The best alternative preserves the part you actually lost—matchmaking, a co-op routine, an asymmetric mode, a creator community, or a persistent progression loop—while running on the PlayStation or Xbox generation you own. Start by identifying exactly which service ended, then compare candidates on loop, player structure, cross-play, access model and the service’s current status.
The examples below are starting points rather than one-to-one substitutes. Platform listings and live-service schedules change, so the dated checks in this guide should be confirmed again when you are ready to download or buy.

What can I play instead of a game after its servers shut down?
First determine what stopped working. “The servers are shutting down” can describe several different events, and each calls for a different replacement strategy.

Matchmaking or multiplayer only
If matchmaking, invitations or peer sessions disappear, the campaign and local modes may still be useful. Look for a replacement with the same match structure—small-team competitive play, drop-in co-op or a persistent shared world—rather than merely the same genre label.

User-created content and sharing
Some games lose level browsers, upload tools or community hubs while their authored content remains playable. A replacement needs an active creation and discovery system if building and sharing were the reason you played. A conventional multiplayer game will not recreate that loop just because it has online matches.
Account, progression or entitlement services
When a publisher disables sign-in, inventories or cloud progression, an offline copy may launch but no longer retain the social or progression layer. Check whether a candidate stores progression locally, on a publisher account, or in a seasonal service before you invest time.
The entire online product
Some closures remove the game’s central activity. In that case, prioritize the activity pattern—extraction, racing, survival horror, cooperative adventure or competitive shooting—over a similar setting or franchise.
Shutdowns can be partial: check the exact notice
Official notices are title- and platform-specific. Sony’s notice for inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood says the PlayStation 3 user-generated-content servers are scheduled to end on August 31, 2026. It also states that “Offline features, including the main campaign, will remain playable.” That is a loss of creator-server functionality, not proof that every part of either game has stopped working.
The notice for Destruction AllStars describes service removal while saying Arcade Mode single-player challenges remain playable for returning players after the stated shutdown, with functionality possibly affected. If that is the game you own, download it and test the modes you care about before assuming you need a replacement.
EA’s service-update page lists Battlefield Hardline on PS4 and Xbox One for June 22, 2026, alongside older titles with different dates. A date for one console edition does not automatically close another edition, a backward-compatible build or a different platform. Record the exact title, edition, console generation and region named in the notice.
Could a publisher provide an offline version?
Sometimes a service is scheduled to change rather than disappear outright. Bandai Namco’s September 26, 2026 notice for SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada says its online PvPvE service will end and an offline-exclusive PvE extraction-shooter version is planned. The notice lists save-data transfer in December 2026 and a service transition after May 2027 as scheduled milestones. Those are plans, not completed events; treat the game as online-dependent until the publisher confirms each transition.

This distinction matters when choosing a substitute. If your preferred game is receiving an official offline mode, preserving your existing progression may be better than moving immediately to a different service. Save screenshots of settings and inventories, and follow the publisher’s transfer instructions when they are published.
Why a reissue or remaster may not restore the old multiplayer
A reissue can alter authentication, access controls, downloadable content and multiplayer infrastructure. A 2015 U.S. Copyright Office docket submission described reissued games with different access controls and multiplayer differences, including a reissued Battlefield 1942 version that later lost official multiplayer when GameSpy closed. This is historical context, not a rule that every remaster will fail; verify the current edition’s listed modes and servers instead of assuming the original online experience returned.
Platform and service check (snapshot dated October 13, 2026)
The following entries come from a cross-platform guide and Microsoft’s Xbox online-multiplayer listing available at that date. A listing establishes that a product was presented for those platforms; it is not a promise of future support or a guarantee that every mode is populated.

