For most buyers, the best alternative to Lenovo’s Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS is the Valve Steam Deck OLED. It delivers the most coherent console-style SteamOS experience. Choose the ASUS ROG Ally X instead if you need Windows launchers, Xbox PC Game Pass, mods, or desktop software. Choose the MSI Claw 8 AI+ or Claw 8 EX AI+ when a premium large display and higher performance headroom matter more than price and software simplicity.
The right replacement depends less on a processor name than on operating-system friction, sustained performance at your preferred power limit, battery capacity, display characteristics, ergonomics, memory, storage, and the exact regional price. This guide compares those decisions with the Legion Go S SteamOS as the reference point.

At a glance: which alternative fits you?
| Handheld | Operating system focus | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valve Steam Deck OLED | SteamOS | Players who want the simplest, most console-like Steam library experience | Less flexible than Windows for non-Steam launchers, Game Pass and desktop applications |
| ASUS ROG Ally X | Windows | Players using several launchers, Xbox PC Game Pass, mods or desktop tools | Windows setup and maintenance add interface friction on a small touchscreen |
| MSI Claw 8 AI+ / Claw 8 EX AI+ | Windows | Players prioritising a large premium display and high performance | Higher price position; the premium is difficult to justify if you only play lighter Steam titles |
| Lenovo Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS | SteamOS (Windows versions also exist) | Players who want SteamOS with an 8-inch, 16:10, 120Hz screen | Heavier than a typical console controller and dependent on the exact memory, processor and storage SKU |
There is no universal winner. Steam Deck OLED is the safest recommendation for a Steam-first buyer, ROG Ally X is the most versatile Windows choice, and MSI’s Claw models are specialist options for display and performance enthusiasts.

Lenovo’s Legion Go S is sold with either SteamOS or Windows. The SteamOS reference configuration is built around an 8-inch WUXGA (1920×1200) 16:10 120Hz PureSight touch display. Lenovo lists Ryzen Z2 Go and Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor options, up to 32GB of 7500MHz LPDDR5X memory, and up to 1TB of PCIe Gen4 storage. The CES 2025 specification lists a 3-cell 55.5Wh battery and a weight of approximately 1.61lb (730g).

Those “up to” figures do not describe every retail unit. Lenovo’s PSREF identifies a SteamOS SKU with 16GB of soldered LPDDR5X-7500 memory, and the product was announced on 2025-05-28. Memory is not a later upgrade, so checking the exact model number before purchase is essential. A 16GB unit and a 32GB unit can behave very differently with modern games, browser tabs, launchers and background services.
Why it is a useful comparison baseline
- Screen: the 8-inch 16:10 panel gives more vertical space than a 16:9 display and supports a 120Hz refresh rate.
- Performance options: the Ryzen Z2 Go and Ryzen Z1 Extreme are different classes of configuration; do not infer performance from the Legion Go S name alone.
- Capacity: up to 32GB memory and 1TB storage are available, but lower-capacity and lower-memory SKUs exist.
- Portability: 730g is a substantial handheld weight, particularly during long sessions or when the device is held without a stand.
- Software choice: a SteamOS edition provides a console-like shell, while Windows editions trade simplicity for broader PC compatibility.
1. Valve Steam Deck OLED: the best SteamOS-first alternative
Steam Deck OLED is the natural choice when you want the SteamOS idea without buying Lenovo’s newer Legion Go S. Its strength is integration: the library, controller configuration, suspend-and-resume flow, updates and Steam Verified indicators are presented as one handheld interface rather than as a small Windows desktop.
Choose it when simplicity matters most
Steam Deck OLED suits a player who buys most games through Steam, wants to press the power button and start playing, and prefers clear compatibility guidance before downloading a title. SteamOS still exposes desktop tools for advanced users, but you can treat the device as a console for everyday play. That lowers the amount of launcher management and driver housekeeping required between sessions.

