Best Alternatives to Steam Remote Play for Streaming PC Games Remotely

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moonlight with Sunshine is the best Steam Remote Play alternative for most enthusiasts: it supports non-Steam games, gives you detailed host and client controls, and works across a broad device range. Parsec is the better choice when you need internet-based desktop access, collaboration, or a simple path to a game launched outside Steam. Steam Link remains the easiest option when your library is already in Steam and you want the least setup.

Your practical choice depends on five things: where the game is installed, whether you are streaming inside or outside your home, which GPU and operating system run the host PC, which client device you use, and how much network tuning you are willing to do.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

At a glance: which alternative fits your setup?

Option Best for Steam integration Outside-home use Host requirements Setup effort
Steam Link Steam libraries, TVs, phones and other supported clients Excellent; designed around Steam Possible when the host and client can connect through the internet PC running Steam; Valve recommends a wired network Lowest
Moonlight + Sunshine Non-Steam games, self-hosting and detailed control Good, but launcher-independent Possible; requires host-network configuration and sufficient upload bandwidth Modern AMD, NVIDIA or Intel GPU; supported Windows, macOS or Linux host Moderate to high
Parsec Remote desktop access, collaboration and games from any launcher Launcher-independent Its primary use case; quality depends on the full internet path AMD and NVIDIA GPU support is documented; current Parsec host software Low to moderate

Steam Link is technically part of Valve’s streaming ecosystem rather than a replacement for Steam Remote Play’s host technology. It is included because many people asking for an alternative really want a different client experience on a TV, phone or tablet. Moonlight and Parsec are the two genuinely independent choices covered here.

What to check before choosing a streaming app

Steam-only convenience or launcher independence

Steam Link is built to stream a Steam library. That gives it the shortest path from installing the client to launching a game, but games installed through another launcher may need to be added to Steam as non-Steam shortcuts and can lose some of that convenience. Moonlight with Sunshine and Parsec can launch a desktop, a game executable or a title from another launcher, so they are better when your collection is spread across multiple stores.

Host GPU and operating-system support

Moonlight does not encode the stream by itself; Sunshine runs on the gaming PC and performs the host-side capture and encoding. The Moonlight setup guide lists Sunshine support for modern AMD, NVIDIA and Intel GPUs on Windows 10 and 11, macOS 12 or later (experimental), and current Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora releases. Check the exact release notes for your distribution before installing, particularly on a headless Linux host.

Parsec documents support for AMD as well as NVIDIA graphics hardware. Steam Link requires a PC capable of running Steam and encoding the game, but the material available here does not specify a comparable GPU matrix. If you are choosing hardware specifically for streaming, verify encoder support and driver compatibility for the host operating system.

Client devices and controller input

Steam Link clients are documented for iPhone and iPad, Apple TV, Android, Fire TV, Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux, macOS and Meta Quest. Moonlight lists official clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Steam Link hardware, Android, Amazon Fire tablets and TVs, iOS, Apple TV and ChromeOS. Both document controller input, making them suitable for a phone, tablet or TV paired with a gamepad.

Parsec is designed for remote desktop sessions as well as games. Its exact client availability can change by platform and release, so confirm that your intended phone, tablet, TV or computer is supported before committing to it. The evidence here establishes Parsec’s internet streaming and GPU support, but not a complete current device list.

In-home streaming versus internet streaming

Inside your home, the main challenge is keeping the local network stable. Outside the home, your upload connection, the client’s download connection, routing between locations and latency all matter. Moonlight’s FAQ notes that real-time streaming cannot buffer data without adding significant latency. A brief congestion spike therefore appears as a stutter or dropped frame instead of being hidden by a long playback buffer.

Steam Link: the lowest-friction Steam option

Why choose it

Steam Link uses Valve’s real-time video and audio encoding with return input over a low-latency protocol. It is the natural choice when the games are already in Steam and you want to start playing on another screen without configuring a separate host application. Valve states that a wired network is strongly recommended.

The broad client list is its biggest practical advantage. A TV running Apple TV or Fire TV software, an Android handset, an iPhone or iPad, a Raspberry Pi, a desktop operating system or a Meta Quest headset can all act as the receiving device when the relevant Steam Link client is available.

Basic setup

  1. Install Steam on the gaming PC, sign in, and install the game you want to stream.
  2. Connect the gaming PC to your router with Ethernet if possible. Connect the client device by Ethernet as well, or use a clean 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  3. Install the Steam Link app on the supported client and sign in or pair it with the host PC when prompted.
  4. Run the connection test in Steam Link. Start with the default quality setting, then lower resolution or frame rate if the test reports instability.
  5. Pair a controller with the client device. Launch the game from the Steam Link interface and confirm that input reaches the host before changing advanced settings.

