Short answer: The 8BitDo Micro is the closest pocket-first alternative to the CRKD Atom+: it is smaller, lighter and rated for longer play, but uses digital controls rather than analog sticks. Choose the 8BitDo Zero 2 for the lightest keychain-style pad, GameSir Pocket Taco for a phone-clamping handheld shape, or Razer Kishi V2 and Backbone One when your phone is the main screen and you want a conventional control layout.

What the CRKD Atom+ does, and what an alternative must match

The CRKD Atom+ is a standalone Bluetooth controller built around a full modern gamepad layout in a compact shell. CRKD lists 90 mm by 48 mm dimensions on its 2026 product page. It has two TMR thumbsticks, triggers, shoulder buttons, vibration, motion controls, programmable buttons and a rechargeable USB-C battery. Compatibility covers Switch 2, Switch, PC and PC handhelds, mobile devices, tablets and selected smart TVs.

That combination matters because many very small controllers save space by removing analog sticks, triggers or wireless features. A replacement can therefore be “smaller” while serving a different job. Before choosing, decide whether you need a complete controller for 3D games, a backup pad for short sessions, or a way to turn a phone into a handheld.

  • Full-layout requirement: Dual analog sticks, triggers and shoulder buttons are important for 3D action, racing, shooters and modern platformers.
  • Pocket requirement: Packed dimensions and weight matter more than a clamp or a large grip when the controller rides in a coat pocket, sling or travel case.
  • Phone requirement: A phone-mounted controller gives a handheld shape, but it adds handset and case-fit constraints that a standalone Bluetooth pad avoids.
  • Session requirement: A tiny controller for emergency play can prioritize size, while a primary controller for long sessions needs a layout your hands can use comfortably.

For context, the original CRKD ATOM is smaller still at 68 by 35 by 12 mm. CRKD rates it for eight to 10 hours of play and a two-hour charge, with support for Switch, PC/Mac, mobile and tablets, and selected smart TVs. Its existence shows the trade-off clearly: the more aggressively a controller shrinks, the more carefully you need to check the control layout.

The table makes the split straightforward. Micro and Zero 2 are the genuinely pocket-first substitutes. Pocket Taco is a compact phone handheld rather than a tiny standalone pad. Kishi V2 and Backbone One are larger phone-centered solutions whose usefulness depends on handset compatibility.

8BitDo Micro: the closest pure pocket substitute

8BitDo describes Micro as a “pocket-sized Bluetooth controller,” and its published dimensions and 24.8 g weight put it close to the Atom+ concept while making it an especially easy travel spare. Its 12-hour rating is longer than the Zero 2’s eight-hour rating and longer than the original ATOM’s eight-to-10-hour range. The one-to-two-hour charging estimate also makes overnight or airport charging practical.

Why Micro fits travel

  • It is small enough to keep in a pocket or organizer without the bulk of a phone clamp.
  • It supports Switch and Switch 2 directly, plus Android.
  • Keyboard mode extends its use to iPhone and iPad, Mac and Windows, which is useful when you want one tiny controller for several devices.
  • Its low weight makes it a sensible backup for multiplayer trips or hotel-room play.

The control compromise

Micro is not a shrunken version of a full dual-stick pad. 8BitDo positions it for 2D games, and the published feature list does not include analog sticks, vibration, motion sensing, NFC or console wake. That limits it to games designed around a directional pad and buttons. It is a strong match for retro libraries, platformers, puzzle games, menu navigation and turn-based titles, but not for a reader who expects the Atom+’s modern 3D controls.

Who should buy it

Choose Micro when pocket volume, low weight and broad small-device compatibility matter more than analog input. It is the best direct substitute for carrying a tiny controller every day, provided your game library is comfortable with digital controls.

8BitDo Zero 2: the lightest keychain-style option

Zero 2 weighs 20.7 g, making it lighter than Micro and one of the easiest controllers to leave attached to a keychain or travel pouch. Its 73 × 36.5 × 14.7 mm shell remains extremely compact, and its rechargeable battery is rated for eight hours.

Modes and compatibility

Zero 2 connects over Bluetooth to Switch, Windows and Android. Its X-input, D-input, Switch and keyboard modes let it serve different host devices, although the exact mode must match the platform you are using. The keyboard mode is particularly useful for simple games or remote interfaces that accept key presses instead of gamepad axes.

Where Zero 2 works best

  • Simple 2D games where a directional pad and face buttons are enough.
  • Short travel sessions where minimum carry weight is the priority.
  • A second controller for local multiplayer when the main controller is already packed.
  • Emergency input for a tablet, laptop or Android device.

Why it is not an Atom+ replacement for everyone

Zero 2 does not provide the dual analog sticks and triggers that define a modern full-size layout. It should therefore be treated as an ultralight companion rather than a universal replacement. If your priority is the smallest possible controller and your games are mostly retro or 2D, its lower weight is meaningful. If you need camera control, analog steering or variable trigger input, move up to a full-layout alternative or use the Atom+ itself.

GameSir Pocket Taco: the best phone-clamp format

Pocket Taco takes a different approach: instead of competing with a standalone pocket pad, it clamps around a phone and presents a vertical, Game Boy-like handheld layout. GameSir lists a 78 × 70.9 × 20.7 mm body, 62.2 g weight and a 600 mAh battery. Its wireless connection avoids choosing between a Lightning and USB-C plug, and the lack of a direct phone connector can make it easier to use with a case.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Advantages of the vertical handheld design

  • The phone becomes the screen and the controller supplies physical buttons around it.
  • A clamp keeps the controls and display together, which feels closer to a dedicated handheld than a loose Bluetooth pad.
  • Bluetooth operation works across Android, iOS, PC and Nintendo Switch according to the manufacturer’s compatibility claims.
  • The wireless design avoids connector selection and reduces the risk of a port mismatch when changing phones.