Understand the limits before buying
SteamOS is not a universal replacement for Windows. Non-Steam launchers can require additional configuration, and some multiplayer games with incompatible anti-cheat systems may not run. Xbox PC Game Pass is also designed around Windows, so a Game Pass-heavy library is a stronger reason to choose the ROG Ally X. Mods and desktop applications can work through Linux-compatible tools, but the process is less predictable than installing a Windows version.
Steam Deck OLED is therefore not the best choice because it wins every hardware specification. It is the best choice when the software flow is the feature you value every day. If your library is predominantly Steam and you rarely switch launchers, that consistency can matter more than a higher headline power limit.
Steam Deck OLED versus Legion Go S SteamOS
| Decision | Steam Deck OLED | Legion Go S SteamOS |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | SteamOS-first, mature Steam integration | SteamOS-first, newer Legion Go S hardware platform |
| Screen preference | Choose it if you prefer its OLED presentation and size | 8-inch 16:10 120Hz touch display |
| Memory and storage | Verify the current Deck OLED capacity before ordering | Up to 32GB LPDDR5X and up to 1TB PCIe Gen4; a listed SteamOS configuration has 16GB soldered memory |
| Game-source flexibility | Best for Steam; other sources may need Linux workarounds | Same SteamOS considerations on the SteamOS edition |
| Who should switch | Buy when SteamOS simplicity is the deciding factor | Buy when the larger 8-inch 16:10 screen or a specific Lenovo configuration is more important |
2. ASUS ROG Ally X: the best Windows-flexibility alternative
ROG Ally X is the stronger alternative for a mixed PC library. Windows gives direct access to multiple launchers, Xbox PC Game Pass, conventional mod managers, peripheral utilities and desktop applications. You can install software in the same way as on a laptop, then use the handheld’s control software to map buttons and adjust performance profiles.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Why Windows can be worth the friction
- Multiple launchers: keep Steam, Epic, GOG and publisher clients on one device without relying on compatibility layers for every game.
- Game Pass: install and run the Windows PC catalogue directly rather than treating it as an unsupported SteamOS workflow.
- Mods and tools: use the same Windows mod managers, overlays, save utilities and configuration tools that you use on a desktop PC.
- Desktop use: connect a keyboard, mouse and monitor for ordinary Windows applications.
The cost is interaction overhead. Windows notifications, updates, account prompts, scaling problems and launcher windows are designed for a larger display and a mouse. A handheld control centre can help, but it does not turn Windows into SteamOS. Expect to spend time configuring sleep behaviour, graphics drivers, per-game profiles and controller mappings.
Performance is more than the chip name
ROG Ally X belongs in the high-performance handheld conversation, but a processor label does not establish a permanent ranking. Compare devices at the same game resolution, frame-rate target, thermal profile and power limit. A handheld that briefly reaches a high frame rate may be less satisfying than one that holds a lower frame rate without aggressive fan noise or battery drain.
Memory capacity, cooling, firmware and the game’s engine all affect sustained results. Use a review that tests the games you play, or compare a returnable unit under your own settings. Do not treat a single benchmark from a different driver version as a universal result.
ROG Ally X versus Legion Go S SteamOS
| Question | ROG Ally X | Legion Go S SteamOS |
|---|---|---|
| Launcher access | Broad Windows compatibility, including Game Pass and desktop launchers | SteamOS edition is focused on Steam; Windows editions change this trade-off |
| Setup effort | More Windows maintenance and touchscreen navigation | SteamOS offers a more console-like flow |
| Screen | Check the current Ally X specification for size, panel type and refresh rate | 8-inch 16:10 120Hz touch display |
| Battery and weight | Verify the exact current SKU; comparable values are not stated here | 55.5Wh and approximately 730g in Lenovo’s CES specification |
| Best buyer | Someone whose library extends beyond Steam | Someone who values SteamOS and the Legion Go S display format |
3. MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 8 EX AI+: the premium display and performance route
MSI’s Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 8 EX AI+ are credible alternatives for buyers who place a large, premium-looking screen and performance headroom above a low entry price. Independent testing has reported a substantial performance uplift for the Claw 8 EX AI+, while also noting that it costs materially more than competing handhelds. That combination makes it a specialist recommendation rather than the default choice.
When the premium makes sense
- You play demanding games where additional performance headroom reduces the need for aggressive resolution scaling.
- You care about OLED-oriented display quality, contrast and a larger viewing area more than a compact footprint.
- You are comfortable paying more for a particular configuration instead of choosing the lowest-cost route into PC handheld gaming.
- You will use a wall charger, dock or power bank often enough that maximum battery endurance is not your only priority.
When to choose a cheaper alternative
If most of your library consists of indie games, older releases or well-optimised esports titles, the Claw’s extra performance may not change the experience enough to justify its price. Likewise, a premium display cannot compensate for a launcher workflow you dislike. Windows remains the underlying environment, so you still face the same update, scaling and account-management considerations as on other Windows handhelds.