Limitations

  • Its strongest integration is with Steam. Non-Steam titles may require adding a shortcut to Steam and may not behave as cleanly as native Steam games.
  • Valve’s guidance emphasizes wired networking, so a congested wireless network can undermine an otherwise capable PC.
  • The evidence does not provide a universal bandwidth or latency threshold for Steam Link. Treat the quality test and your actual network conditions as more useful than a single advertised number.

Moonlight with Sunshine: the flexible self-hosted choice

How the two components work

Moonlight is the client. Sunshine is the host software that captures the game, encodes the video and sends it to Moonlight. Older instructions often refer to NVIDIA GeForce Experience as the host, but Moonlight’s FAQ says newer features require Sunshine because GeForce Experience is out of support. For a current installation, plan on Sunshine rather than building a new setup around the discontinued host path.

This separation gives you control over both ends. You can install a Moonlight client on a phone, computer, TV-oriented device or ChromeOS system while choosing a host operating system that fits your PC. It also makes Moonlight useful for games that do not live in Steam.

Supported host combinations

Host operating system GPU support listed for Sunshine Qualification
Windows 10 or 11 Modern AMD, NVIDIA and Intel GPUs Use current drivers and Sunshine releases compatible with your GPU encoder.
macOS 12 or later Sunshine host support listed Experimental according to the setup guide.
Current Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora releases Modern AMD, NVIDIA and Intel GPUs where the required encoder is available Distribution versions and driver packages must match Sunshine’s current requirements.

Moonlight and Sunshine setup

  1. Install Sunshine on the gaming PC using the package appropriate for Windows, macOS or your Linux distribution.
  2. Open Sunshine’s web-based configuration interface on the host and complete its initial account or pairing setup.
  3. Add the games or applications you want to launch. Include the launcher itself if you need to start a title that is not exposed as a direct executable.
  4. Install Moonlight on the client device. Official clients listed by the project include Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Steam Link hardware, Android, Amazon Fire tablets and TVs, iOS, Apple TV and ChromeOS.
  5. Make sure the client and host are on the same network for first pairing. Select the host in Moonlight, enter the PIN shown on the host, and approve the pairing in Sunshine.
  6. Start a game from Moonlight and verify controller mapping, audio output and resolution. Adjust Sunshine’s encoder and Moonlight’s streaming settings only after the basic connection works.
  7. For remote access from outside your home, configure a secure route to the host network and test it from a different connection, such as cellular data. Do not expose an administration interface directly to the public internet without understanding the security implications.

Bandwidth guidance and trade-offs

The Moonlight setup guide records 5 Mbps or higher upload for streaming outside the home in the documented GeForce Experience path. That figure is a documented minimum for that path, not a guarantee of smooth 1080p60 Sunshine streaming under every game and encoder setting. Higher resolution, higher frame rate, complex scenes and network overhead require more capacity.

Moonlight is the strongest fit when you value non-Steam support, broad client coverage and control over the host. The trade-off is hands-on maintenance: you are responsible for installing Sunshine, pairing clients, adding applications, keeping drivers current and solving router or firewall issues when playing remotely.

Parsec: internet-first remote access and desktop sharing

Where Parsec fits

Parsec streams game footage or an entire desktop session over the internet with low-latency remote access. It supports AMD as well as NVIDIA GPUs, so it is not limited to one graphics-vendor ecosystem. Because it presents a remote desktop rather than a Steam-specific library, it can handle games launched from different storefronts and is also useful when another person needs to view or control the host desktop.

Parsec’s published 1080p60 network targets

Connection element Minimum stated Recommended
Host upload 10 Mbps 30 Mbps for 1080p60
Client download 10 Mbps 30 Mbps for 1080p60
Client connection 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet Ethernet preferred where practical
Ping to a same-city test server Below 30 ms Below 15 ms

These are Parsec’s stated targets for 1080p60 guidance, not a promise that every game will look or feel identical at those figures. The ping measurement is to a same-city test server; a route to your actual gaming PC can be longer or less stable.

