OpenCE is the closest technical alternative to Warthog ChupathingyCE because it follows the Halo: Combat Evolved decompilation lineage. If you want to run the original Xbox software on a computer, use xemu. If your priority is a supported installation on an Xbox Series X|S, choose Halo: Campaign Evolved, a rebuilt commercial campaign rather than a Warthog-style port.
Quick answer: which alternative fits your goal?
There is no single drop-in replacement for Warthog ChupathingyCE on Xbox because the three practical alternatives use different execution models. Warthog is the console build line for ChupathingyCE, a native community port of the Halo: Combat Evolved decompilation. OpenCE is another decompilation port. xemu emulates the original Xbox software instead of recompiling it as a native application. Halo: Campaign Evolved is a supported commercial rebuild of the campaign for Xbox Series X|S.

| Option | What it is | Where it runs | Multiplayer or play features | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenCE | Community Halo CE decompilation port | Windows, Linux, Android and web; console deployment is not established by the project information | System-link and internet play documented by the project | Readers who want the closest technical cousin to Warthog |
| xemu | Original Xbox emulator | Computer-based use on supported desktop operating systems, including Windows, macOS and Linux | Emulator networking, subject to configuration and compatibility | Readers who want the original Xbox software path outside a native port |
| Halo: Campaign Evolved | Commercially rebuilt Halo CE campaign | Xbox Series X|S; digital and physical editions are listed by Xbox | Two-player console split-screen and four-player online co-op | Readers who want supported modern Xbox installation and presentation |
For an Xbox Series console specifically, Campaign Evolved is the clearly supported choice in this list. OpenCE should be treated as a community project whose console availability must be verified separately, while xemu is an emulation route for a computer rather than a native Xbox Series replacement.
What Warthog ChupathingyCE is—and why the distinction matters
ChupathingyCE describes itself as a free, open-source port of the Halo: Combat Evolved decompilation to modern computers and phones. The project README also states that its code is built for consoles by Warthog. In other words, “Warthog” refers to the console build line associated with ChupathingyCE, not to a separate commercial edition of Halo.

That architecture determines what an alternative can realistically provide. A native decompilation port recompiles recovered game code for a new operating system or hardware target. An emulator keeps the original Xbox program model and supplies a software version of the console hardware around it. A commercial rebuild can change rendering, input, networking and campaign systems while retaining the original game’s identity. These approaches can all play Halo CE, but they do not offer identical compatibility, file requirements, multiplayer behavior or support.
ChupathingyCE also does not distribute Microsoft’s game content. It does not include Halo maps, sounds or art. On first start, it copies the maps from an Xbox disc image supplied by the user. The project describes itself as a fan project and does not grant rights to Microsoft’s Halo content. That ownership model is important when evaluating OpenCE and xemu as well: a decompilation port or emulator does not automatically supply the copyrighted game files.
OpenCE: the closest like-for-like alternative
Why OpenCE is the nearest match
OpenCE is the most natural alternative when your goal is to stay within the same technical family as Warthog. Its official repository presents it as a Halo CE decompilation port rather than an emulator or a new commercial remake. That means it aims to preserve the original game’s behavior while producing builds for modern environments.
The project lists Windows, Linux, Android and web targets. It also documents Xbox disc-image input and supports system-link and internet multiplayer. Those details make OpenCE a stronger comparison to ChupathingyCE than xemu, whose defining feature is emulation, or Campaign Evolved, which is a rebuilt commercial product.
What OpenCE can and cannot answer for an Xbox buyer
OpenCE’s published target list does not establish an official Xbox Series X|S retail distribution. Do not assume that a Windows, Linux, Android or web build can be installed on a current Xbox console. Console deployment may depend on a separate community build, development environment, hardware access and permissions that are not described by the project’s general repository information.