Write down the feature you valued before selecting a candidate. This prevents a familiar name or visual theme from hiding a poor mechanical fit.
1. Identify the activity loop
- Short competitive rounds: seek a game that returns you to a match quickly and offers a comparable team or solo structure.
- Social co-op: prioritize shared objectives, drop-in grouping and communication over raw player counts.
- Asymmetric pursuit: look for a deliberately unequal hunter-versus-survivor structure, not merely a horror setting.
- Persistent shooter or MMO-style routine: compare repeatable activities, builds, missions and progression cadence.
- Creation and discovery: verify that players can still publish, browse and play community-made content.
- Extraction: compare risk, loot, return conditions and whether the game is PvE, PvPvE or purely competitive.
2. Define the group you need
Note whether you played alone, with one friend, in a fixed squad or in a large community. A game can be technically multiplayer yet unsuitable if its minimum team size, communication demands or matchmaking rhythm differs from your old routine.
3. Check generation and cross-play
Keep PS4 and PS5 separate, and Xbox One separate from Xbox Series X|S. A game listed on PS5 may not run on PS4; an Xbox Series feature may not be present on Xbox One. Cross-platform availability also does not automatically mean cross-play is enabled in every mode. Confirm the current account-linking, input-pool and privacy settings.

4. Compare access and ongoing cost
Record whether the candidate is a purchase, free-to-play download, subscription entitlement or a combination of those models. Check required online-multiplayer subscriptions, paid expansions, battle passes and platform-specific editions at checkout. The model can change even when the game name remains the same.

5. Check the service’s present condition
Look for a recent publisher status page, an in-game notice and a current store listing. A game can be downloadable while a specific mode is disabled, delisted in one region or scheduled for retirement. Sony says prior purchases can still be downloaded for the foreseeable future subject to each game’s existing online features and service availability; downloading your copy does not prove that its online functions work.
Candidate alternatives by the experience you want to preserve
Sea of Thieves: social voyages and cooperative adventure
The cited cross-platform list identifies Sea of Thieves on PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S and describes it as an action-adventure game. It is a sensible starting point when the lost ingredient was a shared voyage: crewmates coordinating tasks, exploring together and creating stories through cooperation.
It is not a universal replacement. Its nautical setting, session structure and progression differ from a creator-focused game, a tight arena shooter or a horror chase. The listing includes an Amazon destination, indicating a purchase route was available when checked; confirm the current edition, price, account requirements and online-service status before buying. Confirm cross-play behavior in the current settings rather than inferring it solely from a cross-platform listing.
Rocket League: immediate arcade competition
Rocket League is listed for PS4/PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S as a sports game with cross-play. Choose it when the attraction was rapid rounds, readable objectives, mechanical mastery and a competitive rematch cycle. The vehicle-football rules make each match easy to understand while leaving room for a high skill ceiling.
It will not preserve a story campaign, creator marketplace, loot-extraction tension or a persistent shooter build. Players who relied on a large social world may also find its focused arenas comparatively narrow. Check which playlists, progression features and platform settings are currently active before treating it as a long-term substitute.
Dead by Daylight: asymmetric survival horror
The guide lists Dead by Daylight across PlayStation and Xbox generations and categorizes it as survival horror. It is the closest candidate in this set when the defining feature was an unequal chase: one side hunts while the other side completes objectives and tries to escape.