Practical setup

  1. Install the current Parsec host software on the gaming PC and sign in.
  2. Install Parsec on the client computer or device supported by the current release, then sign in with the account permitted to connect to the host.
  3. Connect the host to the router with Ethernet when possible. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi only when a cable is impractical and the signal is strong.
  4. Start with 1080p60 only if both connections meet the published targets. If you see dropped frames, reduce resolution or frame rate before increasing compression.
  5. Launch the game or desktop session through Parsec and test controller or keyboard input. For shared sessions, grant only the input permissions the other person needs.
  6. Stop large uploads, cloud backups and downloads while playing. Parsec specifically advises against background transfers, Wi-Fi boosters, Ethernet-over-powerline devices and mesh systems for its 1080p60 guidance.

Trade-offs

Parsec’s strength is convenience across the internet and its ability to expose a desktop, not just a Steam library. Its weakness is that the entire path between host and client affects responsiveness. A fast home connection cannot compensate for high round-trip latency, congested peering or an unstable Wi-Fi hop at the client.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Network requirements that apply to every option

Use Ethernet for the host first

The gaming PC sends the encoded video stream continuously. Connecting it to the router by Ethernet removes one of the most common sources of interference and variable latency. If only one device can be wired, make it the host PC; then give the client a strong 5 GHz connection or wire the client as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand upload and download directions

For in-home streaming, the host’s local upload path feeds the client. For outside-home streaming, the host’s internet upload is usually the limiting factor, while the remote client needs matching download capacity. Parsec’s 10 Mbps minimum and 30 Mbps recommended figures apply to both host upload and client download for its 1080p60 guidance. Moonlight’s documented 5 Mbps figure is tied to an older GeForce Experience outside-home path and should not be treated as a universal target for every Sunshine configuration.

Latency matters more than a speed-test headline

Bandwidth determines whether the stream can carry the selected image quality; latency and jitter determine how quickly input reaches the game and how consistently frames arrive. Parsec recommends ping below 30 ms, with below 15 ms preferred, to a same-city test server. A connection that briefly spikes far above its usual ping can feel worse than a slower but stable connection.

Remove avoidable congestion

  • Pause cloud synchronization, downloads and video uploads while streaming.
  • Avoid Wi-Fi repeaters or boosters that add another wireless hop unless testing proves they improve your specific layout.
  • Do not rely on Ethernet-over-powerline for a latency-sensitive setup without measuring it at the gaming times you care about.
  • Mesh Wi-Fi can work, but a client connected through a distant or busy mesh node may experience jitter. Use Ethernet backhaul or a direct 5 GHz access point when available.

Choosing by device and use case

Your situation Best starting point Reason
Steam library on a TV Steam Link Fastest setup and broad TV-oriented client support.
Games from several launchers Moonlight + Sunshine Add applications directly and keep control of the host.
Remote desktop plus occasional gaming Parsec Designed for desktop sessions and internet access as well as games.
Android, iPhone, Apple TV or ChromeOS client Steam Link or Moonlight Both projects document clients for these categories; choose based on Steam integration versus host control.
Linux gaming PC as host Moonlight + Sunshine Sunshine lists current Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora host support.
Lowest willingness to troubleshoot Steam Link Fewer moving parts when the game is already in Steam.

Troubleshooting common failures

The client cannot find the host

For first pairing, place both devices on the same home network, confirm that the host application is running, and check that the operating system firewall allows it. If local pairing works but remote access fails, the problem is likely routing, firewall policy or the absence of a secure path into the home network rather than the game itself.

Video stutters while audio continues

Check whether another device is saturating upload or download capacity. Wire the host, move the client to a clear 5 GHz channel, and lower resolution or frame rate. Real-time apps cannot hide congestion by buffering without adding noticeable delay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Input feels delayed

Measure latency between the actual host and client locations rather than relying on a nearby speed-test server. Remove wireless hops, stop background traffic and use a wired connection for the host. If the connection is stable but still too slow, reduce the distance between locations or use a nearer host; changing launchers will not fix a high round-trip time.

A non-Steam game will not launch

Steam Link may need a correctly configured non-Steam shortcut. With Sunshine, add the launcher or game executable in Sunshine’s application list. With Parsec, start the desktop session first and launch the game manually if an application shortcut does not behave correctly.

Moonlight features are missing

Verify that Sunshine is the host rather than an old GeForce Experience installation. Moonlight’s FAQ states that newer features require Sunshine because GeForce Experience is out of support.

Final recommendation

Choose Moonlight with Sunshine if you want the most capable independent system for non-Steam games and are comfortable configuring a host. Choose Parsec if remote desktop access, collaboration or internet-first use matters as much as gaming. Choose Steam Link when your library is already in Steam and you want the quickest route to a TV, phone, tablet or other supported client. Whichever you select, wire the gaming PC first and treat latency and stability as equally important as raw bandwidth.