If “Xbox” means “I want the Warthog-style decompilation experience,” OpenCE is the option to investigate first. If it means “I want a supported download from the Xbox ecosystem on a Series console,” OpenCE does not provide that assurance; Campaign Evolved does.
OpenCE setup path
- Confirm the target. Choose a listed OpenCE build for Windows, Linux, Android or web. Treat any claimed Xbox-console build as a separate deployment and verify its current status before preparing hardware.
- Prepare your own Xbox game image. OpenCE documents supplying an Xbox disc image. Use a game image you are legally entitled to use; the project does not turn copyrighted Halo assets into freely redistributable files.
- Install the build for your platform. Follow the release’s platform-specific instructions and keep the build version with the files you downloaded. A desktop build and a web build may have different controller, storage and networking behavior.
- Point OpenCE at the image when prompted. The game content is read from the supplied image rather than downloaded from the project. If the application cannot find the image, check the path, file permissions and whether the dump is a complete Xbox disc image.
- Configure input and display. Map a controller, choose a resolution and test a local campaign session before attempting network play. This isolates content or controller problems from multiplayer configuration.
- Set up system-link or internet play. Use the multiplayer method documented for your build. Players should run compatible versions and agree on the same networking method; a system-link session and an internet session are not interchangeable.
Because the available platforms and deployment model can change with community releases, check the specific OpenCE release notes before treating it as an Xbox-console installation. The stable conclusion from the project’s published information is that it is a close decompilation alternative, not an established Xbox Series retail product.

xemu: the best original-Xbox emulation route
How xemu differs from Warthog and OpenCE
xemu emulates the original Xbox. It does not recompile the Halo CE code into a native Xbox Series or desktop port. Instead, it recreates enough of the original console environment for the Xbox software to run. This can preserve original timing, menus and software behavior more directly than a decompilation port, but it also means performance and compatibility depend on the emulator and the host computer.
The official Halo CE compatibility record rates the game Playable with minor issues. That record lists xemu version 0.8.96 and a last test date of August 29, 2025. “Playable” is not the same as perfect: expect that minor glitches or configuration differences may remain, and do not interpret the rating as a guarantee for every computer or every emulator revision.
Where xemu runs
xemu is a computer route, including Windows, macOS and Linux use. It is not a native Xbox Series X|S homebrew replacement. If your requirement is to stay on an Xbox console without a computer, xemu does not meet that requirement.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
xemu setup path
- Install a current xemu release for your computer. Use the emulator’s official distribution for your operating system and check the compatibility record against the version you intend to run.
- Supply legally owned Xbox game files. An emulator supplies hardware behavior, not Microsoft’s copyrighted game content. Prepare a disc image or other files you are entitled to use under the laws that apply to you.
- Configure the virtual Xbox environment. Set the system paths, controller and display options requested by xemu. Keep the first test at conservative graphics settings so that a launch problem is easier to diagnose.
- Start Halo CE and test the campaign. Verify that the game reaches its menus and loads a level before changing advanced graphics or networking options.
- Configure multiplayer only after local play works. Emulator networking can require matching settings and compatible host configurations. Test one connection at a time rather than changing several network options together.
When xemu is the right compromise
Choose xemu when authenticity to the original Xbox software path matters more than having a native port. It is also useful when you want to play on a computer without relying on an unfinished console deployment. Choose OpenCE instead when you specifically want a decompilation project with documented modern builds and system-link or internet play.

Halo: Campaign Evolved: the supported Xbox Series choice
What you get
Xbox describes Halo: Campaign Evolved as a rebuilt version of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign that also expands on it. The official product information lists Xbox Series X|S availability, a digital edition and a physical edition through select retailers. It launched on July 28, 2026.
The package supports two-player console split-screen and four-player online co-op. Those options make it the strongest recommendation for a reader whose priority is playing with others on a current Xbox console without assembling a community port or emulator setup.
What it is not
Campaign Evolved is not Warthog, ChupathingyCE or OpenCE. It is not a native decompilation build and it does not use xemu’s emulation model. It is a commercial rebuild with modern presentation and an officially supported Xbox installation path. Expect its campaign systems, visuals and networking decisions to reflect the rebuilt product rather than a promise of byte-for-byte behavior from the original Xbox release.
Installation and multiplayer path
- Choose digital or physical purchase. Xbox lists both formats, with physical availability through select retailers.
- Install on an Xbox Series X|S. Use the console’s normal game-install process and allow the title to finish updating before inviting other players.
- Use split-screen for two local players. Connect and sign in the required controllers, then select the campaign’s local co-op option.
- Use online co-op for up to four players. Invite the other players through the Xbox multiplayer flow and ensure each participant has access to the required online service and game entitlement.
This route avoids disc-image extraction and community-build compatibility questions, but it also answers a different question from “Which port is closest to Warthog?” It is the best supported modern Xbox purchase, not the closest decompilation.

