Best Alternatives to PlayStation Plus Premium for Subscription Gaming (2026)

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the closest broad replacement for PlayStation Plus Premium because it combines a large multi-publisher catalog, day-one releases, online console multiplayer and cloud gaming across Xbox, Windows PC and supported cloud devices. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the stronger value for Switch owners who want classic Nintendo games, while EA Play and Ubisoft+ make more sense when one publisher’s franchises are your priority.

Which subscription should replace PlayStation Plus Premium?

Your best choice depends on what you mean by “replace.” PlayStation Plus Premium is a PlayStation service with modern catalog games, classics, trials, cloud streaming and online multiplayer. None of the alternatives reproduces that exact mix on a PS5. Instead, each one solves a different problem:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • For the broadest library and day-one releases: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
  • For Switch owners and classic Nintendo software: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
  • For EA franchises and inexpensive access to a publisher catalog: EA Play.
  • For Ubisoft franchises and access to newer Ubisoft releases with additional content: Ubisoft+.

Subscription access is temporary in every case. A game can become unavailable when your membership ends or when the publisher removes it, so a subscription is different from buying a permanent license.

What PlayStation Plus Premium gives you to replace

Sony lists PlayStation Plus Premium in the US at $19.99 per month, $54.99 every three months or $159.99 per year. The tier combines several benefits that are split differently among competing services:

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate – 1 Month Membership – Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, Cloud Gaming Devices [Digital Code]
  • GAME PASS ULTIMATE: Play new games on day one, and enjoy hundreds of high-quality games on console, PC, and cloud. Game Pass Ultimate also includes online console multiplayer, EA Play, and other great member benefits.
  • SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: From fast-paced action and adventure to timeless classics, family-friendly games, innovative indie titles, brain-teasing puzzles, immersive roleplaying adventures, and intense shooters. Dive into a world where every gamer can find their next favorite game.
  • NEW GAMES ON DAY ONE: Enjoy incredible new games on day one from Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda Softworks, Activision Blizzard, and more. Play The Outer Worlds 2, NINJA GAIDEN 4, and High on Life 2 as soon as they are released.
  • ONLINE CONSOLE MULTIPLAYER: Tap into the heart of the Xbox community and join millions of players ready to play together. Online console multiplayer is included with Game Pass Ultimate.
  • EA PLAY MEMBERSHIP INCLUDED: Jump into Battlefield, STAR WARS, and other great game franchises with EA Play. Included at no extra cost, members get access to a collection of EA’s best-loved games, in-game rewards, and trials of select new games.
  • The Game Catalog provides a rotating selection of PlayStation games.
  • The Classics Catalog covers older PlayStation generations.
  • Game trials let members try selected titles for a limited period.
  • Cloud streaming is included, subject to territory, plan and time-based availability.
  • Ubisoft+ Classics, monthly games, online multiplayer, exclusive discounts, cloud storage and Share Play are also included.

Sony states that streaming needs at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures describe the connection floor, not a guarantee of smooth play: Wi-Fi congestion, latency and household traffic still affect the result. Sony also warns that catalog and streaming availability vary by territory, plan and time.

When comparing another service, decide which of these functions you actually use. A publisher subscription can be cheaper if you only play one series, while a broad service is more useful if you regularly move between genres and publishers.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: the closest broad replacement

What you get

Microsoft describes Xbox Game Pass Ultimate as including more than 500 games, day-one releases, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer and cloud gaming. That combination makes it the nearest alternative to Premium’s “one membership for many kinds of access” model, although it is built around Microsoft’s ecosystem rather than PlayStation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 500-plus figure is a catalog claim, not a promise that every title is available on every device. Microsoft says games, features and availability change over time and vary by region, plan and platform. Check the listing for your country and the device you intend to use before relying on a specific game.

Where it works

Ultimate spans Xbox consoles, Windows PC and supported cloud devices. Cloud play is the important distinction for people who do not own an Xbox: you may be able to play selected games through a supported device and connection, but the catalog, controls and performance depend on the title and the local service rollout. A PS5 is not an Xbox Game Pass device, so a PlayStation owner would need compatible hardware or cloud access rather than installing the service natively on the console.