SteamOS or Windows: make the operating-system decision first
| Need | SteamOS | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Fast, console-like launch into one library | Usually the smoother path | Possible, but launchers and updates add steps |
| Steam Verified guidance | Integrated into the Steam experience | Available inside Steam, alongside a separate Windows desktop |
| Xbox PC Game Pass | Not the straightforward option | Direct support for the Windows PC catalogue |
| Several PC launchers | May require compatibility tools or separate workarounds | Native launcher installations |
| Mods and desktop utilities | Depends on Linux compatibility and the specific tool | Broadest compatibility |
| Maintenance | More appliance-like for Steam games | More familiar to PC users, but more frequent desktop-style tasks |
A useful test is to list the ten games you are most likely to play on the device. Mark which require Game Pass, a non-Steam launcher, a Windows-only anti-cheat system or a particular mod manager. If several boxes are marked, Windows flexibility may outweigh SteamOS convenience. If none are marked and most games are Steam Verified or Playable, SteamOS is likely to feel better day to day.
Compare sustained performance, not marketing labels
Portable systems share a limited thermal and electrical budget. The same processor can produce different results depending on the selected wattage, cooling design, firmware, memory configuration, screen resolution and game settings. A fair comparison uses the same title, resolution, upscaling mode, frame-rate cap and power profile.
A practical comparison method
- Choose three games representative of your library: one demanding modern title, one older or well-optimised game and one game with a launcher or anti-cheat requirement.
- Set a consistent internal resolution and upscaling mode. Record whether the display is running at 60Hz or 120Hz.
- Test a low and a high power profile, allowing the handheld to reach a stable temperature before recording observations.
- Note frame-rate consistency, fan noise, surface temperature, input responsiveness and battery percentage after the same play period.
- Repeat after updating the operating system, graphics driver and game. Firmware changes can alter performance and battery behaviour.
The available evidence supports the Claw 8 EX AI+ as a strong performance contender, but it does not establish a universal ranking across every game and power limit. Treat “fastest handheld” claims as conditional unless the test method matches your use.
Battery life and portability: the figures that matter
Lenovo specifies a 55.5Wh battery and approximately 730g for the Legion Go S reference model. That gives you a concrete baseline, but battery life still depends on brightness, refresh rate, wireless radios, game load, frame-rate cap and power mode. A 120Hz panel can draw more power when the system is allowed to render at high frame rates; a 40Hz or 60Hz cap may extend a session in games that do not need high refresh.
Comparable battery and weight figures for the current Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally X and MSI Claw configurations are not stated in the available specifications used here. Verify the exact regional SKU before treating a retailer’s capacity or weight figure as a direct comparison. Do not infer endurance from watt-hours alone: firmware tuning and the game’s workload can outweigh a small capacity difference.
Portability checklist
- Weigh the complete setup, including a case, charger and any power bank you will carry.
- Check whether the device fits your preferred bag and whether its grips are comfortable when held above your lap.
- Consider the position of charging ports if you play while connected to a power bank or dock.
- Look for a built-in stand or plan for a case that can support the screen during table-top play.
- Confirm charger wattage and regional plug type before travel.
Display choices: size, aspect ratio, refresh and contrast
The Legion Go S uses an 8-inch 16:10 120Hz touch display. The 16:10 ratio provides additional vertical pixels for desktop interfaces and some games, while 120Hz can make menus and supported games feel smoother. It also increases the number of pixels the GPU may need to drive compared with a lower-resolution panel.

Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally X and MSI Claw models make different display trade-offs. The Claw 8 AI+ and EX AI+ are the choices to investigate if a larger premium or OLED-oriented presentation is your priority. Confirm brightness, resolution, refresh options, variable-refresh support, touch response and coating on the exact SKU; “OLED” or “120Hz” alone does not describe outdoor readability or battery impact.
Memory and storage: avoid buying the wrong SKU
Lenovo lists up to 32GB LPDDR5X memory and up to 1TB PCIe Gen4 storage for the Legion Go S, but the SteamOS PSREF entry identifies a 16GB LPDDR5X-7500 configuration with soldered memory. Soldered RAM cannot be replaced later. Sixteen gigabytes is workable for many games, yet background launchers, browsers, texture-heavy titles and future releases reduce headroom.
What to verify on every listing
- Exact processor: Ryzen Z2 Go and Ryzen Z1 Extreme are not interchangeable performance descriptions.
- Installed memory: record the capacity and speed, not just “LPDDR5X.”
- SSD capacity and interface: Lenovo lists PCIe Gen4 storage up to 1TB on the Legion Go S.
- Screen resolution and refresh: ensure the advertised panel matches the model number.
- Operating system: a Windows listing is not the same purchase as the SteamOS edition.
- Warranty and keyboard language: regional imports can have different support terms and layouts.
Storage fills quickly when modern games exceed 100GB. If you expect to keep several large installations, budget for a higher-capacity SSD or a compatible expansion card, and check whether replacing the internal drive affects warranty coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price and availability: compare the exact product, not the family name
Handheld prices and stock are regional and time-sensitive. Promotions, bundles, memory tiers and refurbished units can make two listings with the same family name poor comparisons. The Legion Go S has multiple processor, memory, storage and operating-system combinations; MSI’s Claw 8 line also includes distinct configurations.
Before ordering, record the full model number, included charger, warranty region, return window and delivery date. Recheck the retailer or manufacturer listing immediately before payment. A premium price can be sensible for a display or performance feature you will use every day, but not for a specification that your games never exploit.

Performance is lower than expected
Check whether the device is on battery-saving mode, running at the panel’s native resolution or using a high refresh rate. Compare the same game at a fixed frame-rate cap and power profile. Update firmware and drivers before concluding that the hardware is defective.
The handheld gets hot or loud
Move air vents away from fabric, remove dust from the intake, and avoid charging under a blanket. Lowering the power limit, frame-rate cap or resolution can reduce heat more effectively than changing a single quality setting. Persistent shutdowns, swelling or unusual odours require stopping use and contacting the manufacturer.
Storage fills unexpectedly
Review installed games, shader caches, launcher downloads and recorded clips. Uninstall unused titles, move compatible libraries to supported removable storage and keep a reserve of free SSD space for updates.
A multiplayer game refuses to run
Check the game’s current anti-cheat and operating-system requirements. A title that works on Windows may not work on SteamOS, and a compatibility status can change after an update. Do not assume that a successful single-player launch proves online functionality.
Final buying check
Choose the operating system first, then compare sustained performance at the power limit you will actually use. Confirm the screen, exact processor, soldered memory capacity, storage, battery specification, weight, charger, warranty region and current price for the specific SKU. Steam Deck OLED is the dependable SteamOS alternative; ROG Ally X is the practical Windows alternative; MSI Claw 8 AI+ and EX AI+ are premium display-and-performance options. That decision framework will remain useful even as individual handheld models and retail prices change.