Comparison by the decision that matters
If you want the same decompilation lineage
Pick OpenCE. It is the only option here that is explicitly another Halo CE decompilation port. Its published builds cover desktop, Android and web environments, and its documentation includes system-link and internet multiplayer. Verify any Xbox-console deployment independently because an official Series X|S distribution is not established.
If you want the original Xbox software path
Pick xemu. The emulator keeps the original Xbox program model instead of relying on a native decompilation build. Its Halo CE status is “Playable” with minor issues in the compatibility record for xemu 0.8.96, tested August 29, 2025.
If you want the least-friction current Xbox installation
Pick Halo: Campaign Evolved. It is listed for Xbox Series X|S, has digital and physical editions, and includes two-player split-screen plus four-player online co-op. No disc-image preparation or homebrew deployment is part of the normal retail path.
If you want to play on a computer but avoid a rebuild
Compare OpenCE and xemu based on what you value. OpenCE is a native decompilation port with modern platform targets; xemu is emulation with an official compatibility rating. Neither should be described as a native Xbox Series replacement.
Ownership, disc images and safe setup expectations
ChupathingyCE’s file policy is explicit: the project does not include Halo’s maps, sounds or art, and it requires the user’s own Xbox disc image. On first launch, it copies maps from that image. The same principle should guide an OpenCE or xemu setup. Obtain and use game files you are legally entitled to use, and do not expect a project repository or emulator installer to provide Microsoft’s copyrighted assets.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Port code is not the game content. Open-source code can be distributed separately from maps, sound effects, textures and other copyrighted assets.
- An emulator is not a license. xemu recreates console hardware behavior; it does not authorize downloading a game image from an unapproved source.
- A retail rebuild has its own entitlement. Campaign Evolved uses the supported Xbox purchase and installation model rather than the disc-image workflow used by community ports.
- Keep backups of your configuration. Record the build version, image path and controller settings before changing them. This makes it easier to return to a known-good setup after an update.
Multiplayer: similar words, different experiences
| Option | Documented multiplayer model | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| OpenCE | System-link and internet play | Community-hosted behavior; compatible builds and network settings are important |
| xemu | Emulator networking | Depends on xemu configuration, host systems and the compatibility of the emulated session |
| Halo: Campaign Evolved | Two-player console split-screen and four-player online co-op | Officially supported features on Xbox Series X|S |
Do not treat “online multiplayer” as a universal feature with the same backend. OpenCE’s internet play is a community-project feature, xemu’s multiplayer depends on emulation networking, and Campaign Evolved’s co-op belongs to the commercial Xbox release. The number of players and the way a session is created therefore differ even when all three options let people play together.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The project launches but cannot find the game
Check that you supplied a complete, legally owned Xbox disc image and that the application has permission to read its location. For ChupathingyCE and OpenCE, remember that the port code does not contain the Halo maps and other assets. For xemu, verify the virtual-drive or image configuration instead of copying files into an arbitrary project folder.
You expected an Xbox Series installation but only found a desktop build
That is the expected distinction between the options. OpenCE’s listed targets are Windows, Linux, Android and web, and its published information does not establish an official Xbox Series retail package. xemu is a computer emulator. Use Campaign Evolved when the requirement is a supported Series X|S installation.
Halo CE runs, but multiplayer does not
First test a local campaign session. Then confirm that every OpenCE participant uses a compatible build and the same system-link or internet method. For xemu, isolate emulator networking settings and host connectivity before changing graphics options. For Campaign Evolved, use the console’s normal split-screen or online co-op flow and confirm that each player is signed in and entitled to play.
The emulator shows minor glitches
The official compatibility record’s “Playable” rating for Halo CE on xemu 0.8.96 already qualifies the result with minor issues. Compare your behavior with that record, test the current supported release and avoid assuming that a different computer will produce identical results. If absolute Xbox Series support matters more than emulation fidelity, Campaign Evolved is the more appropriate route.
Final recommendation
Use OpenCE when “alternative to Warthog” means another community Halo CE decompilation port. Use xemu when you want the original Xbox software path on a computer and can accept an emulator’s compatibility limits. Use Halo: Campaign Evolved when you want a supported Xbox Series X|S product, modern presentation and clearly documented split-screen and online co-op.
The key decision is not a small feature difference; it is the execution model. OpenCE and Warthog belong to the decompilation-port family, xemu emulates an original Xbox, and Campaign Evolved is a rebuilt commercial campaign. Choosing by that distinction prevents the most common mismatch: expecting a retail Xbox Series installation from a community port, or expecting a commercial remake to behave exactly like a native decompilation.