Release timing and catalog turnover

Day-one releases are the strongest reason to choose Ultimate over a traditional back-catalog subscription. You can start eligible new releases when Microsoft adds them instead of waiting for a later catalog promotion. The trade-off is turnover: Microsoft states that games remain available only while your subscription is active and while each title remains in the library.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if you want one service across Xbox and PC, or you value the option of cloud play.
  • Choose it if day-one access matters more than maintaining a permanent collection.
  • Choose it if you would otherwise pay separately for EA Play, selected Ubisoft classics and online console multiplayer.
  • Do not choose it solely because of the 500-plus number if your preferred games are tied to another platform or region.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: the classic-game value option

What the Expansion Pack adds

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is a platform-specific membership rather than a general replacement for Premium. Nintendo lists online play, classic libraries for GameCube, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Genesis, plus selected upgrade packs and downloadable content. The games and extras are accessed through a Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo notes that availability can differ by region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

US pricing and household value

The US individual membership costs $49.99 for one year. A family membership costs $79.99 per year. The family option is the relevant comparison for a household with multiple Nintendo Accounts, provided the members meet Nintendo’s family-group requirements. These are annual prices; the published figures do not establish monthly or quarterly equivalents.

Rank #3
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate – 3 Month Membership – Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, Cloud Gaming Devices [Digital Code]

  • EA PLAY MEMBERSHIP INCLUDED: Jump into Battlefield, STAR WARS, and other great game franchises with EA Play. Included at no extra cost, members get access to a collection of EA’s best-loved games, in-game rewards, and trials of select new games.

How it compares with Premium

Expansion Pack is strongest for classic Nintendo software and selected DLC, not for a large rotating selection of modern third-party games. It also does not provide the same cloud-streaming proposition described for PlayStation Plus Premium. If your priority is playing older Nintendo titles on current hardware, its focused catalog can be better value than paying for a broader service you will not use. If you want new releases from many publishers, it is the wrong category of subscription.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if your primary console is a Switch and you want Nintendo’s classic libraries.
  • Choose it if online Switch play and included upgrade packs or DLC are valuable to your household.
  • Choose it if the $79.99 family membership covers several people who would otherwise buy separate memberships.

EA Play: a focused subscription for EA franchises

Included benefits

EA lists unlimited access to its Play List, trials of selected new games for up to 10 hours, monthly rewards and a 10% discount on EA digital purchases. The trial benefit is not full ownership: once the trial allowance is used, continued play depends on buying the game or having the appropriate ongoing access.

US pricing

EA Play costs $5.99 per month or $39.99 per year in the US. The annual option is cheaper than paying twelve monthly fees, but it is only good value if you expect to play EA titles throughout the year. Regional prices and platform storefront terms can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EA Play versus a broad service

EA Play is narrower than Premium or Game Pass Ultimate. Its advantage is concentration: if your rotation is dominated by EA sports, racing or action franchises, you are not paying for hundreds of unrelated games. Its 10% digital-purchase discount can also matter when you buy EA expansions or games outside the Play List. The limitation is obvious when your interests move beyond EA’s catalog; you may need a second membership for other publishers and for platform-wide features.

  • USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.

  • NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it when most of your planned playtime is in EA’s catalog.
  • Choose it when you want to test selected new EA releases for up to 10 hours before buying.
  • Choose it when the annual discount and 10% purchase saving outweigh the value of a broader library.

Ubisoft+: a publisher pass for Ubisoft-heavy players

What Ubisoft positions it for

Ubisoft’s store describes Ubisoft+ as a service centered on the company’s latest games and additional content. That makes it comparable to EA Play in scope: it is designed for people who want depth within one publisher’s catalog rather than a cross-publisher library.

Price and availability qualification

The accessible Ubisoft store information does not expose a current US price. Verify the live price, billing interval, supported platform and regional catalog at the point of purchase. Do not assume that an offer shown in one country or storefront applies to your account.

When it beats a general subscription

Ubisoft+ can make sense when you plan to play several Ubisoft releases or their extra content during the same membership period. If you only want one older game, buying it may be simpler than subscribing. If you need online console multiplayer or a broad selection outside Ubisoft, compare the total cost of the additional services you would still need.

Choosing by platform and play style

If you own only a PS5

None of the listed alternatives turns a PS5 into an Xbox, Switch or PC. EA Play and Ubisoft+ may have PlayStation availability for supported titles and plans, but the exact offer depends on the platform storefront. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is mainly useful to a PS5 owner who also has a Windows PC, Xbox or compatible cloud setup. Without that second access route, staying with the PlayStation catalog may be more practical.