Trade-offs versus Atom+ and Micro

Pocket Taco is substantially wider and heavier than a pocket-first controller once the clamp is considered. It is designed to carry a phone, not disappear into a coin pocket. The vertical layout may also suit readers who prefer a retro handheld orientation, but it is a different ergonomic choice from the Atom+’s compact standalone gamepad. Battery endurance is not stated on the manufacturer’s product details, so do not assume the 600 mAh figure translates directly into a particular number of play hours.

Who should choose Pocket Taco

Choose it when your phone is the primary display and you want a self-contained handheld shape without a wired phone connector. It is less compelling if you already carry a Switch or want the smallest possible emergency controller.

Razer Kishi V2: a phone-first option for longer sessions

Kishi V2 is intended for direct phone play rather than pocketing as a tiny independent pad. Its conventional controller layout is a better fit for readers who want familiar sticks, buttons and triggers around a phone screen and are willing to carry a larger phone-mounted accessory.

Check Android compatibility before buying

The listed compatible Android examples include Samsung Galaxy S23 and Google Pixel 6, 7 and 8 families. Compatibility is handset-specific, so the model name alone is not enough: verify that your exact phone appears on the current compatibility list and that its physical dimensions and port position match the controller.

When Kishi V2 makes more sense than a pocket pad

  • You play for long sessions on a phone and want a conventional dual-stick layout.
  • You prefer the phone and controls to form one handheld unit.
  • You accept that the accessory is larger than Micro or Zero 2 in exchange for fuller controls.

Kishi V2 is not the answer to “What is the smallest standalone controller?” It is the answer to “How can I make a compatible phone feel more like a handheld?”

Backbone One: verify the complete handset-and-case setup

Backbone One is another phone-mounted alternative, but its portability depends on the exact phone and case combination. Backbone’s support documentation warns that case thickness and camera bumps can prevent a handset from fitting. A phone that fits without a case may fail once a protective shell is installed, and a camera island can interfere even when the phone’s overall dimensions appear suitable.

A practical fit check

  1. Identify the exact phone model, not just the family name.
  2. Measure or confirm the case thickness and inspect the camera-bump area.
  3. Check the controller’s current compatibility guidance for that phone and case setup.
  4. Only then decide whether a phone-mounted design is more useful than a standalone Bluetooth pad.

That extra verification makes Backbone One a poor impulse purchase for travel, but it can be the right choice when one specific phone is your permanent gaming screen.

Standalone Bluetooth versus phone-mounted: choose by travel scenario

Choose standalone Bluetooth for flexible packing

Micro, Zero 2 and the Atom+ can travel separately from the screen. They can pair with a Switch, tablet, phone, computer or another supported device without being physically attached to it. This is the most flexible format for readers who switch between devices during a trip or who want a backup controller that works even when a phone case changes.

Choose a phone-mounted controller for an all-in-one handheld

Pocket Taco, Kishi V2 and Backbone One keep the display and controls together. That reduces the need to prop up a phone and gives a more console-like grip, but it also means carrying a larger accessory and checking the handset fit. Pocket Taco uses Bluetooth and a clamp; Kishi V2 and Backbone One are centered on compatible phone hardware.

Use a two-controller strategy when needs conflict

A tiny digital pad can handle retro or menu-driven games while a full-layout controller handles modern titles. In that situation, Micro or Zero 2 can stay in a day bag as the lightweight backup, while the Atom+ or a phone-mounted controller handles games that require analog sticks and triggers. This avoids forcing one device to satisfy incompatible size and control requirements.

Travel packing and compatibility checklist

  • Confirm the platform: Switch 2 support is explicitly listed for Atom+ and Micro; Zero 2 lists Switch but not Switch 2 in the supplied specifications.
  • Separate analog from digital: Micro and Zero 2 are digital-control choices. Do not select them for games that require dual-stick camera movement or analog triggers.
  • Check the host mode: Zero 2 offers X-input, D-input, Switch and keyboard modes; Micro uses keyboard mode for its additional Apple, Mac and Windows support.
  • Plan charging: Micro’s one-to-two-hour charge and the original ATOM’s two-hour charge are published figures. Atom+’s charge time and Pocket Taco’s play time are not stated in the supplied product details.
  • Inspect the phone case: For Pocket Taco, Kishi V2 or Backbone One, confirm that the case and camera area do not interfere with the clamp or connector.
  • Match the controller to the session: Carry a light digital pad for short or simple sessions; carry a full-layout controller when the trip includes modern 3D games.

Final recommendation

For most readers asking for an alternative to the CRKD Atom+ that still feels genuinely pocketable, the 8BitDo Micro is the best starting point. It is compact, light and rated for 12 hours, and it works with Switch, Switch 2 and Android, but its digital-only design is a deliberate limitation. Pick the Zero 2 when every gram matters and your games are simple. Pick Pocket Taco when the phone itself should become a vertical handheld. Choose Kishi V2 or Backbone One only after confirming the exact phone and case fit. If analog sticks, triggers and modern-game controls are non-negotiable, the Atom+ remains the more complete standalone option.
