Best Amazon EC2 Instance Type for 24/7 YouTube Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universally best EC2 instance for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The right choice depends on what you are streaming, the output resolution and frame rate, codec, encoder software, and whether that encoder can use hardware acceleration. For sustained CPU encoding, start by evaluating fixed-performance compute rather than assuming a burstable T instance will maintain full-CPU performance indefinitely. Then benchmark your actual stream in the AWS Region and configuration you intend to use.

Choose the instance around the encoding workload

An EC2 instance does not make a stream efficient simply because it is large or has a GPU. It must run your encoder continuously, produce the selected video format in real time, and send the result to YouTube reliably. AWS identifies fixed-performance instances as a fit for sustained high CPU demand, including video encoding, and describes its compute-optimized family as suitable for compute-intensive work such as media transcoding. Those are sensible families to test, not a guarantee that a particular size will handle your workload.

When fixed-performance CPU compute is the starting point

If your encoder runs on the CPU and must encode continuously, evaluate fixed-performance instances first. AWS cautions that burstable T-family performance is governed by CPU credits and recommends fixed-performance instances for consistently high CPU performance. A T instance may appear adequate during a short test while still being a poor assumption for sustained, full-CPU encoding.

When compute-optimized instances are worth testing

Compute-optimized instances are a relevant comparison when the encoder is CPU-bound or you are transcoding media. Test more than one size with the actual encoding settings: the family name alone does not establish real-time capacity for a particular codec, frame rate, or source.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When a GPU might help

Consider an accelerated instance only if your specific encoder and codec can use a supported GPU encoding path and the workload benefits from it. GPU availability by itself does not establish that a YouTube livestream will encode faster or more economically. Compare the resulting stream quality and stability as well as instance cost.

Set YouTube ingest requirements before benchmarking

Pick the intended codec and output format before sizing EC2. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP.

H.264 bitrate guidance from YouTube

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps, H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps, H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps, H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of EC2 encoding capacity. YouTube lists different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265, so do not carry the H.264 figures over to those codecs. Check the current YouTube guidance for the exact codec and resolution you choose.

Test representative content, not a static screen

Benchmark with representative audio and motion. Gameplay, animated scenes, and rapidly changing footage can impose different encoding demands from a static title card. Monitor YouTube stream health and encoder output during the test, including dropped frames and whether the encoder can sustain the selected output without falling behind.

A practical EC2 selection and test procedure

  1. Define the stream. Record the source, resolution, frame rate, codec, audio settings, and encoder application. Decide whether the machine will encode a live game capture, a camera feed, or prerecorded video; these are different workloads.
  2. Check the encoder path. Determine whether the application is CPU-only or can use a supported GPU encoder for the selected codec. Confirm the operating system, encoder version, and instance compatibility you need.
  3. Choose a baseline family. For sustained CPU encoding, begin with fixed-performance compute. Compare compute-optimized options where the workload calls for it, and accelerated instances only when the encoder can use their hardware.
  4. Run a representative stream test. Use the real content and intended YouTube output settings. Allow enough time to observe sustained behavior rather than relying only on a brief launch test. Check CPU or GPU utilization, encoder lag, dropped frames, network behavior, and YouTube stream health.
  5. Compare sizes in the intended Region. Repeat the test with candidate instance sizes in the AWS Region where you plan to run. Instance inventory, availability, and prices vary; verify the current options rather than assuming a family or size is offered everywhere.
  6. Estimate the full bill. Price the selected Region, instance size, operating system, storage, data transfer, and pricing model separately. Include the hours needed for continuous operation and any other services in your design. The exact monthly cost cannot be determined without those choices.

Why a single 24/7 AWS price cannot be given here

A monthly EC2 estimate would be misleading without the Region, source, operating system, encoder, codec, output resolution and frame rate, and pricing model. Those variables determine both the machine required and the bill. AWS’s managed Live Streaming on AWS solution gives an example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event with approximately 1,000 viewers and SD-540p output in US East (N. Virginia): $2.50 for live encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for 791 GB of distribution. That is a configuration-specific, multi-service event example, not an EC2 encoder price or a 24/7 estimate. Distribution costs can be substantial and should not be mistaken for compute cost.

Common sizing and streaming problems

  • The test works, then performance degrades: a burstable instance may be constrained by CPU credits under sustained load. Re-test on fixed-performance compute for a continuous CPU-heavy encoder.
  • The encoder cannot keep up: first check whether the workload is CPU- or GPU-bound and whether the selected encoder is using the intended hardware path. Benchmark a larger or more suitable instance with the same representative content before changing multiple settings at once.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: verify the chosen codec’s bitrate guidance, use CBR, check the two-second keyframe target, and inspect encoder and network behavior. Test with representative movement and audio.
  • A GPU instance does not improve encoding: confirm that the application supports and is configured to use the GPU encoder for that codec. A GPU is not automatically used by every encoder or workload.
  • The price differs from an EC2-only estimate: separate compute from storage, data transfer, and any packaging or distribution services. A managed streaming example with viewers includes costs that do not describe a standalone EC2 encoder.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel rather than operate and tune an encoder on EC2, StreamNeo is a simpler cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from its cloud service, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Its one flat price per slot applies to any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not live camera capture.
