kewa, it matters a great deal.

Choose it when exploration needs to be bigger

Select Airborne Empire over the earlier flying-city option when a larger world and light RPG progression are more attractive than a tightly focused infrastructure sandbox. Select The Wandering Village instead when the host must be alive, vulnerable and central to every major decision.

Before We Leave: the same developer’s gentler sci-fi alternative

What it preserves

Balancing Monkey Games identifies Before We Leave as its earlier city-building game. It is the natural recommendation for someone drawn to the studio’s calm, approachable settlement design, readable systems and science-fiction framing.

What it deliberately does not preserve

Before We Leave is not a city on a whale or any other moving host. It does not replace Kewa’s sentience, the physical constraint of building on a creature’s back or the relationship mechanics that make Beyond These Stars distinctive. Its value is tonal and developmental: it lets you explore the same studio’s earlier take on friendly sci-fi city management without pretending that the premises are equivalent.

Choose it when your real requirement is “a relaxed science-fiction settlement builder.” Do not choose it as a one-to-one substitute for a creature-based colony simulation.

Looser matches: moving platforms and creature economies

PC Gamer’s 2026 city-builder coverage discusses additional concepts that approach the idea from different directions, including a settlement built on a moving train and a creature-collecting economy organized around a settlement. These projects can satisfy the desire for an unusual place to build or for creatures to shape progression, but they are not direct replacements for a city built on a sentient space whale.

Treat their release timing, platforms and availability as volatile. A project covered as upcoming can change scope, launch date or commercial status. They belong on a watchlist for players who value novelty over a proven match, not at the top of a shortlist for someone who specifically wants host health, symbiosis and a creature-sized building surface.

Decision guide: choose by the feature you cannot compromise on

If the host must be alive

Start with The Wandering Village. It is the only recommendation that puts the settlement on a giant living creature and makes cooperation or exploitation part of the strategy. Its toxic-spore world is different from the space setting, but the creature-based city relationship is structurally closest.

If mobility matters more than biology

Compare Airborne Kingdom and Airborne Empire. Both turn the city into a flying machine. Choose the former for the focused airborne-city challenge; choose the latter for a larger world and light RPG elements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If tone matters more than the hook

Choose Before We Leave. It comes from the same developer and offers the most relevant tonal connection, while accepting that the whale, planets and host relationship are absent.

If you want something experimental

Monitor the moving-train and creature-economy projects mentioned in 2026 coverage. They may offer a fresh interpretation of mobile or creature-centered settlement design, but confirm whether each has launched and what systems it actually contains before treating it as an alternative you can play now.

How the games compare on the core design axes

Host type

Beyond These Stars and The Wandering Village use sentient biological hosts. In the former, the host is Kewa, a universe-travelling space whale; in the latter, it is Onbu, a giant wandering creature. Airborne Kingdom and Airborne Empire use engineered flying cities, while Before We Leave has no moving host.

Relationship mechanics

Kewa’s communication and Onbu’s symbiotic relationship make the creature games relational: the carrier is part of the settlement’s social and survival problem. The airborne games replace that relationship with infrastructure management. Before We Leave focuses on settlement growth without either a host bond or a mobile platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

World structure

Beyond These Stars emphasizes space exploration, planets and alien encounters. The Wandering Village moves through toxic-spore biomes in a post-apocalyptic environment. The Airborne games explore from the sky, with the city itself travelling between locations. Before We Leave is the least tied to movement and the closest to a conventional regional city-building structure.

Tone and pressure

The creature-and-city premise can be cozy while still creating hard trade-offs. The Wandering Village adds harsher survival pressure through toxic environments and host care. The airborne games emphasize systems-heavy logistics and exploration. Before We Leave is the gentlest option for players who want approachable management rather than a demanding survival loop.

Common mistakes when picking a substitute

  • Confusing a moving map with a living host: A flying city can satisfy the mobility fantasy but cannot reproduce communication, consent or host health.
  • Assuming science fiction means space travel: Before We Leave shares the genre and developer but not the planetary and alien-exploration structure.
  • Ignoring footprint constraints: In The Wandering Village, the limited area on Onbu’s back is a central planning rule, not a cosmetic setting.
  • Treating review counts as permanent: The 92% positive figure for The Wandering Village was recorded from 4,031 English reviews on October 18, 2026; later reviews can change it.
  • Buying an edition without checking region: Physical copies, soundtrack bundles, artbooks and downloadable content can have different platform, stock and regional availability.

Bottom line

The Wandering Village is the clear first recommendation for anyone searching for a city builder on a giant creature. It reproduces the defining spatial and relational idea while changing the setting to a toxic-spore post-apocalypse. For a mobile city without biology, choose Airborne Kingdom or the larger, lightly role-playing Airborne Empire. For the same developer’s calmer science-fiction approach, choose Before We Leave. The moving-train and creature-economy concepts are worth watching, but they remain looser, availability-sensitive matches rather than replacements for the creature-host structure.