Its match goals, roles and progression are specific to asymmetric horror. It does not recreate a cooperative campaign, a creator-upload system or a conventional team shooter. Verify the current mode roster, cross-play implementation and edition requirements on your console, because a platform listing alone does not establish that every historical mode remains available.
Fortnite: cross-platform competitive shooting and evolving events
Fortnite appears in the cited cross-platform examples and Microsoft’s Xbox online-multiplayer listing. Consider it when the lost experience was a large competitive shooter community, frequent matchmaking and an event-driven service that changes over time.
Its building rules, seasonal structure and visual style may be a major departure from a tactical shooter, a military simulation or a small private co-op game. Treat “cross-platform” as a starting point: confirm whether your preferred playlist supports the consoles and input configuration you use, and review the current account and parental-control settings.
Apex Legends: squad-based battle royale
Apex Legends is cited as a cross-platform battle-royale/shooter example. It can fit players who want squad coordination, character abilities and a competitive survival format after another shooter’s matchmaking ends.
Battle-royale pacing, hero abilities and elimination stakes create a different routine from round-based arenas or cooperative missions. Evaluate squad size, communication expectations and the current ranked or unranked options before moving your whole group. Verify the current PlayStation and Xbox versions and service status at the time of installation.
Destiny 2: persistent shooter and MMO-style activity mix
Destiny 2 appears in both the cross-platform guide and Microsoft’s Xbox online-multiplayer listing. It is worth investigating when you valued a persistent shooter world, repeatable activities, equipment growth and a mixture of cooperative and competitive tasks rather than one isolated mode.

The breadth of a persistent service can also be its drawback: expansions, seasonal content, account linking and changing activity availability make it a poor drop-in replacement for a simple pick-up-and-play title. Check the current edition, required content, platform support and service notices before committing, and do not interpret its presence on a current listing as a longevity guarantee.

How to verify a candidate before spending money
- Open the exact store page for your console. Check whether the page says PS4, PS5, Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, and whether the edition is playable on your hardware.
- Read the publisher’s latest service notice. Look for maintenance, regional restrictions, mode removals and announced sunset dates.
- Confirm the multiplayer path. Determine whether online play requires a platform subscription, a publisher account, cross-play consent or a separate expansion.
- Test the social loop. If possible, download the free portion or use a trial to check party invites, matchmaking time, voice options and progression before buying add-ons.
- Check your group’s platform mix. A friend on PS4 may not share the same build or feature set as someone on PS5; do the same check for Xbox One and Series X|S.
- Save an exit plan. Keep local saves and screenshots, and know how to cancel recurring purchases or remove a game if the service does not fit.
Which games still have online multiplayer on PS5, PS4 or Xbox?
As of the October 13, 2026 listing snapshot, Sea of Thieves was presented for PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S; Rocket League for PS4/PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S; and Dead by Daylight across PlayStation and Xbox generations. Fortnite, Apex Legends and Destiny 2 were presented as cross-platform or Xbox online-multiplayer examples. These are dated availability signals, not guarantees that servers, playlists or editions will remain unchanged.
For a reliable answer on the day you play, check the console store page and the publisher’s service-status notice together. The store confirms that a build is offered; the service notice confirms whether the online function you need is operating.
What to do with the discontinued game you already own
- Launch it while signed in and test campaign, local multiplayer, downloaded content and any creator browser separately.
- Download owned content while the platform still offers it, but remember that download access does not restore disabled servers.
- Export screenshots, replays or creator files if the title provides an export function.
- Read the shutdown notice for refunds, transfer windows or replacement entitlements.
- Keep the original installed if its offline mode still matters; buying an alternative does not preserve that content.
Longevity: every live service carries risk
No current candidate can promise permanent availability. Microsoft’s multiplayer listing and a third-party cross-platform guide are snapshots, while official notices are the strongest evidence for a specific shutdown date. Avoid buying solely because a game is popular today. Prefer titles that provide a meaningful offline or local mode when that matters to you, and keep your expectations tied to the service terms and current notices.

Does a server shutdown always make the whole game unplayable?
No. The PlayStation notice for the inFAMOUS 2 and Festival of Blood UGC servers says offline features, including the main campaign, remain playable. Other titles may retain only selected modes, so test the exact features named in the shutdown notice.
Can I use a PS4 version with friends on PS5?
Only if the game and its service support that combination. Check the store page for each edition and confirm cross-generation and cross-play behavior in the current publisher documentation.
Is a cross-platform listing proof that cross-play works everywhere?
No. It shows that a guide or store listing presented the game on multiple platforms. Modes, account requirements and cross-play settings can differ, so verify them in the current game and platform notices.