If you want to play without buying a console

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is the clearest option in this set because Microsoft includes cloud gaming and supports selected cloud devices. Confirm that your country, device, controller and network are supported, and check that the games you want are cloud-enabled. PlayStation Plus Premium also offers cloud streaming where Sony makes it available, with a stated minimum of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p, but availability varies by territory and plan.

If classic games matter most

Choose Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for Nintendo’s listed GameCube, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Genesis libraries. PlayStation Plus Premium remains the relevant choice for its own Classics Catalog. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is not a substitute for Nintendo’s specific retro lineup; its value is the breadth of its current multi-publisher service and day-one releases.

If new releases matter most

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate has the clearest day-one positioning among the alternatives described here. EA Play provides trials of selected new EA games for up to 10 hours rather than universal day-one access. Ubisoft+ emphasizes the latest Ubisoft games and extra content, but the exact release and platform terms must be checked for each title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you share with family

Nintendo publishes a family price of $79.99 per year in the US. The other services in this comparison do not have a family price established in the supplied product facts. Check each service’s account, household and platform rules before assuming that one membership can be shared.

Streaming, downloads and ownership: the trade-offs

Cloud streaming

Streaming avoids a large download and can let you play on supported devices, but it depends on a stable, low-latency connection and the service’s regional rollout. Sony’s stated thresholds are 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Microsoft includes cloud gaming in Ultimate, while its documentation warns that availability varies by title, plan, platform and region. Treat those services as access to a changing library, not as a permanent cloud locker.

Downloading games

Downloading generally reduces the effect of moment-to-moment network conditions, but you still need an active subscription and periodic entitlement checks. A downloaded title can stop launching if the membership expires or the game leaves the catalog.

Buying a game

Purchase a title when you expect to keep playing after a subscription ends, when it is leaving a catalog, or when you want to play offline without membership-dependent access. EA Play’s 10% digital-purchase discount can reduce the cost of buying eligible EA content, but the discount does not convert a subscription entitlement into ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to switch without losing track of your games

  1. List the games you actually play. Separate titles you play weekly from games you only sampled because they were included.
  2. Mark each game’s platform. A subscription is useful only if the title is playable on your console, PC or supported cloud device.
  3. Check release and removal status. Catalogs change, and Microsoft and Sony both state that availability can vary over time.
  4. Compare the billing period you will use. For the published US figures, EA Play is $5.99 monthly or $39.99 annually, Nintendo Expansion Pack is $49.99 individual or $79.99 family annually, and PlayStation Plus Premium is $19.99 monthly, $54.99 every three months or $159.99 annually.
  5. Test streaming before committing. Use the supported device and controller you plan to keep using, rather than assuming that a service’s headline cloud feature works identically everywhere.
  6. Buy permanent favorites before canceling. If a game is leaving a catalog or you want uninterrupted future access, purchase it while any applicable discount is available.
  7. Turn off renewal after subscribing if you are testing. You retain access through the paid period while avoiding an automatic charge at the next renewal date, subject to the storefront’s cancellation terms.

Common mistakes when replacing Premium

  • Comparing catalog counts without checking platforms: a large library is irrelevant if your preferred device cannot run the games.
  • Treating trials as full games: EA’s advertised trials can last up to 10 hours for selected new releases, not indefinitely.
  • Assuming every catalog includes the same version: regional, platform and plan differences can change which edition or DLC is available.
  • Ignoring catalog turnover: subscription access ends when your plan expires or when a title is removed.
  • Assuming family sharing: Nintendo publishes a family tier, but the supplied facts do not establish equivalent family plans for the other services.
  • Using a headline streaming speed as a guarantee: Sony’s 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures are minimum connection requirements; latency and network stability still determine play quality.

Bottom line by reader type

  • Broad replacement across devices: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, provided you have an Xbox, Windows PC or supported cloud device and accept catalog turnover.
  • Lowest published annual cost for a classic-focused household: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack at $49.99 individual or $79.99 family in the US.
  • EA-focused player: EA Play at $5.99 monthly or $39.99 annually in the US, especially when trials, rewards and the purchase discount are useful.
  • Ubisoft-focused player: Ubisoft+, after checking the current regional price, platform support and included releases.
  • Player who wants to remain entirely on PlayStation: compare the games you use in Premium’s Game Catalog, Classics Catalog and trials before canceling, because the alternatives are not interchangeable on a PS5.
